The development team that worked on Zelda: Breath Of The Wild came up with a neat trick to regain stamina when scaling up one of the many cliffs in the open world game; to stab your sword into the cliff face and rest on it. The slightly unconventional idea never came to be due to Shigeru Miyamoto’s feedback. In a recent GameSpot interview with Zelda Art Director Satoru Takizawa and Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi they had the following to say on the matter:
“Until about halfway through the development, we had a spec where you could take your weapon and stab it into a wall. When your stamina gauge was dwindling you could stab the weapon and kind of hang out and rest there.” – Takizawa
“So the answer is that Mr. Miyamoto heard of the concept he said, ‘You can’t stand on the tip of a sword. This is strange.’ And then we explained, ‘No no no, you stab it in.’ Then he’s like, ‘No, it’s not going to work.’ Another idea is that it’s very hard to actually stab a sword into a big piece of rock. We considered that you can stab them into cracks or crevices in the wall, but then you can’t freely use that feature anywhere you want, so I decided not to implement it.”
So starting from the early stages of development we had been constantly showing Mr. Miyamoto our progress. At times we would even show him once a week what we’d been working on, because if we don’t do that, and then go face-to-face and present the idea, tables might be flipped!’” – Fujibayashi
Climbing and stamina works fine how it is.
This kind of resting mechanic would have taken away the thrill of the climb.
For sure. It is perfect as you get more stamina as the game goes and then you are good. Just making it is pretty exhilarating at times
Agreed – however I’d love to see the next update cut down the AMOUNT OF FRIGGIN RAIN!!!!???

Now now, Commander… You’ve reached your quota for probing this month…
What a fucking Moeran!

I guess this is a minor spoiler:
Throughout playing the game, I was expecting there to be an armour set that would negate the slipperiness of rain. Would’ve been a cool bonus to the rubber set.
More like the climbing set.
Like Mike S said, it should have been a secondary bonus for the climbing gear when you max it out. Too bad they didn’t think of a secondary bonus for maxing out armor sets with a set bonus. As for those without a set bonus, they could have finally gotten an actual set bonus for maxing them out.
Right!? I’ve had the unfortunate luck of having it start raining EVERY TIME I was doing something with fire, like lighting the furnaces at the labs. Every. Damn. Time.
I wouldn’t mind the rain if the full climbers set would give you extra grip so you wouldn’t slip
Damn Rain… https://static1.e621.net/data/e9/30/e930e4e67bf4e84453e281fb9280b0d3.png
If the weapon sets with a bonus got a second bonus for being maxed out, they could have included the ability to climb without rain being an issue as the Climber armor set’s second bonus. Sadly, either no one thought of the idea of a second bonus or someone, like Miyamoto, shot the idea down for whatever reason.
Love the rain. I could just doze off in a Happy little dream state….
Fucking Miyamoto… Always removing things from games and adding gimmicks that only he wants.
I would have liked hanging off the wall, and getting a nice view from there.
The view is your reward for getting to the top :)
It’s cooler and more exciting from the side.
SHUT UP! NEVER DISRESPECT MIYAMOTO IN FRONT OF ME!
You shut up! Yeah, I said it!
You forgot to add this part.
Haha I was wondering where I got that from. Family Guy!
Stop being a moeran! gimmicks make the game better you idiot!
Years ago I’d give you that, but nowadays he’s losing his edge.
Ignore that clown. Even the slightest of comments against Nintendo will set him off. I’m pretty sure he’s related to Bowler A.A.
But you can already do that… Hanging off a wall and “getting a nice view” doesn’t use any stamina. Stamina is only depleted while you’re climbing.
The visual representation of the act of hanging from your sword.
While the idea is neat, it has an obvious severe problem. If you can do that, you eliminate a major reason to ever invest in the stamina gauge.
Completionists would be fine.
I feel like they should have kept this in but had it only be certain weapons that could be used this way. Would have added an extra element of realism, as you do take short breaks and rest your weight on your climbing pegs.
If they got Miyamoto to climb a cliff face as part of ‘research’, he would have ensured this would be a feature. :P
You mean like the hook shot? I think like Miyamoto, it would have taken away realism on the climbing part and freedom of doing it
But you can jump like 10 feet off of a horse and precisely aim an arrow and hit your mark perfectly? You can use a little glider to glide anywhere with all those heavy weapons and armor you got on? You can make apple pie WITH ONLY A FIREPIT??? GTFOH
As usual, more bat-shit insane people white-knighting Nintendo and their stupid decisions.
More power to the hackers, so long as you have the Wii U version.
lol. It isn’t white knighting just because not everyone in the world agrees with you. Giving you an at-will way to recoup stamina while climbing is a terrible idea for balance, cool though the sword stabbing idea is.
You remind me of a game genie fan.
I really don’t care who I remind you of. Amped-up difficulty is not fun.
Should’ve had an ice-axe weapon, or a cam hook, that you could do this with.
whens miyamoto gonna retire already
Miyamota is immortal.
Lol
I didn’t know Miyamoto was a table flipper.
“Scissors don’t beat rock!”(ノ°Д°)ノ︵ ┻━┻
Don’t really need that when, with the climbing armor and a haste potion, you can climb as fast as…

Weird idea,I’m glad they removed it
How is it any harder for Link to stab through rock than it is for him to climb mountains and rocks like spiderman? When I first started playing this, I was surprised that Link already had the ability to climb. I thought that would be something he had to learn. He must have super sticky hands.
“it’s very hard to stab a sword into a big piece of rock.”
… Oh, right, gotta keep it realistic. *climbs virtually every surface with bare hands, leaps from impossible highs and survives by using a hang glider at the last second, gets shot with multiple arrows and eviscerated by countless swords/spears without dying*
Yeah, surely it should’ve been less about the realism, and more about appropriate balance of the game. Either way, if they used silly logic to get to the correct decision, I’ll let them off.
I agree that the idea wouldn’t have worked, but Miyamoto’s response was terrible. He should have pointed out what was wrong with it in terms of gameplay first. Being able to climb infinitely would remove the challenge associated with traversing the game world. Why figure out how to open a giant gate when you can just climb over the wall? I haven’t played BotW, by the way, so there’s probably an a more relevant example that I could have used.
I’m not a fan of the stamina whatsoever. It doesn’t add balance to the game in any way considering you can somehow eat a full meal and regain stamina while climbing.
All the stamina wheel does is make getting around the world slower.
Also the removal of the hookshot is a sin against all fans of the series. All the climbing mechanic does is pad the games time, that’s it. Adding stamina to the mix just pads it further.

Oh you mean like climbers in real life do with those hook things? Yeah. You totally can’t pierce a rock face in real life. *rolls eyes* Miyamoto’s excuse sounds like the excuse of an idiot that doesn’t know about the tools used to climb mountains that don’t have crevices & rocks jutting out from the mountain side. So many great things they could have done with the climbing armor set. :/
