Dev Blog Gives Detailed Look At Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Sound Effects

The amount of time, energy, thought (and money) that goes into making a video game is quite often a real eye-opener. We learned a while back that the Zelda: Breath Of The Wild team consisted of 300 employees that worked tirelessly towards creating one of the most critically-acclaimed titles in the Zelda series to date. Some say it is a masterpiece.

Thanks to an official Japanese Development blog, we now get an insight into the efforts the team went through to bring players an even more immersive experience through the power of sound effects.

  • A lot of focus was put on sound effects in order to immerse players in the world of Hyrule
  • The development team worked with Sound Racer, a studio specialised in sound effects
  • This studio also worked on Xenoblade Chronicles X
  • They recorded more than 10,000 different sounds for the game
  • The team used a school bag to simulate the sound of rubbing leather
  • For the sound of “normal” footsteps, they mixed various kinds of sands
  • For the sounds of equipment, they had to search for various materials and find ways to use them
  • They used an actual block of ice to recreate the sound of footsteps on ice
  • With the ice block, it always ended up melting or getting cracks when the staff had to walk on it
  • Link’s footsteps were made by a woman
  • Depending on Link’s actions and the equipment he’s using/wearing, the recorded sounds were separated out individually
  • The volume is changed as needed to make a particular sound stand out
  • Check out sound effect samples here

  1. sadly most people don’t care about attention to detail, i for one do. i sometimes look at textures on some wii u games like xenoblade x and botw, sure they are not ‘super ultra hyper turbo ex championship alpha mega buttcheeks’ graphically realistic but i look at them and think how impressive they are.

  2. This is what almost all big blockbuster movies do for sound effects, its really cool and there are videos showing how its done with a side comparison of footage from the movie

      I watched one such sound effects video for one of the Ghost Rider movies. I think it was the second one.

      1. That tragedy of a movie? I’ve never seen a franchise do a reboot and keep the main actor. Get like a reboot and a sequel at the same time honestly. The first one was decent considering Marvel was just starting out with their new cinematic universe. Could have been a lot better clearly. If it came out now, after all the MCU movies, I wouldn’t be so forgiving to it. The second one though. Felt like they were trying to make it into a comedy. And what was your boy Nick Cage doing everytime he transformed? At least in the first one he didn’t do that weird shit. And the pissing flames scene. Seriously? Ghost Rider isn’t a joke! He’s not Deadpool (not saying anything bad about Deadpool).

          The first one is definitely superior. I do like the sequel/reboot, though, for it’s attempt to be scarier. Least most of the Ghost Rider scenes were awesome & Cage, as usual, did a great job playing a lunatic. But yeah, the first was better & I hate how they got a different actor for Mephisto in 2. I want Peter Fonda back as Mephisto! D:<

          1. I liked him as Mephisto too. I really wish they would do another attempt at bringing Ghost Rider back. And Punisher (movie, not tv). Personally, I loved both Punisher movies. Well, the new ones. The original I liked for its time, but obviously it isn’t anywhere near Marvel’s current awesomeness. I don’t know why so many people hated the two newer ones. I thought they were both really good. Especially Warzone. But maybe that’s because I loved the action? I don’t know. Ghost Rider and Punisher are two of my four favorite Marvel characters, along with Hulk and Gambit. The Gambit movie better be good (and still happening). Supposedly Channing Tatum is going to play him. He damn sure better do good. Because I never would have picked him to play Gambit. So, you wanted it? You better deliver buddy. Hulk the first movie I didn’t even bother to finish. That almost never happens. Even if I don’t like a movie, I will usually finish because I’m curious to see the end. But when I saw Hulk dogs, I was like “Nope!” I liked the Incredible Hulk. And Mark Ruffalo has been killing it in the Avengers movies. So they got Hulk going strong at least.

              I liked The Incredible Hulk. Edward Norton was awesome. (I heard he use to have anger issues back in the day & that’s one of the reasons he was picked for the role.)

