Nintendo Details The Upcoming Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Expansion Pass

Hailed by both critics and audiences as one of the most ambitious video games Nintendo has ever produced, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game has earned universal acclaim. The massive open-air adventure will soon receive even more engaging content with the Expansion Pass, composed of two planned DLC packs for both the Nintendo Switch and Wii U versions. The first pack, called The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – The Master Trials, launches this summer, while the second DLC pack launches in holiday 2017. The two packs are only available as a bundle for a price of $19.99. The first pack of downloadable content will add the Trial of the Sword and a challenging new Hard Mode to the game, as well as other fun and useful features.

“Whether you have already completed the adventure or are just getting ready to paraglide into Hyrule for the first time, this new downloadable Expansion Pass makes this massive game even bigger and more engrossing,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We are always looking for new ways to provide fun and exciting experiences for our fans.”

Here is a breakdown of everything The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – The Master Trials has to offer:

Trial of the Sword: By accessing this location, players can challenge the new Trial of the Sword (previously known as “Cave of Trials Challenge”), where enemies appear one after another. Link starts without any armor or weapons, and if he defeats all of the enemies in the room he can proceed to the next area. Trial of the Sword will include around 45 total rooms for players to complete. When Link clears all of the trials, the true power of the Master Sword will awaken and always be in its glowing powered-up state.
Hard Mode: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is already considered one of the most thrilling games in The Legend of Zelda series, and fans looking for a challenge are in for a treat with the new Hard Mode. In Hard Mode, the “ranks” of enemies in the game are increased (i.e. Red Bokoblins change to Blue), and players might even encounter higher-ranking enemies they wouldn’t find through normal play. Enemies will also slowly recover health in battle, forcing you to defeat them more quickly. They will also more easily spot Link as he approaches them, making these enemies tougher to sneak up on. In addition, floating planks held aloft by balloons will be scattered around Hyrule. By successfully reaching these planks, players can battle enemies and collect treasure.
Hero’s Path Mode: Exploring Hyrule is exciting, but with such a large world it’s sometimes hard for players to remember where they’ve been. To help with tracking progress, the new Hero’s Path Mode will document every step players take, and mark their path in green on the map. The route taken will be tracked for the player’s last 200 hours of play time, with an included slider to track footsteps on a timeline. This even works retroactively, so players that have already put many hours into the game will be able to see where they have traveled. This feature will help in identifying the locations they haven’t visited in this vast world, and may help players find those Shrines they haven’t encountered yet.
Travel Medallion: There will be a new treasure chest somewhere in the game world which contains the Travel Medallion. With the Travel Medallion, players can create a temporary new travel point on the map where they are currently standing. Link can then transport himself to that point at any time. Only one travel point can be registered on the map at a time.
Korok Mask: By finding the new Korok Mask, players will have a much easier time finding Korok locations in the game. When equipped, the mask will shake, indicating that a Korok is hidden somewhere nearby.
New Equipment: Eight new pieces of equipment inspired by previous characters and games in the series will be added to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild after downloading the first DLC pack. Once discovered by the player, they will yield equipment themed after fan-favorite games and characters such as Midna, Tingle, Phantom and Majora’s Mask.
More information about the second DLC pack will be revealed in the future. All DLC is available for both the Nintendo Switch and Wii U versions of the game.

Starting today, players will be able to experience the game in one of nine audio languages [Japanese, English, French (France), French (Canada), German, Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Latin America), Italian and Russian], with a different language used for on-screen text by downloading a free software update. To enable this feature in the Wii U version of the game, players will need to download a Voice Pack from Nintendo eShop.

  1. Sounds good to me. This is a worthwhile $10 for me. Excited to see what the next pack brings.

  2. Unlocking the full powered Master Sword all the time?!?!

    HELL FUCKING YES!!! :D

Can you activate Hard Mode on an existing file? I hope so. If you haven’t guessed yet I’m totally going to buy this.

          1. Daruk was the worst one in my opinion. I think the main problem with the voice acting was how technical it sounded. Every word was pronounced perfectly and even exaggerated a bit. And Zelda was WAY over acted. Over acting just makes everything awkward. And that’s the best way to describe the voice acting in BotW. Awkward. People just don’t talk like that in the real world. I played through FFIV remake recently, and the voice acting in that game is far superior than BotW.

          2. They were all bad. Not just one or two characters, but all of them were poorly voiced. IMO King Daphnes was the worst. “To KNEW the history of Hyrule is to KNEW the history of calamity ganon…” I disagree that Mipha and Zelda were done well. I would argue both of them were just generic timid female voices typical of most english dubs for anime. The voicing in this game is cringeworthy. And thats coming from someone who has put roughly 200 hours into this game. The voice acting just breaks the immersion. You instantly remember your playing a game and the fact that the voice over work is embarrassingly bad takes you out of it. I was so embarrased when a cut scene started in front of my gf who doesnt play video games. She just looked at the tv, then back to me, then back at the tv… and then silence.

