NBA Playgrounds File Size Is Bigger Than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

As we reported yesterday, NBA Playgrounds for the Nintendo Switch finally has a firm release date. The arcade-style basketball title will hit Nintendo’s latest system on May 9th. What’s interesting is the file size of the game which is actually bigger than Nintendo’s very own Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. NBA Playgrounds will take up 7.4GB of system memory when it launches on the Nintendo Switch eShop on May 9th.

  1. I saw this just today when I was looking the game on the eshop. That will get me closer into buying an sd card, cause I am definitely getting this game.

  2. For some reason, third parties do a horrible job of optimizing their games for size on Nintendo hardware. Nintendo’s games are consistently a fraction of the size of third parties.

    1. When a game is targeted for multiplatform it’s bound to have less optimisation in the file size and tbh as long as the the game is optimised to play good this means Jack. And no it’s not just Nintendo platform, it’s every other platforms as well. It’s a third party thing, and as long as it’s optimised to play well for the system i Wouldn’t bother.

  3. Wow, definitely skipping this then. It’s unfortunate, don’t want games to clog internal memory, nor I want to buy external memory if not needed.

    1. If you want to play a game like NBA Playgrounds and it’s only at the eShop, you must buy a Micro SD XC Memory Card. It’s what you do. If you want to save 15% or more on car insurance, you switch to GEICO. It’s what you do.

      1. NBA Playgrounds isn’t worthed an SD card, that’s it. :)
        I don’t consider digital games over 5 GB, I buy big games in cartridge format only.
        I just advice developers to stay strict with download size because I’m certain that many will do like that and lose money. I know of one person that didn’t bought Just Dance 2017 for download size.

    2. If you’re planning to get through your switch days without atleast a 128GB card be ready to miss out on a lot of games, good ones because a lot of games from big third parties are gonna be digital only even if other platforms do have physical versions of the same game and I’m not talking smaller titles and its only gonna get bigger in size at some point. And third parties would not put extra effort just for Nintendo consoles when every other platforms are getting the same treatment.

      1. Skipping those, I’m not a fan of indies anyway, I will buy those only if cheap and little in size.
        They will have their market, just will be smaller without us. Fast RMX is fine, Shovel Knight, WonderBoy, etc. too.
        This game just want to be out of our consoles.
        Yooka-Laylee it’s still complex but weight just 3GB.
        If any title will be ‘incredible’ eventually I’ll do an exception. This isn’t the case, and there are so many games to choose from that’s a no regret.

      2. You’re not a fan of Indies but u like Indies? And then you went on to give an example of Yooka laylee a game that was released unpolished and buggy on core gameplay level. The thing i get from what you’re saying is you’re not interested in this game particularly but don’t need to nitpick a reason to justify yourself specially the size of the game now if the game was unpolished gameplay wise i would consider, but the size of the game. Deal with it, no third party will put effort in that except for few for whatever reason. Specially when most 3rd party games are probably gonna end up selling the least on Switch. And if you’re only a Nintendo console guy coming from Wii u there weren’t many games to choose from. At all. And if you meant with switch, good games are racking up. Great games indeed. Guess what most of which are all Indies. Now if you had different platforms to choose from its a different story but also thinking of it if u had different platforms you would already know that third party games are not size optimised so idk but anyways it’s your decisions to make. Happy gaming

  4. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

    This is only gonna get worse as the Switch gets more & more 3rd party games. I just have to hope that not too many games come to the Switch that I want to have digitally. If any do come, hopefully they won’t be exclusive so I can buy them on my PS4 instead.