              Ang Lee’s Hulk was… okay…. Yeah; it was horrible..! If not for Jennifer Connelly, I wouldn’t bother with the movie either. lol I can give a run down of the ending of it if you’re curious & still don’t know what happened.

              I still have yet to watch the original Punisher movie with Dolph Lundgren. I’m a Lundgren fan so I’ll watch it some day. And I did enjoy the other 2 Punisher movies, too. (John Travolta played a good guy for so much of his career that he always nails it whenever he’s playing a villain. Thomas Jane is pretty awesome, too. I enjoyed his fight with the Russian who was played by Kevin Nash.)

              Not sure how I feel about Tatum as Gambit since I enjoyed the guy who played him in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

              1. Edward Norton is a really good actor. I heard he’s a perfectionist. Might be a cause for his anger issues haha. Sure, spoil the Ang Lee one. I did catch like the last five minutes once, but I have no idea what happened. I’m curious enough to red it, but not watch it haha. The Dolph Lundgren one, just keep in mind it was like early 90s. So there wasn’t too much brutality haha. But still enjoyable for its time. Travolta is another great actor. I liked his Howard Saint character. He always does good. Thomas Jane was definitely great. Diesel kicked his ass though! Until that soup or whatever got thrown on his face haha. I was waiting for a jack knife, but it never came haha. Tatum is hit and miss for me. Sometimes I like his movies, sometimes I don’t. You’re thinking of Taylor Kitsch, who I thought did good as well. Tatum is apparently from Louisiana, so that’s one reason they picked him. But he doesn’t look like Gambit to me. I’m cautiously optimistic about the movie, although they haven’t really talked about it, so I’m not even sure it’s still going to happen sadly.

                1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                  He basically had a fight with his father who became Absorbing Man like midway through the movie. You know the rest having seen the last few minutes.

          Anyway, Ghost Rider is back in Marvel’s hands so we could be seeing all hell (quite literally) break loose in the Marvel Cinematic Universe once they finish with the Thanos & Infinity Gems storyline. (I hate how they are not calling them gems in the movies. I hope they start calling them that once Thanos becomes more active in the MCU. Infinity Stones just doesn’t have that awesome ring to it.

          1. Haha, I literally just finished responding to your other comment and said I hope they bring Ghost Rider back. I don’t mind that they don’t call them gems as much, because A) stones still sounds cool to me, although if I had to choose I would go with gems because it does sound cooler, and I hate when they change stuff from the original source, and B) I had forgotten that they were called gems in the comics/cards until after a few of the MCU movies came out and I started googling the hell out of Marvel stuff to nerd out on. Speaking of Thanos, I CANNOT wait for Infinity War. I’ve watched the “trailer” for it several times, and I get pumped up every time. First time I actually had slight tears of joy (not balling my eyes out or anything like that). That NEVER happens. I just love that trailer. And all it is is clips from the movies we’ve already seen. But I don’t know man. It just hits me. I haven’t had so much anticipation for a movie in… well, maybe ever. I really hope the second movie is still about Thanos. They changed the names from Infinity War I and II to Infinity War and TBA. If they think they can do Thanos justice in one movie, they’re out of their freaking minds.

            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

              Yeah. You don’t do such build up for a villain only to have him in one freaking movie. It better be nearly 4 hours long if that’s the case.

              1. Yep. And not just the buildup for him, but all the good guys that are going to be in the movie trying to stop him. Avengers, Spidey, Adam Warlock, Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr. Strange, and whoever gets added in.

                1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                  I’m hoping for characters from the Netflix shows & Agents of Shield, like Ghost Rider, to appear, too.

                  I wonder when we’ll see Madam Web and/or The Beyonder appear. With Dr Strange being in the mix, they could appear sooner rather than later. If not fully than at least as cameos.

                  1. I only saw the very first episode of AoS when it first came out. School prevented me from watching it. But when I graduate I plan on doing so. I don’t know who Madam Web is or The Beyonder, though I have at least heard of the Beyonder. Is Madam Web one of those Spider Women? I heard they were going to put Ghost Rider into AoS. How was he in it?

