Nintendo Switch, the new home gaming system that people can also take on the go, has sold faster in its launch month than any other video game system in Nintendo history. The Nintendo Switch system sold more than 906,000 units in March, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. That makes Nintendo Switch one of the fastest-selling video game systems of all time. Notably, this sales surge was accomplished in a nontraditional month for a console launch.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game sold over 1.3 million units*. That total includes more than 925,000 units sold for Nintendo Switch and nearly 460,000 units sold for the Wii U console. That means that Nintendo sold more of this game for Nintendo Switch than it sold Nintendo Switch systems, for an attach rate of more than 100 percent. This may be attributed to people who purchased both a limited edition of the game to collect and a second version to play.
This was all enough to make The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild the fastest-selling Nintendo launch game of all time, as well as the fastest-selling game ever in The Legend of Zelda series.
“Nintendo always strives to offer consumers something fun, new and different,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “With its various play modes and the innovative features of the Joy-Con controllers, Nintendo Switch provides unique experiences that people can take with them anywhere and share with anyone.”
While Nintendo Switch sales are off to a record-breaking start, shipments have not yet been able to keep up with such high demand. Nintendo is working to make sure everyone who wants a system is able to buy one, and more systems are continually being shipped. In just over two weeks, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game will launch for Nintendo Switch on April 28 with more content than any other Mario Kartgame in series history, including 48 racing tracks, new Battle modes, new characters and other additions. Competition on Nintendo Switch gets even hotter heading into summer, with the release of the ARMS game on June 16 and the Splatoon 2 game on July 21.
A full accounting of worldwide Nintendo Switch sales, as well as other financial information, will be provided on April 27, when Nintendo issues its fiscal-year earnings release. For more information, keep an eye on Nintendo’s investor relations page at https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en.
Damn. I was honestly hoping for more. Least it broke a record I guess. …meh……..
dude, that is good.
Not by my standards. It would have done even better if Nintendo, once again, wasn’t doing shitty stock of every damn thing they release. *shrug* W/e…
lmao maybe it’s time to lower your unrealistic standards a bit

I never thought I’d see the day you’d act like a fanboy & diss people’s opinions because they aren’t “happy, positive thoughts.” *shrug* Just another person on here suddenly defending Nintendo because they’ve become a fanboy of their Switch.

That’s Microsoft in a nutshell, all right. Unless it’s supposed to be me. In which case, you should be using Sony products. I only use Microsoft for computers.
It was supposed to be me but I’m in the same exact boat as you. The only thing I use Microsoft for is Windows 10 on my laptop. The only thing that slightly interests me on Xbox one is killer instinct. I played it at a friend’s house and admittedly it was pretty dope, especially with the inclusion of the battletoad dlc. Still not enough to warrant me getting an Xbox1. Also, I think you can just download and play killer instinct on Windows 10, I could be wrong though, I haven’t really bothered looking into it. All my focus has been on SFV lately, pocket rumble could change that soon though…
Only Rare Replay interests me on Xbox One. Was even tempted at one point to buy that console used for a very cheap price just for that game alone. If I count the 5-7 games on it I like as separate games, I can just pretend I bought the Xbox One for 5-7 games & thus not making it a total waste of my money. But since I’ve had the PS4 for over the past year now, I don’t have that temptation anymore. Those days of not having new games to play on Wii U were making me have dumb temptations like that. (You won’t lure me in so easily, Microsoft, to your Xbone! D:< Rawr! lol)
But yeah. You are right about one thing. I shouldn’t have such standards for Nintendo of America that has been utter shit for the last 10 years. Maybe one day when that puppet Reggie is gone… :/
such high standards*
Lol
That’s pretty damn good. Congratulations Ninty!
I’m happy to hear it. Hopefully the switch keeps the momentum till the big hitters release
Awesome! They must’ve hit their 2 mil target at the very least, and Zelda has an attach rate of 102% in the U.S. That’s just crazy.
*P4
Its being said that the Switch has sold 2.5 million units worldwide currently, so you are right
Looks like Nintendo Switch takes the crown for this one. This is huge.
[remembers all of the haters and naysayers who said that the Switch was gonna flop]

