Emma Watson Says She Prefers “Early Sonic, Late Mario” In The Circle

In the new movie The Circle, there’s a random scene in which Emma Watson’s character is asked whether she prefers Mario or Sonic. She replies by simply saying, “early Sonic, late Mario.” You can see it play out in the clip below. Which of the two series do you prefer? If you ask me, I’d have to go with late Mario when taking all of the core games into account – but the earlier entries in both franchises are platforming classics in their own rights.

  1. I used to like Sonic the Hedgehog as a kid, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that they weren’t all that great. For a platformer, there’s very little platforming and I feel like they tried to mask what they knew to be mediocre gameplay by allowing you to go fast. However the games do have somewhat engaging boss fights; an anrea that early Mario games didn’t shine at and the music is great, there’s no denying that. So my answer will always be Mario; old or new, 2D or 3D.

    1. I can’t say I’m particularly convinced you ever did revisit the older Sonic games, because what you describe sounds nothing like them to me. The Mega Drive trilogy are packed with platforming – in fact there are only limited times that the game will allow you to go fast without you showing significant skill and knowledge of the levels to back up your pace. What you’ve described sounds far more like the ho-hum hold-right-to-win gameplay of Sonic Rush, which while I think “mediocre” might be harsh, “nothing special” is certainly fair.

      1. I think my problem with Sonic, at least the 2D gameplay, is that it seems to want to be both a platformer and a speed-runner; and it just doesn’t work. Platformers require slower, more deliberate movements, which kind of defeats the purpose of a supersonic hedgehog. Like you said, there are parts of the original trilogy that allow you to go fast; but, unless you know the level (and the levels do require quite a bit of trial and error to learn), you’ll soon hit a wall and kill the pace. That’s not a good feeling. It would be like playing a high-speed racer and coming to a dead stop.

        On the other hand, like you mentioned, simply having a fast-paced runner isn’t fun if it requires no skill (i.e. Sonic Rush)

        What I don’t quite understand is why the Sonic Team hasn’t ever been able to, or at least doesn’t seem to have been able to, develop a high-speed, precise, skill-required Sonic game. It’s been successfully done before with other games: Star Wars Ep. 1 Racer, F-Zero, Burnout Revenge, even Mario Kart to a lesser degree. These games allow you to dodge obstacles and pull off skillful maneuvers at blazing speeds, and there’s no feeling quite like it when you successfully do so. I realize that all these examples are racing games, but there must be some way to bring the feeling of a high-speed racing game to Sonic.

      2. Oh I’ve definitely gone back and replayed them, they just don’t capture me like they did back then. I don’t hate the games, I have some residual nostalgia for them and find them to be serviceable games in their own right, I guess my tastes have just changed. As far as Sonic Rush is concerned I can’t comment as I’ve never played it.

  2. The circle was weirdly bad. So many good actors on such an unstable storyline.

    It’s like it was trying to comment on how stupidly connected our world is becoming, how little privacy we have and how much privacy owners of tech companies still have, and yet at the same time was trying to agree with it being completely fine.

  3. How come when we make statements we don’t make the news? I always thought Sonic sucked. Mario has always been and will always be better than Sonic.

    More after these messages.

    1. Seems the definition of “Clickbait” eludes you. Did Alba post a cleavage shot of Emma Watson? No.
      Did he claim something fantastic that was taken out of context? No.

      At worst, it’s a filler article. And there’s not a damn thing wrong with that. I’d never read this before, and Emma is in the news due to her new movie. It’s smart to post this article, and NOT “Clickbait.”

      Unless you are going by the strict definition that it was written to draw people to a website. Which is rediculous as all news sources write for that very reason. This is a news blog, not a charity organization.

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

          lol I’d have preferred that, too, to be honest.

  4. While I don’t typically agree with Arin Hanson, I very much agree with his view on Sonic. The 2D games only make sense as speedrunning material. The games rely on taking very specific paths that you have to memorize and learn the timing of. You constantly run into walls or enemies that you can’t possibly see coming, unless you go at a snail’s pace, defeating the entire purpose of the game. The speed is an obstacle until you manage to memorize the entire layout and timing of the level. I think Sonic was a poorly designed concept that only gained so much popularity because of the character design, hardware and marketing. The 3D games are a big step up, conceptually, but I was never a fan of those either.

    Mario is fun, though. Had a much more elegant basic design to it, which still holds up today. The 3D ones are especially great.

    Also, fuck Emma Watson.

  5. Not to be a wet blanket here, but I do not give a toss about which games Emma thinks are the best.
    Besides. She might actually think that way, or she COULD be parroting popular opinion that I hear pretty much everywhere. (Just saying.)

    1. What? It’s a Sunday. Sunday is a slow news day for almost every site in existence and the Switch is getting worthwhile exclusive titles faster than the PS4 did.

    1. 1.- She’s an unimportant, out-of-touch rich bitch who has the intellectual authority of a rock.
      2.- She’s clearly talking about stuff like Galaxy or 3D World.

    1. that’s exactly what this is. It was what her character said, not her. Somehow I doubt she has any developed opinions of videogames.

  6. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

    So much hate for Emma Watson. *shrug* It’s just a line from a movie so whatever. Of course, I have to partly agree with her. Sonic has not fared well in the 3D model age of gaming while Mario has simply improved greatly. (Still love the hell out of Super Mario World, though!)

      partly agree with her character in the movie.*

  7. Click bait title as it’s not Emma saying it, but rather a line in the movie.

    And I’m the opposite. Early Mario, late Sonic as characters. Mario has gotten long in the tooth and hasn’t developed, Sonic has throughout the same period (for better or worse is arguable).
