US: Nielsen Study Finds Most Non-Gamers Aren’t Aware Of The Nintendo Switch

A new report produced by Nielsen and published by Polygon has revealed that a number of non-gamers aren’t really aware of the Nintendo Switch. By contrast they are more familiar with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, both of these consoles have been on the market for a number of years, so it is not entirely surprising. It should also be noted that the vast majority of non-gamers surveyed weren’t really aware of the PlayStation 4 Pro or the upcoming Xbox Scorpio. The data for the “Games 360” report is conducted during the first quarter of each year which ends March 31st. Polygon says the results were from over 2,000 online surveys.

  1. It’s maybe a bit troublesome that it’s only 7% for the Switch. But I’m not surprised that it’s lower than PS4 or Xbox One. First, PS4 and XBox One advertise like crazy during sporting events and other shows aimed at older audiences. Nintendo tends to advertise more in the under 13 demographic. Secondly, the PlayStation and XBox are established brands that just have a new number after them; the Switch is entirely new, so it’s not surprising that it’s lower.

  2. B-But they told me that the Switch was only doing well because of the casuals, and not that said casuals are all over the PS4 instead 😱

    1. Casuals don’t really bother with both, they know about the PS4 due to the fact that it’s been around since 2013.
      Nintendo Switch was just released back in March but it still more known than the Xbox Scorpio if you noticed.

    2. Most Casuals are not going to buy the switch. This is not going to be a “Wii” situation as the Switch will eventually hit a “Saturation-point” where gamers that have moderate love for Nintendo will all have the switch, then sales will begin to drop. – That’s my theory, and we’ll see how it holds up. Now… if Nintendo manages a game like Wii Sports… or a serious mainline Pokémon game, they could get a huge surge as the 3DS handheld gamers convert over, but that’s just cannibalizing current users from one Nintendo Install base to another Nintendo install base. The hype that results will definitely bring in some new people also, but the majority will be existing Nintendo consumers. – That may be happening now as we’ve seen 3DS sales slow.

      Switch will be a Success for Nintendo regardless, baring them doing something really stupid, which is still not out of the question. However, it’s not going to pull in the casual $$$. I’m guessing Gamecube sales figures by the time it’s all said and done.

      1. GameCube? Really? I’m expecting 3DS/GBA level at minimum.

        Zelda is the game that’s moving systems right now.

      2. Gamecube level sales? If you really expect the Switch to do less than 25 million, then honestly you aren’t paying enough attention to historical data and current trends. This is assuming that Nintendo doesn’t release a successor to the 3DS, which I believe would fall under what you call “something really stupid”; but to think that the Switch will only sell around 25 mil after the 3DS has sold over 65 mil is a ridiculous thought.

        1. I thought Gamecube sold 35 million. I may have been thinking of the N64.
          Also, I did mention the caviat that if Nintendo-developed do cannibalized it’s handheld gaming install base, Switch sales could be much higher, although Nintendo’s total install base will be just above flat. Guess we’ll see!

  3. Notice how they barely know that the Xbox Scorpio is a thing and the Switch is still more known than it XD
    This is a bit a clickbait article as the Switch is pretty new hardware and Nintendo has lost a lot of people so non-gamers will forget about them and barely know anything about the Switch.

    However, the fact that it’s more known than the Xbox Scorpio (More Powerful Hardware) is a good sign. We could see the Switch becoming just as known as the PS4 and Xbox One.

    1. Xbox fans barely know Scorpio is a thing. With few to no exclusives, and little hype around Scorpio, I’m not sure Microsoft wants to stay in the console business much longer.

        1. haha, well, I say that because I know xbox fans that don’t know what the point of scorpio is unless Microsoft has some games they haven’t told anyone about. So mostly I was talking from those I’ve discussed it with. I’m sure you’re right, there will be a Niche market for it. More so if it has GAMES. XD. If there’s one thing Switched proved, with the right game, you can sell anything.