                    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                      No clue as I haven’t really watched any of AoS. As for Madam Web, she’s one of those powerful beings like The Beyonder from what I gathered from the Spider-Man cartoon that use to be on Fox Kids. She acted as a guide & mentor to Peter Parker.

                      1. I watched a Spider Man cartoon growing up. But I’m guessing a different one. I don’t remember any mentors. Weren’t there like several cartoons for Spidey?

                    2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                      I noticed an article title on yahoo saying they have too many superheroes ready for Infinity War. Now I hope there is a line in the movie where Thanos exclaims “there aren’t enough of you to stop me” or something along those lines. lol

                      1. I saw that headline but didn’t click on it. Yahoo doesn’t did very good with spoiler warnings. And their writers are stupid. Too many superheroes? Don’t write about something if you don’t know about it. Do they actually think just the Avengers cab defeat Thanos? Idiots.

                        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                          I’m more concerned by the comment sections of Yahoo than the actual articles. lol I’m glad I only use Yahoo for email purposes & to get links to other site’s articles.

                          1. The comment section is pathetic. Always a bunch of idiots throwing political insults at the other side. Even in nonpolitical articles. So much hate on both sides. Yahoo is the epitome of what is wrong with this country haha. By the way, has yahoo been crashing like crazy for you lately? It used to do it on occasion, but the past week it happens all the time.

                            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                              I noticed the worst tend to be some, if not most, of the conservatives on Yahoo. Post an article about Ariel Winter, for instance, & they go all ballistic because she’s showing too much skin. lol Or whining about “why is this news!?” I’m like “It’s the entertainment news section! If you don’t like the articles about celebrities, get the hell out!” My favorite comment is “why should I care what this celebrity thinks!?” when they read an article about a celebrity they don’t agree with but is all celebrating when it’s about a celeb they do agree with. Some liberals aren’t any better, though. *shrug* Whatever. Just a bunch of losers on the internet, anyway.

                              The only issue I’m having with Yahoo is when I click on an email & go from email to email then delete an email so I can delete the others I already read as a group, I get a stupid blank page saying “There was a problem.” so I have to hit the inbox button. It gets annoying when I was on a specific page & I have to go back to that page to get to the emails on there I haven’t read. (I’m using Yahoo Basic Mail because I don’t like the newest Yahoo Mail.)

                              1. I know exactly which comments you’re talking about. Do I think she’s looking for attention? Yes. But I gladly give it to her haha.I sure ain’t complaining. You want to dress like that, I have no problems with the free eye candy. One thing I think people don’t get is that Yahoo (at least from what I’ve read in the comments) gears your headlines to what you click on. So the more you click on the Kardashians or Trump or Hillary or whoever it is you hate, the more of those articles you will get. So by clicking on what you hate, you’re just ensuring you will see more of it haha. Probably not the intent of the function, but it is pretty funny. They are all basically dooming themselves to endless celebrity articles.

                                1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                  The problem is too many busybodies worrying about someone else’s soul as if theirs will get dragged down with it if they don’t speak out against it. Honestly, by trying to crucify these people, they aren’t exactly keeping their souls clean since only God is supposed to be allowed to judge a person’s soul. There is a difference between trying to convince people to change their ways & simply trying to shove your beliefs down someone else’s throat. As they say, the path to Hell was paved with good intentions. *shrug* Oh well. Not my problem. lol

                                  1. Yeah. They have way too much time on their hands to be constantly typing negative comments about people they don’t even know. And it’s not like the celebrities are going to read their comments and suddenly become model citizens haha. Do I think some celebrities are absolute morons? Definitely. Do I comment on every article about them? Nope. And as you described them, they are all basically hypocrites with the way they judge. And if there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s a hypocrite.

