Japan: Nintendo Temporarily Halts Famicom Mini Production

Yesterday we found out that Nintendo is discontinuing the popular NES Classic Edition in North America. The news wasn’t taken well by fans of the company as the system has been extremely hard to find since it launched. Nintendo Japan also announced today that they will be temporarily halting production of the console despite it being a huge hit. If they decide to restart production they will inform customers on their official website.

  1. P1. NoA needs to take some pointers from NoJ. If you have an insanely popular item, you don’t just cancel production flat out with no possibilty of a reboot. You tell consumers that you’re stopping for now, but could possibly continue in the future.

    On the plus side, I’m glad to know that the PR yesterday came from NoA, and not directly from Japan. I figured Kimishima was a good enough businessman to not just flat out say that there’ll be no more NES Classics forever.

    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

      I wonder who’s bright idea at NoA was it. I’m leaning towards that putz Reggie…

      1. Well it may very well be that this was a company wide decision, since famicom mini production is also ending, but Japan handled the situation so much better than NoA

        1. I think the guy in the other thread had a pretty good point about the pirate kits being released for hackers. It’s one thing for people to scalp this thing but when people are hacking and putting every single nes game on it and THEN scalping it I can see how Nintendo might be freaking out a bit.

        2. on the other hand I can see Nintendo maybe just wanting to release this every holiday season of the year, kind of a guaranteed cash grab every year when they need it most

          1. That’s a good point. It would potentially be a brilliant business move if Nintendo decided to produce NES classics (or other classic systems) only once a year, every year around the holidays. That way, they could ensure that demand remains high due to the consoles only being released once a year and in limited quantities; and they would pretty much always be guarenteed a profitable holiday season. The only problem would be consumer interest. Would potential consumers remain interested in the product if they have to wait a whole year to get one?

            It really was intended to be limited, but I’d say the whole piracy thing was probably what led them to the decision to not continue production in spite of mass success.

  2. It’s like Nintendo is trying to encourage scalpers.
    Even though there may be more later, saying it’s discontinued indefinitely is still enough to raise it’s collector’s value substantially.

    Of course NoJ would temporarily halt it. Meanwhile, a certain puppet who’s body is ready to fuck over Nintendo fans at any given moment decided the NES Mini should be discontinued all together with the “but it was only ever supposed to be limited!” bullshit. When something is popular, I don’t give a damn if it was originally meant to be limited or not. You fucking make more so you can make more money when there is obvious demand from consumers!

  6. Well it’s really clear for me what this was . It’s called marketing scheme trying to pull in old fan base sell out a 60.00 dollar device and have no other choice but a 3ds 200.00 or switch 300.00 customers will bite remember that we are the video game enthusiast group of people we collect all things Nintendo etc.