      1. It’s not about exclusives, as Phil Spencer would put it.
        But do I sense Spencer becoming bitter? He was revered like a Jesus when he stepped in charge and everything was fun and games.
        But I guess I would be under a lot of stress if I had to run a sector that is hanging on a thread waiting for investors to cut it out.
        One day money pumping will end, and who everyone will blame? Phil Spencer.

        1. Yes, you must influence the public education system so that school students will accept Nintendo into their lives.

  4. “Polygon says the results were from over 2,000 online surveys”

    Umm…aren’t online surveys usually flawed and riddled with lazy dishonest answers?

    1. And everyone has heard of Playstation and Xbox.
      They will check in PS4 even if the last time they saw “one” was a Playstation 2 console as their DVD player.

      1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

        You used the word right but I’ll post this here any-damn-way!

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

          You’re welcome. lol

          It’s hard for me not to notice since The Princess Bride is one of my most favorite movies. Along with a number of other 80s movie gems. Like Legend or Labyrinth. (Not looking forward to the Labyrinth sequel I heard about awhile back, though.)

              Legend has Tom Cruise as the hero who is apparently a forest boy with Tim Curry as the villain known as Darkness. As his name implies, he can’t go out into the sunlight as it’ll kill his physical body & he wants to cover the universe in darkness like it was before the Light of Creation came to be. To do this, he has to kill 2 unicorns which is apparently the source of the Light. Anyway, it’s honestly one of those movies you have to watch if you love Tim Curry as a villain.

                  Just look up Legend 1985 on google.

                      Oh & I almost forgot. The movie has two different versions: one with a more rock & roll soundtrack & one with a more fantasy based soundtrack. I highly suggest the fantasy based one which is done by Tangerine Dream.

                        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                          Yes, actually. The rock & roll score one was released to theaters in the UK & the Tangerine Dream score was released in the United States. Besides the score, the difference between them is one is slightly longer. The rock & roll score is the longer one & both have different endings. While I suggest the Tangerine Dream score one first, I actually recommend watching both versions, too. Of course, the only real difference would be the endings but the difference in musical scores might be enough to get you through both versions. The Ultimate Edition should have both versions. Sadly, that’s the only way I know of to be able to see both versions. The Tangerine Dream score will be the US Theatrical Version (simply called the Theatrical Version on the BluRay itself.)

                          1. That’s very intriguing. I wonder what made them do the same movie but with different music/length/ending. Perhaps they felt different nations would appreciate different things?

                            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                              I think the studio didn’t think Americans would like a classical score for such a movie so they wanted a more rock & roll score. The irony is Tangerine Dream is more new age than they are rock & roll. lol Just listen for yourself. The video is the score by itself.

                              They apparently got the movie but you have to pay a rental fee of around 3 bucks. It says theatrical version but I’m not sure if it’s the US theatrical version or the UK theatrical version.

                              1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                To me, the difference in musical scores makes them feel like different movies in spite of having roughly the same exact scenes, minus the endings of course.

                                1. I could see that. Like how BOTW has barely any music. I feel the experience would be totally different if they had put that Zelda music charm into it and make it feel almost like a different game.

                                  1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                    Never underestimate the power of music. It could literally make or break a movie or video game.

                                    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                      I was wrong about one thing. The Tangerine Dream score is supposed to be the rock & roll soundtrack, not the UK version’s score. XD Anyway, the UK/International film score is by Jerry Goldsmith & is supposed to be more of a classical score.

                                2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

                                  Speaking of, while I love Tim Curry as Pennywise, I can’t wait for the remake of Stephen King’s It. As a callback to the original movies, I hope they get John Ritter’s son Jason to play a character in the remakes at some point since John himself is no longer with us & can’t do it.

                                    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                      I heard they intend to follow the book more closely than the original movies did. Which means they’ll most likely strongly allude to that one scene in the book where they sealed their pact to come face Pennywise again if It ever resurfaced by the girl sleeping with all of the boys. xD (Yeah, that’s an actual thing in the original book by Stephen King if you weren’t aware of it already.)

                                      Speaking of movies based on Stephen King books, I also can’t wait for the first movie in The Dark Tower series. I hope they are following the books to a t as I’d love to see Roland & his companions stumble into worlds like The Stand, Children of the Corn, & Salem. Maybe they’ll use the Dark Tower movies as a kickoff point for a connected cinematic Stephen King universe.

