The Nintendo 3DS family of systems will soon be adding a new member. On July 28, New Nintendo 2DS XL makes its debut in the United States at a suggested retail price of $149.99. The New Nintendo 2DS XL system gives consumers a third choice of hand-held systems, one that offers pricing and features that fit between the Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL systems. New Nintendo 2DS XL will launch on the same day as two big new games for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems: Hey! PIKMIN and Miitopia.
The Nintendo 3DS family of systems will soon be adding a new member. On July 28, New Nintendo 2DS XL makes its debut in the United States at a suggested retail price of $149.99.
“This new addition to Nintendo’s portable hardware line demonstrates our commitment to the hand-held market,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “New Nintendo 2DS XL sports a beautiful clamshell design and offers a great balance between price and performance.”
The new system will be available in a stylish black/turquoise color, and will use the same size large screen found on New Nintendo 3DS XL systems. As the name of the new system implies, visuals will be displayed in 2D only. The system is lighter but still packs the same power as New Nintendo 3DS XL, and has built-in NFC support for amiibo cards and figures. It can play the massive library of quality Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS games in 2D. Nintendo systems are also the only dedicated video game systems where people can find their favorite characters and game franchises, such as Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Kirby, Pokémon, Fire Emblem, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., Animal Crossing and The Legend of Zelda.
There are over a thousand games in the Nintendo 3DS game library and more are always on the way, including two that launch on the same day as New Nintendo 2DS XL. These new games will offer fun new experiences for New Nintendo 2DS XL owners, and for owners of any Nintendo 3DS family systems.
- Hey! PIKMIN: In this brand-new style of Pikmin game, players guide Captain Olimar through 2D side-scrolling levels and collect Sparklium to refuel his crashed ship, the S.S. Dolphin 2, so he can escape the planet. The touch-screen controls let players choose the right Pikmin to toss at enemies and objects, which is critical to defeating foes and solving the many puzzles Olimar encounters during his adventure.
- Miitopia: Band together with your Mii and Mii friends to explore your own personalized world of Miitopia. Cast Mii characters into various roles and watch hilarious scenes unfold as they work together to defeat the Dark Lord who has stolen the faces of townspeople of Miitopia. Players can bring in their created Mii characters from the Miitomo or Tomodachi Life games, or create their own Mii team in the game. This game has a lighthearted tone with traditional and strategic RPG-like elements, including customization, relationship building and team management.
Remember that New Nintendo 2DS XL features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/2ds/new-nintendo-2ds.

It seems pointless. I love the design though.
That moment when you second guess whether the “1DS” is going to remain a joke.
There is going to be lag in games like Pokemon sun? xD Bc if its going to be laggy i don’t know the point of making a new portable.
They made it sound like it would have the internals of the new Nintendo 3ds XL. So there shouldn’t be any lag.
This was my thought as well.
Is this coming with guaranteed IPS screens at least?
But… why??
This is just way too late, in my opinion. I mean, this is easily the best looking iteration of the 3DS, but it makes me worried of how much Nintendo is trying to keep the 3DS alive instead of pouring their all into the Switch. At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next Pokémon games got announced for the 3DS instead of the Switch, which would kill a big success for the Switch. That being said, if this came out back in 2016, this would have been a great last hoorah for the 3DS, but now it just feels tacked on to try to make a quick buck off of collector’s and people who skipped the New 3DS.
why do people think the switch is the successor to the 3ds. why cant nintendo have 2 simultaneous hanldheld (witch one is more of a console anyway) at the same time. the 3ds is not dead… yet. In 2 years nintendo will officially kill off the 3ds and introduce either a successor or a brand new thing entirely.
Because one of the WiiU’s biggest problems were the software droughts and having to wait several months for new games to finally come out. If they killed off the 3DS (which it’s high time for, considering it’s already 6+ years old), they could focus their entire development-power on the Switch, eliminating the problem we had with the WiiU right away. Considering the Switch is handheld and home-console in one, it doesn’t seem too unreasonable to me to make all their development teams, both handheld and home console departments, focus on the Switch, it would get so many games.
Really not sure why they are so adamant about having two handhelds on the market, and competing with themselves.
well for one thing they are different systems and competing for different markets. 3ds is for mostly marketed for kids and light experiences, while the switch is more a console (can play 2 people on one switch, more demanding games, can be hooked up to the tv.). Also the wii u had droughts because Nintendo gave very little attention to the wii u because it did terribly and nintendo saved all their big projects for the switch instead of putting on the wii u.
I’m genuinely concerned as well. The only reason why the Wii U failed was because they gave the 3DS way too much attention, and I’m not too sure they’ve even learned their lesson if this means 2 more years under the 3DS’s belt.
Nintendo: we are introducing the new 3ds
Internet: thats a terrible name. whats next? new 2ds xl?
nintendo: hold my bear
I see that its a bear and not a beer because Nintendo is just that awesome!
This. Like I should have seen coming. But i didnt. Oh Nintendo. I love you and the design of this. But you sure do surprise me.
I really like the design and that’s a great position for the camera. Lets the top be smaller or the screen to be bigger.
Before anyone brings this up in the comments, since I’ve seen it mentioned on Twitter a lot, yes I know the header image is from an older variant of the 2DS. There was nothing I could do about it, as the images that were made available were small in size and header images require a much larger size. I even tested this myself to make sure before I published the article, and they looked off.
