Nintendo surprised quite a few people last night by announcing that their paid online service for the Nintendo Switch had been pushed back till 2018. Some fans were rejoicing that online play on the Nintendo Switch will now be free until 2018. The full paid online service is $20 a year and includes ongoing access to a library of classic games with added online play. Users can play as many of the games as they want, as often as they like, as long as they have an active subscription. Here’s more details:

Starting this summer, any Nintendo Switch owner with a Nintendo Account and a supported smart device will be able to use a version of the smart-device app with limited functionality. We have nothing further to announce at this time.
Is a subscription to the new Switch online service the only way to get classic games or will there also be a virtual console-type service that allows you to purchase games individually?

I think it’s definitely coming, but it sounds like it’s either not ready to go yet, or they just don’t want news of it to distract from the online service. Hopefully we get a lot more details at E3.

Nevermind, at first I thought they were asking if the games were available permanently and not being switched out monthly like rumors are suggesting. I thought having to be subscribed to the service to play was a given.
Actually its not a rumor. The whole being switched out monthly was what they announced initially in that Nintendo Switch direct back in (jan? Feb?)
But now we have conflicting information, I guess we’ll have to wait for E3 or the actual service to know for sure how it’s going to be handled.
Well it could be that they are backpeddling from their previous comments or that the person being interviewed just didnt have the right information. I hope we get to keep them like with Live and Plus.

I think you are talking about the Xbox service. Ninty haven’t really said anything about the online service and it’s really scary

Ok I think I’ve made up my mind about the online subscription and I’d say it’s time for people to stop complaining about this. The whole voice chat situation is terrible. That’s easily agreeable; but for $20 dollars a year you get online multiplayer and full access to a library of Nintendo’s classic games with added online functionality. That’s a great deal. On Xbox you’d be paying $60 a year for the online subscription plus an extra $120 a year if you want Game Pass, which gives you access to a library of X1 and 360 games. Granted, there are quite a few other features and perks involved with Xbox Live. Hell, maybe xbox live is a better deal; but c’mon. It’s a measly $20 a year. As long as the online infrastructure isn’t completely terrible, no one is getting ripped off here.

The game pass is a separate service. You still get to download and keep about 5 Games With Gold every month with XBL Gold. These include Xbox One and Xbox 360 backwards compatible games. Plus, XBL is a MUCH more robust network service.
I agree, a few years back it was a little more of a scam as it was just a pay gate with no benefits but once PlayStation came around with PS+ and its benefits, Xbox stepped their game up. So you really only need to pay $60 a year. No need to bring the Game Pass into it as Nintendo doesn’t have anything remotely like that service.
Fair. I mentioned the Game Pass because I felt that, as a Netflix-like service, it was more similar to Nintendo’s Classic Collection service than Games with Gold is. They both operate the same way.
Like I said, Xbox Live may be a better value, but I think that $20 a year is still a small price for what’s included in Nintendo’s service, as long as the voice chat is the only thing that’s screwed up.
SNES games in “consideration”? While I was under the impression added online play would make these games take longer to be cranked out, that statement doesn’t leave a good sign for the long run. Sigh… :(
They originally said SNES games would be part of the service at some point, I wouldn’t worry about it too much, I think we’ll get them eventually.
That’s a huge relief. Whoever is answering these questions must not be properly informed in their workplace, or they just don’t really care.
I think it’s because it might be info that is planned for E3 or later down the road. Nintendo has a very structured plan and schedule for when they release information. It’s all part of their marketing strategy because it gets a continuous buzz of people talking about them like we are doing right now. 😁

Probably. We won’t see Virtual Console or SNES games on the free games collection until after the Holidays when the SNES Classic has sold out and run its course like the NES mini.

-.- At this point, the secrecy is just outright pissing me off. If they are worried about Sony or Microsoft copying them, pfft. That’s a pathetic excuse because, so far, it sounds like Nintendo’s system for paid online is total trash compared to Playstation Plus & Xbox’s paid online service so why in the fuck would they want to copy that? I guarantee they won’t want to copy any of Ninty’s ideas in this regard. They’d regret it dearly if they tried, though, as most of their install base would crucify them like a lot did to Don Mattrick back in the day. *chuckles* Okay. I’m out of this article. I’m just making myself angrier.
For 20 dollars a year, really I’d be OK with paying that just for online play. It’s incredibly cheap.