        1. My native language is not English, and I’ve grown up hearing the native language of anything, plus subtitles.
This is a very welcome patch for me.

I don’t see why anyone would be against people having more choices.

          1. I don’t think it’s about being against having choices. There’s just a certain number of people in any fanbase of japanese material that will insist that the english version is garbage, almost arbitrarily. If you watch the english version of an anime, you will be invariably mocked by people who snobbishly act like you haven’t seen the “real” show. While it’s true that sometimes the japanese version is notably better, people will claim it all the time and sneer at those who disagree.

            1. Also it’s common knowledge that the voice acting industry in Japan is top-tier employment and pays far more handsomely than the same job does in the West, and so there is a REASON the originals are better.

              1. Thank you for proving my point by making it a blanket statement without even establishing a particular project where the Japanese voice actors are better.

Honestly, half the time these elitist snobs never even watch the sub and just ASSUME it must be terrible.

                1. Actually, I think some animes are better in english: Excel Saga, Coyboy Bebop, Trigun, Yu Yu Hakusho, and every Disney dubbed Ghibli film are some of those.
Bleach, Naruto and One Piece are better in Japanese in my opinion.
And then there is Dragon Ball Z Abridged.

                  1. The emotion really. Your reading the subtitles so you actually do know what they are saying. I personally prefer English voice acting it only if it’s done well. BotW is really done that well.

        2. I’m just going to say this, when the botw trailer aired at the switch presentation and Zelda started crying it gave the chills. The American trailer did not have the same effect on me.

  3. Great! I decided to stop playing Zelda after the third dungeon. Put in 60 hours and decided to wait for the hard mode. And I’m gna play it all over to the end and beat it on hard mode and that’s where I’m going to dedicate myself to really exploring all of Hyrule

  4. I was really hoping for hard mode that they would include stamina depletion upon weapon usage making it even more of a souls like game.

    1. I welcome their turnaround of priorities if it means we get things we’ve been asking for for years. Japanese voice options aren’t my thing (I really prefer to dub things myself when applicable), but this could be just the first step for them.

    2. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

      ||High Command has much more to reveal in due time regarding the Switch in every area, everything will just fall into place…||

  9. So the hard mode DLC doesn’t mention anything about rebalancing the final boss yet. Not good. Difficulty-wise, the final boss was pretty much the main problem of me and many other people, so I hoped the hard mode DLC would fix that. I certainly like the changes this hard mode is offering so far, but unless they change something about the final boss, I’m not sure if I’m sold on it.

  12. I’m not pleased. This should have all been in the game to begin with! They purposely held content back to add them as DLC. In turn, they did not create original content for the DLC that is worth your money!

Trial of the Sword: Has been in any other Zelda game. Should be free!

Hard Mode: Really? You charge money for a change in stats and balloon planks? Master Quest has been in any Zelda game and should be free!

Hero’s Path Mode: Again, a small change in code, not a feature. Should be a free update!

Travel Medallion: Same! A small change in code. Should be free!

Korok Mask: Should have been a feature of the Shiekah sensor! How can you charge for this!

New Equipment: That’s the only thing I consider actual content, for $2!

This costs $10. That’s not worth my money and it shouldn’t be worth yours!
Real content should give you something to do in the game. In other words: It should add gameplay content and replay value and not features that you don’t need anymore because you already finished the game!

This is what should have been in the DLC:
A new town with new shops and special stores or minigames.
New and interesting quests (not fetch quests).
    New items/armor/weapons.
New enemies that are not just a recoloring of current ones, but completely new types.
    New bosses.
    New Shrines.

That’s the absolute minimum we deserve for the $20 expansion pass! In comparison, this is what we got for only $12 Mario Kart 8 DLC: 6 characters, 16 tracks (!!!), and 12 vehicle parts!

I was already disappointed by lack of content in the main game. But I understood that most of the effort went into making the giant overworld. So I was really looking forward to the DLC in hopes it would add alot more to do in the game. But this is nothing short of a rip-off!

    1. Entitled much? If they had new enemies a new town, and new stores/items, everyone who didnt buy thr dlc would say THAT should have been in the original game. Theres just no pleasing people who love to bitch. What your asking for would require a fuck ton of development time, and 10 dollars would not justify the cost of that development. People like you dont appreciate the man power and enormous amount of work that goes into making these games. You just think everything should be handed to you on silver platter and it should cost what you deem it worthy of costing… screw you pal. Your not a game dev and you dont know what this content is worth. Your in no position to argue all this stuff should have been in the original game.

      1. *You’re

Anyways, I totally agree with you. A lot of this kids or peeps don’t know how much effort to takes to develop these games or don’t understand the value of the industry and think they know about this business! I think the current price for it is worth it! On another point though I want Nintendo to keep releasing DLC for as long as they can and I would be willing to pay for the effort! Some of the ideas darthchris mentioned aren’t that bad like a shop with weapons or more shrines and stuff. Overall tho I think the packs so far are great!