                        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                          lol Too bad it’s one of the worst censored things ever. Can’t even say death or died!? Seriously!? Oh & you can’t say blood! Morbius the Living Vampire sucks out their “plasma” instead. *facepalm*

                          1. Wow. That’s honestly pathetic haha. Death I could see them maaaaaaaaybe stretching that they didn’t want to traumatize small children. Huge stretch. I think it’s completely stupid, but I guess. But blood? The hell? It’s part of our body! If a kid gets a cut, do we tell them they’re plasma-ing?

                            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                              Kids should know death is an actual thing. Otherwise, they might do something stupid.

                                1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                  I’d still enjoy it since most of the censoring is just characters not finishing their sentences when they are about to mention someone’s death or they get cut off before saying it by another character reacting to the news or something. As for the plasma thing, it never really bothered me when watching the show as I was too busy enjoying myself in spite of it. With that in mind, it’s bad with censoring but not to the point of ruining the cartoon. If anything would keep me from watching it, it’d be the fact the series is never given a resolution or ending.

                                  1. Oh, so it’s not earth shattering, just point and laugh stupidity. Ok. That’s acceptable then if I ever rewatch it haha. Although not having an ending might deter me from watching it because I hate not having closure at the end of a show or movie.

                        2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                          In spite of that, it was still a great cartoon show for it’s time. Like the Punisher with Lundgren.

                          1. Oh for sure. I don’t remember much about it, but I remember that I loved it. That and X-Men. And both would seemingly always restart instead of progressing haha. It was like, what?! You’re starting over again?! No! I want new epsiodes! Ninja Turtles too.

                            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                              I hate that Spider-Man ended on a bloody cliff hanger. Sadly, unless it was Power Rangers, a ton of shows on Fox Kids ended with cliffhangers like VR Troopers, Big Bad Beetleborgs, & Knights of Tir Na Nog. Power Rangers buried nearly everything that went up against it in the 90s.

                              1. I felt like a lot of shows back then just ended without any real ending. Like they just didn’t get renewed. Like the show Pirates of the Dark Water. Loved that show. But it ended way before they finished their mission. Power Rangers definitely destroyed its time slot. It occurred to me just now… We’re old haha.

                                1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

                                  Or they didn’t feel like bothering. lol A 30 minute or an hour long “movie” to close out the loose ends would have been nice for those of us that enjoyed the show.

                                  Ya just had to bring that up… *remembers he’s 30* D: Welp. Time to go bald & start screaming at children to get off my lawn. lol

                                  1. That would have been a good compromise for some shows. That’s a good idea. Too bad it’s like 20 years later haha.

                                    All those whippersnappers and their crazy new words! When I was a kid, I had to walk 0.4 miles to school! (I actually just googled the distance from my childhood home and elementary school haha)

                2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

                  While I like this, I still wish there would have been more field music. Honestly, I’d rather lose this attention to sound detail if it meant getting my field music back.

                  1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

                    ||It was called “Breath of the Wild” for a reason…||

                    ||And where have you been hiding?…||

                    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits. This use to be something that awaited those for all consoles. It's sad it's mostly just a PS4 slogan these days. Maybe Nintendo will get back to that greatness with the Switch. Only time will tell.}

                      Been busy with Breath of the Wild (I had over 500 hours in that game last time I checked so it’s probably at 600 now) & Pokemon Sun/Moon to finish my Pokemon collection (just waiting on Marshadow to be released in an event.) That & my brother hasn’t been able to play his PS4 for the last few weeks because his controller was broken & he couldn’t get a new one til just recently so he’s been hogging the desktop.

                      Of course, I might vanish again (after E3 is over & the hype from that event has died down at least) so I can work on my PS4 backlog. I started the other day with Until Dawn. Since it’s part of the interactive movie genre of video games, I figured it’d be the quickest game to play & get out of the way of my backlog since I read the game only takes around 10 hours to beat. Anyway, since I had over 400 emails to go through & I got through all of them, most being notifications for this blog, I’m hoping I won’t spend as much time on the internet tomorrow. (Technically it is tomorrow already since it’s nearly 3 am here. lol)