                                      1. I didn’t read the book, but I heard it (It) haha was really good. I didn’t know the girl slept with all the guys. Damn, that’s quite a pact haha. My friend also can’t wait to see that Dark Tower movie. I actually have only seen Stephen King movies. Never read any of his books. And haven’t seen too many. Only two I can think of off the top of my head are It and the Langoliers (not sure on spelling). I am pretty sure I’ve seen at least one or two other movies by him, but can’t think of them.

                                        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                          I haven’t read any of the books either, to be honest. I just did some online surfing to find some of this stuff out. Oh & you spelled the Langoliers right.

                                          As for the movies, I’ve only seen maybe 5 of them: The Stand, The Green Mile (not King’s usual genre,) The Shawshank Redemption (another one not of King’s usual genre,) It (the original obviously since the remake isn’t out yet lol,) The Langoliers, bits & pieces of The Shining with Jack Nicholson & bits & pieces of it’s mini-series remake from the late 90s, The Night Flier with the late Miguel Ferrer who you might know from the original Robocop movie, The Dead Zone with Christopher Walken, Pet Sematary (not counting the sequel obviously), 1408, The Mist, Maximum Overdrive with Emilio Estevez (movie based on the short story Trucks,) Sleepwalkers, Carrie (the remake with Chloë Grace Moretz,) bits & pieces of the original Carrie, Firestarter (with the very hot Drew Barrymore when she was a wee little tot,) bits & pieces of Creepshow which was King’s screenwriting debut, Cat’s Eye (one of my favorites which also has Drew Barrymore and James Woods is actually in it, too,) Cujo, Sometimes They Come Back, Tales From The Darkside The Movie (it had a few of King’s stories in it,) The Lawnmower Man, The Running Man (with Arnie which is loosely based on a King novel,) most of Desperation, & Graveyard Shift.

                                          Wow. That’s a lot more than 5! xD There’s been quite a number of movies based on King’s works or at least movies written by him.

                                          1. I’ve seen Shawshank. Didn’t know it was him until last year, and forgot until you just mentioned it. Saw parts of Green Mile. I have seen The Shining, but I always think Stanley Kubrick, so forgot that was King. Saw one of the Carrie movies but don’t know which one. Saw 1408. Is Sleepwalkers the one where cats kill the monsters? The monsters being a woman and her son that change into weird creatures. If so I’ve seen it. Saw the Mist. I’ve seen more than I thought as well haha.

                                            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                              Yeah, it was adapted from one of King’s novella’s. Green Mile is a pretty good, and very sad near the end, movie. One of Tom Hanks & Michael Clarke Duncan’s best movie roles. The Shining, King’s story, was based on an experience he had at a hotel once. (I’m assuming 1408 is another based on that experience.)

                                              Yeah, that’s Sleepwalkers. But it was only the mother the cats ended up killing since the other main female character in the movie killed the son a couple of minutes before the mother died. (Sleepwalkers is another one of those King movies that he wrote the story for as there was nothing preceding it.)

                                              1. I saw the minutes before the executed Michael Clarke Duncan’s character. That’s about it. He was a good actor. What a shame he passed away. To be honest, I was disappointed with The Shining. I heard it was so crazy and stuff, so I bought it a few years ago. Only one person died, and it was the bad guy! I was like, what kind of horror movie has no victims?! Ok, maybe I have a little bloodlust when it comes to movies haha. I really liked 1408 though. Ok, so I did see Sleepwalkers. But it was a long time ago haha. I also saw Stand By Me, which I had to Google to make sure it was him. Oh, and as I’m looking now, I see The Secret Window. Saw it, didn’t know it was him. Also saw Dreamcatcher, again didn’t know it was him. And Children of the Corn. I’ve seen a lot more King movies than I thought.

