Zelda’s Breath Of The Wild Voice Actress Gives Her Thoughts On The Character

Princess Zelda is undeniably a very important character in the Legend of Zelda series, so casting her first voice actress was a huge task. However, it seems like the actress they picked has an excellent grasp of the character in Breath of the Wild. In an interview with Game Rant, Patricia Summersett discussed her inspiration when voicing the Hylian Princess and what she thinks about the character. Check out the full interview here.

Where did you draw your inspiration from when auditioning for the role of Zelda?

“Well, when I auditioned for the role I didn’t know what I was auditioning for, so I was more going with the themes of the kind of cadence that they were looking for. You know, an interpretation of. When I first came in with my initial ideas. I had a feeling it was a princess, she was younger but had the weight of the world on her shoulders, and had a kind of timeless/ageless quality where age was not necessarily equivalent to the age on paper. And, yeah, that she had a sort of regal sense to her. That’s kind of what I picked up from the breakdown of it. So, that’s what I initially went with. Once I found out that I got the part, which was quite further down in the process, we started recording. I think a lot of the decision have been made about what the direction would be anyway, so it was a negotiation between, I guess, my sensibilities and that of Nintendo’s vision.”

      1. exactly, my drama class has alot of good actors and actresses and we know how frustrating that is.

      1. No, you should be silent. These comments should be a place for discussion, except you always interrupt and act like your opinion is final. Nintendo does a lot of good things, but it’s certainly not a perfect company. Every time someone points that out, you say that person is a “sony slave” or something similar.

Let me be clear: of course you’re allowed to say what your opinion is and what you think about a situation, but at least try to keep an open mind. People want to talk about subject, but you come in and cut the entire conversation off because “it is blasphemous to go against nintendo”

  1. I never imagined Zelda’s voice in the past as the way it was in Breath of the Wild. But I do love the voice of Zelda and think it fits her character perfectly.

She’s not British, though. Nor is her accent straight up English, either. She’s actually an American from upper Michigan where they speak something called yooper (I think that’s what it was called) which is an offshoot of the English accent.

  5. I dunno in some scene’s I thought her voice worked very well but in others I really didn’t like the voice. but I atribute that more to the voice direction than the actress

  6. She did a fine job.

I just wonder though, what’s with Nintendo holding these auditions and not saying what the roles are people are trying out for? They did it with the role of Fox for SFZ: The Battle Begins, and now this. What goes through these peoples’ minds when they learn they are THE voice of a character like these? Is it like “oh, shit, I have to nail this” or like “HOLY SHIT I CAN’T BELIEVE IT THIS IS AMAZING!”

I hope to feel that someday, voicing a character.

  7. BotW’s voice acting is about as basic as many dubs of japanese games tend to be. Listening to the voice acting of a game in the language it was developed in is almost always the best way to play. Except that isn’t an option like it is with 90% of other imports :/

    niiiiiiiinteeeeeendooooooooo whyyyyyyyyyyy

  8. Wasn’t a fan of her acting in the game.
But I would not mind her taking the task in the future, there is definitively room for improvement.

    1. She didn’t have an English accent. That may have been what she was attempting, but it’s not what she achieved.

  9. Personally, I think she did an excellent job. I’m glad Link is still mute, although it is implied in the game that he can speak. I wish more of the characters were voiced, but baby steps…

Link has always been able to talk. It’s why everyone knew his name & such in past games when he was just a nobody to the rest of the world. It wasn’t til Breath of the Wild that most characters of his time period knew who he was (Link) & what he was (the Hero that saves Hyrule time & time again since time immemorial.)

I enjoyed her voice. Was there more to be desired? Yes. But such is the world. Nearly everything can be better than what it is. Whether she’ll stand up to future Zelda voice actresses if she doesn’t become the go-to gal for future games remains to be seen. Either way, I look forward to more Zelda games with actual voice acting. Now if they could just port Hyrule Warriors to Switch with full voice overs instead of it being relegated to the narrator.
