Kimishima Explains Reasoning Behind Their Console Re-Designs, How He Wants To Take Same Approach With Other Hardware

In an announcement that admittedly not many of us expected earlier this week with the reveal of the New Nintendo 2DS XL, Nintendo’s President, Tatsumi Kimishima, has explained the reasoning as to why Nintendo often re-designs their hardware. Taken from an official summary Q&A sheet (which outlines all the things that were mentioned in the Financial Briefing) Kimishima goes on to explain that it’s the changing consumer needs that influence their console re-designs, most notably, the DS family. He also notes that he wants to take this approach with other Nintendo hardware. You can check out what he had to say in regards to re-designs below:

Kimishima: With regards to our Nintendo 3DS business, our software sales figures in the last fiscal year were boosted significantly by titles, such as Pokémon titles, which helped increase hardware sales, and led to an overall year over year growth in sales of both hardware and software. And as discussed during our presentation, high demand for Nintendo 2DS is driven by an attractive price point on top of its hardware appeal. This is what gives Nintendo 2DS the largest growth rate out of the entirety of our Nintendo 3DS business. We are planning to launch New Nintendo 2DS XL during this fiscal year. New Nintendo 2DS XL has screens that are the same large size as the New Nintendo 3DS XL, and can play more than 1000 Nintendo 3DS titles already released, at a very desirable price point. Our expectation is that if we are able to continue to provide enjoyable software, we will always meet the needs of consumers who want to continue playing on the existing Nintendo 3DS series. To that end, we are always thinking about what kinds of software consumers are going to want, and evaluating our hardware cycles to make sure that we are meeting that need. This means that our product lifecycles are not going to last for a set number of years, but will be flexible enough to change when required by changing consumer needs. In general, this is the sort of thinking we want to adopt for all our hardware development. We want to have flexible hardware cycles where the launch of new hardware sets off the development of the next hardware that will respond to consumer trends.

  1. I think I liked the other new layout better, not sure about mobiles but it takes a lot more effort to scroll down and see headlines in this layout.

      1. Are you guys maybe iterested in having the layout spiced up a bit? Meaning keeping the overall layout, but making it more compfortable to read and giving it a nice little “Nintendo touch”.
        I have to agree with shinygold2, that it is quite hard to read (trust me, I’m a web developer ;) )

      2. It reminds me of the old school layout we had a couple years back.
        I liked seeing how many comments an article has and that was removed ever since.

      3. The problem is the text size, and the placement.
        Combined it makes everything feel very misplaced, and makes text cut to the next row much more often than what feels natural.
        Especially in the comments, as only three or four words are able to fit per line in most comment-replies.

      4. It all just looks like bad html from the 90’s to me. 90% of the time I check this site while I’m at work which blocks most websites, this site is one of the very few I can view but it comes through as really basic html for some reason. It feels like I’m looking at geocities or something lolololol

    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

      Ghostbusters 2 does not get the love it deserves in my opinion. But I hope most Ghostbuster purist fans can agree that G2 is way better than that god damn abomination of a reboot that came out last year. *has nothing but dark thoughts for that Feig prick these days because of that… THING!!*

      1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

        ||Thank darkness for honest trailers, I don’t have to waste any second on that abomination, too bad I can’t say the same about ID2…||

          I honestly enjoyed Independence Day 2. It does take a bit of a detour from the original movie’s tone when they reveal there are other alien races out there huddled up together on a planet because their home planets were destroyed by the evil harvester aliens, so I can see why some people might not like it. (Still not liking the absence of Will Smith even though Liam Hemsworth is an okay replacement as the serious comic relief character.)

          1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

            ||It suffered the same fate as Ghostbusters, it was a SNL parody of itself where everything that made the original great was nowhere to be found and the aliens were reduced to imbeciles…||

            ||Every character from theoriginal were also parodies of themselves, especially the human Bill Pullman, it was only tolerable because of the human Jeff Goldblum…||

            ||The entire plot made no sense following the previous one and as soon as that sphere came into themux, it became not only a parody but a children’s cartoon, childish and unoriginal…||

  2. He’s obviously talking about the Switch here. Switch mini that’s portable only is most likely coming alongside a ground up Pokémon game that’s not Pokémon Stars.

  3. Boss from this site is here? i will say it anyway

    IT could be very nice to also add somewhere on the left or right a special list with 3-4 most important articles there from the week. Like Switch sales for the week or the DLC news or the new Arms character so everyone can read these news if some people missing for some days so they wont have to scroll down to much or other important news just to be these articles on the top of that list with the most intersting things from a week

    1. Yes, I realise that so I’ve added that to the bottom of the page or post depending on what you are on. You can catch the top posts below this.

      1. could you please use Disqus? I try to use my facebook account to comment but it tells me to fill out all fields before posting a comment but there are no fields to fill out/i’ve done all the requirements to post yet it wont let me. so i have to resort to this twitter account i dont use. Disqus is a lot better

      2. I’m afraid I can’t use Disqus because the blog is hosted by WordPress and they do not allow it. It’s a pain as I’d love to use it for the comment system.

  4. Is there a way to go back to the old design? I think this new design would work better for mobiles only, and the previous look was better for PC… Please tell me this change to MyNintendoNews is temporary…

  5. No offense to the Order, but kill the 3/2DS! Kill it with fire! No distractions from our primary system for cattle or weapon developers. *awaits official chastisement *

    1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

      ||Negative, the support will be continued for the mean time, the Switch will be getting heavy support however…||

  6. Kimishima is right, pursue this route but retire old hardware to avoid confusion (New Nintendo 3DS normal + Nintendo 2DS). Let just survive the New 3DS XL + New 2DS XL.

  7. the images above the headlines are too big and take a lot of room. i can barely read one headline per page scroll now. I liked it better when i could see around 3 headlines on my screen (subject to screen size).

  8. “New Nintendo 2DS XL has screens that are the same large size as the New Nintendo 3DS XL, and can play more than 1000 Nintendo 3DS titles already released, at a very desirable price point.”
    It’s literally the same price as the standard New 3DS and significantly more expensive then the 2DS, while being barely cheaper than the New 3DS XL.

  9. the redesign is better when its not viewed on mobile so a temp thing to do is just request desktop version, also i cannot comment using my fb credentials/login in mobile version so i have to use desktop mode.

  10. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

    While the site layout is way too spaced out between comments, I think I can live with it for the next year til the next change in layout. Anyway, on to the article’s topic…

    A revision of the Switch confirmed. (I know this “confirmed” thing has become a meme but in this case, it’s most likely true & not just some silly little meme.)
