Hidden within the latest press release for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild downloadable content comes news that there is an update for the game which is now live. The update enables users to enjoy the game in multiple languages so you can now have Japanese voice acting if you are not entirely satisfied with the English voice acting.
Starting today, players will be able to experience the game in one of nine audio languages [Japanese, English, French (France), French (Canada), German, Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Latin America), Italian and Russian], with a different language used for on-screen text by downloading a free software update. To enable this feature in the Wii U version of the game, players will need to download a Voice Pack from Nintendo eShop.

Holy shit, yes. So glad to hear this. Really didn’t like the German voice acting, especially Zelda’s voice. Pretty happy I’ll be able to enjoy the Japanese voices now.
I think it’s something that should have been in the game from the get-go, but a bit late most certainly is better than never.

That one was pretty bad, if only for the choice of voice actor. Gorons should have very deep voices, not… that.

I actually did changed the audio to Latin Spanish. I honestly like that dub better.

Though I I feel justified by pointing out the fact that the Zelda games should either have no voice acting or at the very least use the made up language from recent Zelda games, like Fi and Midna use, Japanese audio is the more convincing voice acting in BotW and listening to the Gorons English dub in BotW proves my point.
What’s the point of listening to languages you can’t understand? I find that so weird. I mean, who wants to just read on-screen text while hearing some crazy foreign voice?
Tell that to the anime kids. They want “authentic” experience.
Honestly, I think that Japanese is really good at portraying mellow-dramatic situations in a more substantial way… If that makes sense. Sometimes the English voice tracks can sound a little tacky in more dramatic scenes, just because Japanese and English are structured very differently. Maybe it’s my own opinion, or because my dad is half Japanese and I’m familiar with the language, but O can understand why it wouldn’t make sense to some people if they have no interest in the Japanese audio.
I’m definately not saying Japanese is always better than English, though. There are a ton of games out there with better English dubs :p
Because it also enables you to learn another language, my native language is spanish, but I always watch movies and play videogames in the original language they were made. It allowed me to learn english and it could also help me learn another language.
Because listening to American voice actors in a game made by Japanese developers in a medieval European and Japanese setting is pretty cringey to me. I wish they had at least gone with British voices for English.
I’m assuming you’re English? Do you ever watch foreign movies, and if so, do you watch them dubbed? Of course, a game is a bit different, the lip sync isn’t as important here. But for movies, I cannot see why you’d want to see it all dubbed over. And reading is not very hard.
No. I never watch foreign movies, or movies with subtitles etc. I get incredibly annoyed having to read text on screen when watching a movie. Which is what I hated about the Passion Of The Christ. Though I did watch Apocalypto, and liked it. But it was hard getting into because of having to read everything.
Basically, if you’re going to play a game with foreign language and English subtitles, there was no point in having voice acting in the first place. I mean, if you’re still gonna have to read everything. Then it’s just like all past Zelda games.
Wow, not sure what to say. Reading is not hard, and most movies are far more enjoyable in their original language, so they’ll be far more enjoyable with subs instead of being dubbed.

It’s for those who don’t like the fact that the people of Hyrule suddenly sound like they’re from Westminster, London UK (to be fair that would suggest that the fake English accents actually sounded convincing, which they don’t).
I’m so happy that by setting my WiiU to “surround sound” I can block most of the voice acting and go back to the quiet text that I loved so much in the previous games. I don’t consider reading to remove “immersion”. It heightens it in my opinion by allowing you to interpret tone and delivery in your own way.
At least with Japanese voices they still sound kinda “other-wordly” because I don’t know what they’re saying. Regardless of the fact that I don’t think earth languages fit Hyrule, the English dub was still bad imo. Ranged from barely tolerable to totally cringey.
Having said that, I’m just one opinion. People begged for voice-acting and they got it so I don’t think it’s a bad thing overall. Just a bad thing for me, personally.
Curious if this was the result of all the petitions that went up around release, or if it was simply meant to be included from the start but they hadn’t fully optimized it yet.
Ah well, it’s here now and that’s what matters. Based superior japanese voice acting wins again.

Pretty sure it was meant to be. In an interview, … I forget which one of them said it, but Nintendo said they hoped that people would switch the languages to enjoy the voice acting in all the various languages they recorded for the game. – At the time, I was disappointed that you couldn’t actually do what they suggested, but now we can, which I’m actually very happy about. I like the voice acting, and I enjoy hearing the other languages. This was something they intended for us to do in the beginning though, to answer your question. :)

I’m glad they did this. Now I can play the game again later in Japanese after I’m done playing it in English. Unlike some other nuts, I actually enjoy the English dub of some Japanese products while hating the English dub of a few others. *thinks about how much he utterly hates the English dub for Naruto & prefers Japanese with English subs instead* Speaking of, I should watch the first episode of Attack on Titan in English then in Japanese to see if I want to pull a Naruto & watch the entire show in Japanese instead of my native language before I start watching my recordings of Season 2 of Attack on Titan I got saved on my satellite box.