How does that crow taste? Anyone want seconds? Xbots? No?
Sony Ponies? No one? Oh…..
it will flop just after E3 w8
*explode in sales
fixed it.
E3 will be a make or break for the Switch… I agree. It could flop or it could double momentum. Well, at least they paced their 1st party releases pretty well
The general public doesn’t even know about e3, and the ones that do don’t pay it any attention. I seriously doubt E3 has the power to make or break the success of the Switch.
It is the jumping off point for news though, so if new games are announced that will be coming out or release dates for other previously announced games, then it will matter. I think it can go along way to the success or failure of a system if other factors are considered such as actual game releases
what planet did you arrive here from as a successful stock investor who has NEWER LOST MONEY EVER and a former pre wii Nintendo investor i find your comments utterly hilarious…anyone who thinks the switch will not hit DS wii like numbers if not far more is living in cloud cuckoo land…
and before you spiut out some idiot speak YES I CAN PREDICT THE FUTURE USING MY COMMONSENSE
NINTENDO WILL DESTROY EVERYONE AT E3 AND THATS A FACT TOOOO
im guessing you also said psp would end gameboy DS and that vita would outsell 3DS…..
and wii was nintendos last console and will finish 3rd in sales vs ps3 and xbox 360, like every other IDIOT HARDLYCORE KNOW NOTHING…
that’s a huge record. I think the Wii gotten beaten by the switch. 0-0
And just in the US…
I helped moving a Wii U copy, you’re welcome….
Out of curiosity since they mentioned him, but when Iwata passed, did Reggie get his job back or did someone else take the position?
Reggie never took his job or lost his own. Reggie has been president of noa for quite a while. Iwata’s job has been taken my Kimishima
Iwata became CEO of NOA if I’m not mistaken.
I looked into it. Reggie is the COO. For some reason I thought Iwata took took over as CEO from him. I must have misremembered.
that’s a huge record. I think the Wii gotten beaten by the switch. 0-0

||Very very soon…||
I can’t wait to see how Nintendo’s future success improves their stock. I invested in Nintendo back when they were down at $25 a share. Now they are at $28 and could jump up higher after E3.
It went up 2% in Japan on Friday, so you’re looking at $29.57 right now. Japan still has one more trading day before the U.S. markets open again on Monday. Hopefully the rise continues on this news. We could see over $30 by next week.
Just think of how many more NES Classic Mini’s Nintendo would have sold if they hadn’t thrown the towel in and gave up.
||They never gave up, High Command stated from the beginning even before it was launched that it would be offered at a limited time and stock, period…||
Better focus production lines on the Nintendo Switch. That’s the machine that will print money.

Would havw surpassed a Million, if more stock was available…
Outstanding. Now they need a good bunch of consoles out for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Must not find themselves unprepared.
I would assume the attach rate to Zelda is due to people from other countries ordering the game from the US. Shipping is cheap for a game, but not for a console.
I bought a master edition because I knew that they’d sell out, but I’m not ready to buy a Switch yet.
Or it could be people like me who purchased the game and still has no Switch and live in USA.
Look at all these nintendo fanboys saying it didnt flop because of launch month lol. The wii u sold well in the first month too you bunch of morons.
The Wii U sold about 400,000 units in the U.S. in its first month, November, the height of shopping season. The Switch sold more than double that in March. The Switch was also on a level with the PS4 and X1, which also launched in November, the height of shopping season. It’s about time for people to drop this. This isn’t the same situation as the Wii U; not even close.

It may or may not be another wii u in terms of sales. You cant judge if its a success or not in its launch month.
I never said that it will be a success, but we also can’t compare this to the Wii U any longer. The situation is very clearly different; not just in terms of sales, but also in terms of marketing, public awareness, consumer interest, and investor interest. If you look at all these areas combined, it becomes pretty apparent that, at this moment in time, the Switch is more likely to be a success than another Wii U.

Ignoring the Article said the Switch is Nintendo’s best selling system of all times. Also ignoring it’s a month and half later, by comparison with Wii U launch, people were able to purchase a Wii U with no demand issues. Yet Switch sells are still having demand problems. Why is that?
You just want it to flop. Lol.
I knew Nintendo wouldn’t let us down! How does that feel Xbots? (I’ve really been enjoying Breath of the wild by the way.)
Does anyone know howthis compares to other March releases?
Its fun to watch them boo and hiss seeing them xbot fans wrong how they thought the Switch would be a miss. Dr Tre’s butt now they must kiss.
