ARMS On Nintendo Switch Will “Hurt Your Arms”

Caty McCarthy over at USgamer recently had the opportunity to go hands-on with the upcoming Nintendo Switch exclusive ARMS. After spending some time with the game for the first time, McCarthy says the motion controls hurt her actual arms and left her feeling uncomfortable. Therefore, she wrote a piece titled “Nintendo’s Arms Will Hurt Your Arms.” You can read some excerpts from it below:

“I walked up the tallest hill of my stupid life to reach Nintendo’s Arms event, where I would later punch the air for a few hours. My legs were sore; I could feel blisters forming at my ankles. I wished I wasn’t so cheap and just ordered a Lyft instead of making the twenty minute trek up the steepest hills San Francisco has to offer. But hours later, when I left the event, it wasn’t my legs that hurt anymore: but my literal arms. It all felt like a sick twist of fate.

“But alas, there’s something inherently off about Arms. It’s likely the motion control of the JoyCons, which don’t feel precise enough a fair amount of the time. I’d launch my arms forward in an effort to grab and slam dunk an opponent in Hoops mode (where the goal is dunking your opponents into a hoop rather than hitting them), only for each glove to punch forward one after the other. During my time with the game, I wondered if this was an issue that could be simply remedied with the Pro controller, a gamepad with more precision and without the flimsy unpredictability of the Switch’s motion controls.”

      ||You will both kneel and control yourselves or else the hammer will fall down again…||

  1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

For this poor little thing, least she can turn off the motion controls. It is an option, after all, since Ninty did say motion controls are not required to play the game.

I can’t help but think about that Anita chick for some reason, though. Oh & the person that cried “Too much water” & gave Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire a 7.5. lol

I also imagine she played the game while standing, too, if this was at an event where standing for long periods of time is a must when playing demos.

  2. “my legs and ankles hurt from walking, i should have ordered a lyft” “waahh, motion controls make my arms hurt!”

I don’t know, maybe try being a bit more active? if youre complaining about movement making your body hurt then maybe you should stop being a lazy asshole.

  3. im a cart pusher and if i played this game after an 8hr shift i would feel fine and being a cart pusher is not that easy. also she is a pansy because she can’t handle walking for more than 2 mins uphill, i could and i a fat guy, well if you use a fatness scale which are six i am the first level aka big.

    1. I know your pain, I usually work late nights and they expect me to completely clear the lot. If it’s been a busy day and the other baggers were lazy, sometimes I have to push 13 to 17 carts at a time. At least I eventually built up shoulder muscle and my arms don’t hurt anymore.

      1. History of cart pushing as well, especially during the Wii’s height, and yeah… I did experience some slight elbow pain after playing a lot of Wii Sports, but come on… what’s next, DDR makes you have to wear Velcro shoes so you do not fall? Doing any physical activity outside of your norm requires a period of adjustment. I will say this though, the fact that it was uncomfortable is the main take away for me. I do not like the feel of the joy con in general, so I can totally imagine that. Here’s hoping that once motion controls turned off that it’s still an enjoyable game.

        1. I’m not really a huge fan of the joycons for something like this, mostly because my hands are about twice the size of them making motion controlled gaming like this challenging. At least it’s better than trying to use it as normal controller like they advertise for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, my hands are so close together and I feel like I will drop it at any moment because I can’t hold it properly.

  4. Damn, at first I though this game was going to have extremely realistic HD rumble.
But now you’re telling me it’s just some whiny chick. Clickbait…

  5. How strange we get an article about this shortly after the ARMS Direct.

And nice to know there are so many fit exerciee nuts on this site. But yeah, this game IS like Wii Sports Boxing, especially all the twists and turns you’re expected to get good at. How else are you supposed to play it?

  6. Did this person also have Arms problems with Wii Sports Boxing? I think maybe you’re taking the wrong hobby if that’s the case.

I never felt hurt after a few rounds of WSB- fatigued, maybe, but not hurt or sore.

  7. To the people saying you can just turn the motion controls off, the game wade made because of it, Who tf is going to buy this game and not use motion controls. Stupid idiots.

        1. People who want a company to outright not exist because they don’t like another system aren’t real gamers. You should be glad the system is doing well because not only is it good for nintendo fans but it’s good for all gamers. If people like you were under the helm of business, gaming would be fucked.

  8. I just watched the review from GameXPlain about arms and they say the motion controls are fun and very precise.
Maybe the reporter should just get some exercise and getting good at coordinating her “real” arms.

  9. The first line reads “I walked up the tallest hill of my stupid life to reach Nintendo’s Arms event…” Bitch bitch bitch. YOU GOT TO PLAY A NEW NINTENDO GAME BEFORE EVERYBODY ELSE AND HANG OUT IN SAN FRANSISCO. you know McCarthy, there is a solution to that “stupid life” problem you have. fucking ingrate.

  10. A completely different impression to the one that Andre from GameXplain gave. There does seem to be a collection of people who have a blatant lack of understanding of how to use motion controls. At some point I think you’ve got to either make a proper effort to get better (i.e. stop blaming the controls, blame yourself) or just accept that motion control games aren’t for you, but that there are plenty of people who they are for. Instead we have to throw our toys out of the pram like this.

ARMS won’t work well with the Pro Controller. There are too many freedoms of movement that you’re simply not going to be able to map well to a controller. Don’t expect it to, and don’t blame it for not translating well to that format. It is making excellent use of the packaged Joycon.

    1. I think it can probly work better with the pro controller as most games do work better with an actual controller. I don’t see which movements your referring to that won’t map to a controller

  11. I played Wii Sports boxing for days and never ever felt sore…. I imagine this weakly casual chick was throwing her arms wildly and probably throwing punches before the arms had time to retract thus creating the sensation of wonky motion controls…. Well hope the motion controls are good enough cuz I feel it’ll be the best way to play Arms but it’s nice knowing that if it doesn’t work I can just disable them.

  12. Blisters from a 20 minute walk? The temperature is quite moderate in SF at the moment, so I think the author might need some better or older shoes (I’ve only just broken in a new pair of shoes myself, and I was getting blisters after five minutes in those before that).

Also, the author was playing the game “for hours”- and well she should to write a balanced preview of the game, which the full article is. It’s worth noting that many games will play the game for shorter sessions, and of course the aforementioned fact that any kind of boxing exercise/motion will tire your arms.

In the end though, the author mostly enjoyed the game and it’s made me more interested in getting Arms than I was before. I’m also someone who was baffled by the appeal of Splatoon until I actually played it. If Nintendo can pull off the same kind of immersion here, and (re)release Smash on the Switch, they’ll have a great stable of competitive online and local multiplayer options on the new console.
