Donkey Kong & Pokemon Red/Green Have Been Inducted Into The World Video Game Hall Of Fame

The World Video Game Hall of Fame‘s class of 2017 has been announced today, and for the third year in a row, Nintendo titles will be among the inductees. The 1981 arcade hit Donkey Kong and 1996 releases of Pokemon Red and Green on Game Boy were among this year’s inductees. It joins Nintendo titles such as Super Mario Bros and The Legend Of Zelda, which were inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Wii Sports, which was nominated this year, did not make it. Donkey Kong and Pokemon Red/Green were not alone, however. Street Fighter II and Halo: Combat Evolved were also inducted this year.

    1. How does it not deserve it? Pokemon is now a massive franchise that is part of a huge chunk of gamers’ lives. Not only is Pokemon Red and Green wildly more successful than Final Fantasy VII, it’s also better known, and more ingrained into pop culture. Final Fantasy VII is a beautiful game, but I do not believe for a second that the game is anywhere near as well known and successful, overall, as the original Pokemon games.

      1. No doubt, a huge part of the population knows what a Pikachu is, but I’ve never heard a single mention of the Final Fantasy franchise from anyone who wasn’t a gamer at one point in their lives. To even think Final Fantasy deserves more recognition is silly.

      2. After thinking about it I was probably wrong about FFVII being nominated, but I still don’t think Pokemon should be nominated. I mean, look at all these games. look at what they did. Donkey Kong revolutionized the Arcade, Street Fighter 2 changed fighting games forever, Zelda and Mario are…well, Zelda and Mario, and Halo put one of the biggest gaming companies to date ion the map. Pokemon is great, sure, but it didn’t have nearly as much impact on gaming as a whole.

        (BTW this is g. 2 accounts = my 2 devices changing accounts at will.)

    2. Pokemon Red/Blue was a very big deal when it was released. It did start a HUGE franchise (that Nintendo almost didn’t want to be part of). It should be recognized just for the impact it has had to the gaming industry.

    3. What makes Pokemon deserving of induction is that its impact is not just restricted to gaming. It’s had an impact on the entire world.It’s a major cultural phenomenon. It has achieved a status that very few video games have. Few people in the world are completely unfamiliar with Pokemon. Look at Pokemon Go. It caused a world-wide craze that no other video game franchise could have. It got to the point where it was featured in national news stories and actually caused real world problems. Very few video game series have had such an impact on society; and it all started with Red and Green.

    4. Are you nuts? What do you think had a bigger impact on todays society: Pokémon or Final Fantasy? Have you ever heard of a Final Fantasy phenomenon? Every child plays and speaks about Final Fantasy? Has FF plushies? Plays FF card games and watches FF on TV? Sleeps in a bed with a FF blanket and listens to the FF song on CD? Goes to the cinema with its parents every year and watches the new FF movie?

    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

      ESPECIALLY Donkey Kong.

  1. Interesting. I think Wii Sports should be inducted at some point in the future. It was one of the few games in the industry which single-handedly revolutionized gaming. I can see why it was left out this time, though. It needs to build up its legacy a bit more through the passage of time.

  2. I play a lot of games and own most every console from the 6th generation to now plus several different handhelds I’m glad to see Nintendo recognized since, in my opinion, they have some of the most timeless games. That’s not to say they’re the only great games but I think they have by far the most high quality games of any console. This is even more amazing considering that they have been mostly 3rd place when it comes to console sales (with the exception of the Wii).

    However, they’re best work in the Arcade industry, IMHO, began and ended with the Mario games. I’m glad they changed their focus to home consoles otherwise they would have gone the way of companies like Midway and Williams.

    Took them long enough to induct Donkey Kong. If not for that game, video games possibly could have died with the video game crash that Atari caused back in the early 80s. If not died, it would have taken another decade or more to start back up & we probably wouldn’t have what we have today.