Looks pretty sleek. My guess is that this is meant to allow Nintendo to kill off the original 2DS design. Thank goodness. What’s with the screens though? Is that the widest it opens? Doesn’t look as functional as previous iterations.
Why should it be killed off?
I thought the design of the 2ds was terrible. It looked ugly and wasn’t very portable considering its size and shape. Just my opinion.
It was most likely made towards very young kids.
Nintendo 2DS costs half, it’s the entry point, though I would be happy to see it out. The Nintendo 2DS does not sell that well, though it’s the console of my nephew. Eventually their parents would have not payed 150$ for the better console leaving him without a Nintendo console. ^^
I think this is actually pretty great for kids. There’s no way you’re going to give a 9 year old a 300 switch, but something like this would be perfect. In fact I might know a couple people who I’ll be picking one up for.
Month late on that April Fools joke, Nintendo.
The third version of Pokémon’s 7th generation games should arrive in late 2018 on the 3DS, and I’m betting early 2019 is when we’ll get the official announcement that the 3DS family will cease production. Whether Pokémon and every other franchise will be making the Switch, or they decide to announce a separate dedicated handheld to succeed the 3DS, this has to be the last bit of milking that they do.
The design is beautiful. This should keep the 3DS production going as long as people buying the 3DS.
Looks nice but im sort of confused now. Are they going to be marketing this or wt? I was hoping the plan was to slowly let the 3ds and 2ds fade out and make switch the main focus. There goes Nintendo shooting themselves in the foot again. This could actually turn into one of those collector items like the Gameboy micro which till this day I wish I had lol
This new addition to Nintendo’s portable hardware line demonstrates our commitment to the hand-held market,”
Not really.
I like the design, if I ever need a replacement 3ds I’ll pick one up. Or
If I wanted to give one as a gift.
Xenoblade here I come!
So Miitopia has a release date now? It’s certainly sooner than I expected. If I get that, it certainly won’t be on launch day- Arms and Splatoon 2 will likely still have my attention.
The design is beautiful. This should keep the 3DS production going as long as people buying the 3DS.
I was hoping for a 2ds mini not a clan sigh. I still love my game boy advance mini that came out.
Not a XL …some reason auto changed XL to blanket heh
Wow now auto made clan say blanket…
But without 3d, the screen resolution is basically cut in half. And saying this demonstrates their “commitment to the hand-held market” is downplaying the Switch as a hand-held. I don’t know what to think of this, but I certainly won’t buy it, I of course play Monster Hunter in 3d.
I’m all over this 🖤 I traded in my 3DS a while back but this new design and (hopefully cheap) price makes me want to re-buy. PLEASE RELEASE IN LOADS OF COLOURS, NINTENDO.
https://youtu.be/hHW0FgiB7TI?t=11m19s
I traded in my New 3DS XL last year. I will likely pick this up to play MH Stories. I really like the design….I’m hoping we might see some nice special editions like the Dragon Quest Metal Slime Edition.
While it looks like a good console it add a lot of confusion to the Nintendo xDS line because unlike the 2DS has a clamshell design. Too many xDS designs! They should retire the New 3DS since it’s not selling so much, keeping the New 3DS XL and eventually the 2DS. This new price point is very good. 50 dollars less should guarantee more sales.
Now please look at a Switch Pocket and let naturally die the Nintendo 3DS in late 2018. We need all manpower towards the Nintendo Switch.
The main concept of the Switch is to Switch from handheld to TV, why the hell would they release a Switch Pocket that can’t Switch? Just think about the microscopic joycons…
What IBM means?
Things do change, and concepts become trademarks, eventually.
More like wishful thinking.
It’s just a trademark, like it’s Xbox, that was a console (box) but it’s now a service too unrelated to the console (PC).
Nintendo has no limits, they just have to decide the appealing of such solution.
I think a fixed handheld supporting Switch games at 149/199 would sell a truckload.
People who dont have a 3DS can now buy a nice cheap 2DS i dont see a problem
I don’t understand
Oh snap! Ya know.. I never use my 3d feature lol
You know what, I like this, actually! I think it’s a really great, really smart, budget-ish alternative to the N3DSXL for people who would struggle to easily afford/justify the cost of the premier device, but who want something better than a standard 2DS.
It’s 100% identical to an N3DSXL except for cosmetic trim, and no 3D – a feature which on the “old” 3DS, many people turned off anyway since it’s so hard to stay focused (I realize that’s way better on N3DS, but still). So it’s a proven form factor at a reasonable price with only the platform’s most divisive feature removed. What’s not to admire about it?
In fact, if I didn’t already own an “old” 3DSXL, and had to choose between this or that, I would buy this before I bought the “O3DSXL” again. Don’t get me wrong, the 3D is cool and all, but with as hard as it is to stay in focus on the old ones, with the absence of the “c-stick”, absence of pixel-perfect SNES emulation, and non-support for the [admittedly still VERY SMALL] library of N3DS exclusives, yeah I’d rather have all of that without 3D, than what I have right now….
….all that said, the top tier N3DSXL is still my personal target. But for the Mrs or for the kiddo for whom this stuff matters so much less, no doubt, I’d ABSOLUTELY consider buying one of these guys! Get myself an “N3DSXL”, get a “N2DSXL”, and then let them decide between themselves which one gets it, and which gets my “O3DSXL”. Then we can all play! :-D
Cheers!
It looks like … an IphoNintendo2DSXL
