Breath Of The Wild’s Director Also Discussed Open-World Being The Zelda Standard

It has only been an hour or so, as of this article’s writing, since we relayed to you the news that Aonuma feels that open-world/open-air Zelda games will be the standard of the games in the future. It turns out that Aonuma was not the only one that recently addressed this topic. Hidemaro Fujibayashi, the director for Breath Of The Wild, was asked a similar question in an interview with GameRant.

GameRant asked Fujibayashi if open-world will be the standard for Zelda games from here on out. Not only was the response longer than Aonuma’s, Fujibayashi was more reluctant to give a definitive answer. Fujibayashi said that “we can’t really say much at the moment but there are lots of things in this current game design we still want to explore. If, as a result of that exploration, we feel positive we can provide our audience with new experiences it’s possible this design could become the standard.”

  1. Yeah, he also said after Skyward Sword that he couldn’t imagine using a button to make Link swing a sword anymore and look how that turned out.

    1. I hope they re-release this game online. Or just do a ‘classics’ theme again like the Gamecube and Wii. There are a ton of wiiu games I’d like to see on Switch

    2. Hopefully if it is the standard I hope the story isn’t affected, botw’s story was lackluster because it was an open world plus and the start the game and go to the boss option.

Side characters had no story, delvelopment or character besides mipha and that was not much. Zelda herself was the only character that had charm and Zelda alone, I didn’t like the fact everyone else took the backseat including link.

I hope they don’t repeat this.

  2. I hope open world DOES become the standard of Zelda games. Breath Of The Wild was SUPER fun from beginning to end. I wish I could forget everything about the game so I can replay it and get excited all over. I’ve been feeling down in the dumps since I finished it. Been trying to play other games, but I’m having a hard time having fun because I miss Breath Of The Wild so much. That game really grew on me.

  3. I think be an Open-World game The Legend of Zelda it’s the right choice.

Breath of The Wild is so beatiful and fun exploring Hyrule since Ocarina of Time

  4. Another overrtated game with a Metacritic score from users Much less than “critics” who giving to nintendo games always an extra score because of nostalgia…and the Nintendo ghetto fans here believe this game will be game of the year? ahahahahah

        1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

          ||And you Sonyans have the same garbage every generation as well except you don’t even change the formula, not to mention thst you pay almost 3 times as much as Nintendo warriors will ever do, crawl back to your Sonyan cave or the hammer falls soon as well as on any new account you make…||

  5. I’m all for it and BOTW is an amazing game but I’d expect the next open world Zelda to be way less barren. Theres just not enough going on in that gigantic world.

As a first effort though it’s an easy 10/10 A+. The next game just needs to be more.

  6. Just imagine how great this game would be or future Zelda’s if Nintendo actually makes a powerfull console like they used too back in the days. Lord of the Rings would not be as great if they made all the orcs and buildings and such CGI instead of actuall armor buildings and creatures, so there’s still allot of room to make an even better Zelda game if the graphics are to become top notch. One can only dream I gues….

  7. I’m actually mixed on open world being the new standard for now. Besides making the development cycles even longer, BoTW lacked things that I was fond of the old traditional games.
    1. The music was set aside in favor of more natural sounds, while natural sounds helps you become more immersed given the setting and environment, it’s not exactly the most memorable. When I listen to songs from Zelda, Mario, and so many other games, it fills me with so many memories that environmental sounds, while relaxing, can’t give me.
    2. I was a little disappointed in the dungeons this time around. In past games, the interiors of the dungeons mirrored the personality and structure of where the dungeons were located at. The Fire Temple in OoT was a steaming volcano, Snowpeak Ruins felt like a mansion you’d find in an icy mountain. Even the bosses would match the very setting of the dungeons. The Divine Beasts just felt like four different parts of the same dungeon, what with the same design and the same boss appearance wise.
    3. The problem I have with the story is only minor and I feel like it could be easily resolved in the future titles. You can still have the freedom to move around, but the places that you visit like the Gorons, Rito, Zora, Gerudo, etc. could have their own story that could be a little fleshed out more rather than having the most of the story being focused on flashbacks. I never really understood the argument that stories can’t work in nonlinear games, especially when concerning Zelda. You could complete temples in OoT in any order while still making coherent sense of the story and there being no inconsistencies. The only part of the game that really relied on the story was the Deku Tree since it introduced you to the story, and BoTW did this as well when restricting you to the first four shrines rather than be free to roam the ENTIRE map right off the bat.
    4. Lastly, I wonder how they can have the open world aspect in future games and still make it feel fresh. While the open world aspect gives you a lot of freedom in exploration and makes you feel in charge, the novelty just wears off for once when you discover everything the world has to offer and you’re just left with a large landscape to run around in. I know I’m in the minority when I say this, but once when you become familiar with your surroundings, no matter how large it is, it just takes away the enjoyment that I won’t be able to relive in future playthroughs. What made me a fan of the Zelda series ever since 1998 was because of the music, the dungeons, and the story, with the exploration being at the very bottom of my list. Exploration is just not something that makes me return to a game after being done with my first playthrough. To me, one of the most important aspect of a game is the story, it’s what makes me a fan of the Professor Layton series, and being able to play Paper Mario TTYD 7 times and still not tiring of it, but no game can have only one component for it to rely on to make it great.

  8. Good. BOTW is easily the best Zelda game to me.
The old Zelda games are good and all, but the fact I was able to put in over 100 hours in a single playfile of Botw is something I’ve never been able to do in a Zelda game. And it was constantly fun. I’m already anticipating the next game to see what additions and improvements they make. Maybe we’ll get large dungeons built into the world, more items, magic, etc… who knows.
As long as they keep the dynamic puzzles, and make the world feel as immersive as Botw, I’m totally down.

  9. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

The problems I have with Breath of the Wild are as follows in no particular order.

    1. The lack of field music.

    2. The lack of enemy variety.

    3. You didn’t need to complete the entire main story to get the true ending & only had to get all of Link’s memories of Zelda. Once you complete the Captured Memories quest & get the Master Sword, you didn’t even need to clear the divine beasts. Fucking horrible!

    4. The dungeons, though intuitive with being able to control the layout a bit using the map, were sadly boring & way too short. I think they spent way too much time with the shrines. The lack of threat in the dungeons didn’t help matters, either. You’d think the inside of these things would have been well guarded since they screwed Calamity Ganon over 10,000 years prior.

    5. The lack of an enemy that actually hunted you down regardless of where you were on the map was a total letdown. With that being a problem, I wasted no time in going for the Yiga hideout in Gerudo so I could get them to actively hunt me down in Hyrule. I was hoping the Guardians would actively hunt Link as the damn reveal trailer for the game way back before it had a name implied but they sadly only stuck to certain areas & only really ventured away from the area they would haunt when they actually spotted you. Even then, they give up chasing you pretty easily if you put enough distance between you & them.

    6. You didn’t get much screen time with the champions. While I knew they were dead, I was hoping you’d at least see more of them through flashbacks. Sadly, the champions only got a total of 3 memories that they appeared in: 2 as a group with Link and Zelda & one with just one of the champions and Link.

    7. No quest lines where multiple quests were connected to one goal or character. I guess I’ll have to rely on Witcher 3, Ocarina of Time 3D, and Majora’s Mask 3D for that fix. :/

If they can just fix these issues with the next open world Zelda, I’ll actually love the idea of open world becoming the new Zelda standard. Til then, I’d rather go back to the old style but with jumping & voice acting, the highlights of Breath of the Wild, becoming a thing in that old style. Oh & alternate outfits for Link, too, with special abilities.