      2. You have absolutely no fucking clue how games are made! I’m a programmer and know very well how much effort went into making the DLC. It was close to zero!
The making of the game itself was a huge undertaking. The big portion of the development went into creating the overworld and making the graphics and physics engine run and creating an AI system.
Creating additional content (when the game is finished) takes the least amount of effort, when the API is designed well. All you need to do is to model the 3D objects and place them on the overworld and define its behaviour. Creating a house and two NPCs with dialog and a quest would take one person approx. two hours! In one day a small dev team would make a whole town! In one or two weeks they could make an original town with new people, assets, textures, items etc. Just look at the modding community! If the game was open for modding, we would have more content than this DLC offers within one day, and for free!
I know what $10 worth of content looks like, and it’s nothing like this DLC. I will spend this money on an indie game like Shovel Knight and get 20+ hours of gameplay and actual value because I can see that people actually created content for this $10 game, and didn’t just tinker around with code like a 12 year old Minecraft modder!
What pisses me off about Nintendo fanboys like you is how delusional you are! That’s why Nintendo can pull this off, because idiots like you will pay $20 for some clothes and code changes and get very defensive when someone like me criticizes Nintendo.
Go suck Miyamoto’s dick, maybe he will increase weapon durability for that!

      3. They worked on this game for at least five years and other than being really big for no reason, it’s pretty empty for that amount of time and the game is only a 7 out of 10 at best the way it is. Worst dungeons of ANY Zelda game, weakest story of any Zelda game. Worst fighting system of any 3D Zelda game. Like he said most of this should have been in game. Hard mode? You fanboys are the cancer of Nintendo. Fuck your loser, don’t think I forgot about our last fight dipshitimous.

      1. LOL some Nintendo fanboy got ~~TRIGGERED~~! Shut up or I will tell your mom that you’re not doing your homework and spending all day in the internet writing in all caps (and with two fingers, probably)!

    2. Of course we’re defensive, YOU JUST ARE TOO DUMB AND ARROGANT TOO SEE THAT THE GAME WAS GOLD AGES AGO, AND STILL COMPLAINING IT’S INCOMPLETE! TROLLING FREAKS LIKE YOU SHOULD GO DIE IN A DITCH, YOU STUPID FREAK!

    3. And by the way, YOU’RE STILL GONNA COMPLAIN ABOUT DLC PACK 2 HUH?!? WELL, TO GO AHEAD, SHUT UP! YOU JUST HATE DLC! ADMIT IT, DLC HATING PUNK!

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

Typical fanboy mentality. It’s bad when your favorite doesn’t do it but when they do do it, it’s the BEST THING EVAAAAA!!! lol

  13. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

So will silver enemies end up being gold monsters that make Calamity Ganon even more of a little bitch than what one single Lynel already does to the so called “big bad” of Breath of the Wild? You’d think being called a calamity would mean THE most powerful enemy in the entire game. Maybe I should pretend Calamity Ganon is just the Lynels’ little bitch taking away the attention from themselves. lol *shrug*

Anyway, I’d love to have Majora’s Mask now instead of 3-4 months from now. Not that I’d be able to pair it up with Fierce Deity Link’s armor since Majora’s Mask Link amiibo is already fucking sold out at Best Buy who has exclusivity of it! The closest town that has a fucking Best Buy is nearly 2 fucking hours away! I should have known the stock would be total shit for him when TP Link sold out in less than an hour at GameStop! Least I’ll have a second chance with him since I got 2 GameStops within a 15-30 minute drive & the GameStop closest was good enough to have 2 Guardian amiibo when I dropped by there to get my Switch on day 1 of release! (I still regret not getting the Guardian when I had the chance. Sucks when you have a chance to get something but don’t get it because you weren’t interested in it at all at the time only to become interested days later & going back to finding them gone.)

  14. DarthChris and Fanboy destroyer, you’re both a wet hot pile of garbage. And to clarify, I teach coding classes so dont tell me I dont know shit. Theres no denying the DLC wont be worth 20 bucks. But its a triple a title and thats the going rate for dlc. Why should Nintendo devalue their premium content just because their competitors charge an unreasonable price for their own? It doesnt make sense to charge 60 bucks for the main game and then have 2 or 5 dollar dlc. And dont give me this “it should be free” bs because as soon as anyone says that, then the argument becomes “it should have been in the main game!” If your going to sell your game for 60 bucks, 20 bucks isnt unreasonable for an additional quest and new interface options. Hard mode, the cave of trials, and a switch t shirt are fillers. Your paying 20 bucks for an original story and new side quests. And you assholes would do it for Call of Duty without a goddamn peep out of either of you, so SHUT THE FUCK UP.

  15. I’ll get it only because I have the game still sealed and I have funds in my account with nothing to use it on.
Nothing new to Zelda except for the following:

Path- use your brain instead or fast travel points like I did in X.

    Medallion- only for saving time.

Equipment- doesn’t take that long to put on a new dress.