                                                1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                                  I honestly liked Duncan as Fisk in the Daredevil movie with Affleck. Probably one of the few things that made that movie bearable. The Shining honestly makes me wish Jack Nicholson had done more horror movies. The mini-series of The Shining does have a second person die, if I remember correctly. With such a limited cast, I can understand a horror movie like that not having many deaths, though.

                                                  1. I liked Colin Farrell as Bullseye. I haven’t seen it since it came out though. Not really much else about that movie that was good haha. Jack can do any movie and I’ll watch. He’s one of the all-time greats. And I guess you’re right. There was hardly any people. And back then there was almost no killing of children in movies, so that wasn’t happening. And they can’t kill a mom and leave the kid with no parent, so that wasn’t happening. So no much they could have done with it.

                                                    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                                      Yeah, Farrell was pretty good, too. Another good thing about the movie was the music.

                                                        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                                          Two of Evanescence’s biggest songs at the time were in the movie. You forgot Bring Me To Life. (I enjoyed the music playing during the end credits.)

                                                            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                                              It’s the song they play when Elektra is doing her little training segment with the sais. (More like her playing segment since Bullseye fucked her up with little to no effort. lol)

                                                              1. I remember the segment. And now that you place the two together, I am imagining it playing while she does that. Speaking of Elektra, WOW that was another horrible movie haha.

                                                              2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                                                Oh & they were actually werecats in Sleepwalkers.

                                                                  1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                                                    Werecats actually precede Sleepwalkers. The earliest talk of them I saw (not sure if it’s further back in time than this since I didn’t read any further on the subject) was in the early 1700s.

                                                                    1. So there’s an actual lore to these things? Hmm. Didn’t think that movie would have much of a following. I’m guessing the book had more fans then.

                                                      1. To summarize this story: People who don’t keep up with video game news aren’t on the cutting edge.

                                                        So, basically how it’s always been.

                                                      2. Where I live, I find that hard to believe.

                                                        I see Nintendo Switch ad posters whenever I board the subway. And sometimes I’m playing my Nintendo Switch beside them. XD

                                                      3. I wonder what kind of people participate in an online survey.

                                                        With all the Switch ads in movie theaters and the Super Bowl, how can that many people not know about the Switch?

                                                      5. This is stupid. Of course a non gamer probably won’t know about the Switch. And I can see why the Playstation brand is more recognizable. All I ever see is Playstation games everywhere I go (mainly PS2). Like when I go to yard sales and thrift stores, I always see PS2 and PS2 (and Xbox) games. But rarely find Nintendo games. Either that’s because there’s a lot more Playstation games out there, or people just don’t want to get rid of their Nintendo games.

                                                        Even on TV, you hear about Playstation and Xbox much more than Nintendo. It’s a twisted world.

                                                          1. Ban me? You told me to kill myself over a piece of plastic. I think you’re a f’ing idiot but I wouldnt tell you to kill yourself. Im surprised you havent been banned. You take things too far and need help.

                                                          2. I dont care if you were having an off day. You dont say bs like that regardless. No matter how pissed off I am I wouldnt tell someone to kill themselves over a video game company. That shit is just as bad as being racist.

                                                        1. My brother’s a diehard Pokemon fan and even he never watches Nintendo directs because he gets everything that’s relevant to him from Serebii and his friends.

                                                          I’m sure he would enjoy more Nintendo games than just Pokemon if he was aware of them, but he’s not aware because he doesn’t tune into Nintendo directs, he doesn’t load up the eShop every day to see if there’s something new.
                                                          He doesn’t do those things because he isn’t a Nintendo fan, he’s a consumer Nintendo can’t be stuffed promoting to.

                                                          Same goes for Blizzard, he didn’t even know about Overwatch until I bought it for his birthday because he never watches twitch which is the only place I’ve seen it advertised. He already played Starcraft, Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3, but he’s not a video game enthusiast who follows video game news. He just takes what he hears about and only looks up things related to what he’s already into.

                                                          This is a guy who hosts LAN parties at his place and probably hasn’t heard of Super Mario Odyssey.

                                                      6. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

                                                        Only 2000 surveys! Quick! Call Nintendo & tell them the Switch is doooomed! DOOOOOOOOOMED, I SAY!!!!
