During today’s Pokémon Direct presentation, Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company, and Junichi Masuda, Director of GAME FREAK, announced upcoming Pokémon titles for Nintendo consoles.
Pokémon is making its way to Nintendo Switch later this year with Pokkén Tournament DX. Along with all the content from both the Wii U and arcade versions of Pokkén Tournament, the Pokémon fighting game where Pokémon in battle move in direct response to the player’s actions, Pokkén Tournament DX also introduces an array of exciting new features to create the ultimate Pokkén experience. Pokkén Tournament DX features include:
- Play Pokkén anytime, anywhere on Nintendo Switch – Play Pokkén Tournament DX in TV mode, handheld mode, or share a Joy-Con controller with another Trainer to battle one-on-one in tabletop mode anywhere!
- A brand-new fighter – Decidueye enters the battle, alongside all previous Pokémon from the Wii U and arcade versions.
- New Support Pokémon – Litten and Popplio make their debut to lend their support in battle.
- Team Battle mode – Pick three Pokémon and battle it out to be the first to defeat all your opponent’s Pokémon to win in the new Team Battle mode.
- Group Match mode – Find similar skilled players in battle rooms for intense and fun battles online.
- Daily Challenges – Complete a variety of different daily challenges.
- Watch battle replays – Hone your skills by watching other players’ replays and share your best matches online with the new replay feature.
- Jump straight into battle – All characters and Support Pokémon will be available right from the start of the game.
Pokkén Tournament DX will launch on Nintendo Switch September 22, 2017.
During Pokémon Direct, viewers also saw the first footage from the newest titles in the Pokémon series, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon. Two new Pokémon forms were shown resembling that of the Legendary Pokémon Solgaleo and Lunala. Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon have been powered up with new additions to the story and features from Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon are scheduled to release worldwide on November 17, 2017—more information about the games will be revealed later this year.
Also announced, the second titles in the Pokémon series, Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver, will be making their way to the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console. Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver were released in Japan on November 21, 1999, as the second set of titles in the Pokémon series. These games, which debuted as Game Boy Color-titles in Japan, are being recreated into Virtual Console versions such that their screens appear just as they did on the Game Boy Color. Both titles will be compatible with the wireless communication features of the Nintendo 3DS and Trainers can look forward to Link Trades and Link Battles between Virtual Console versions of Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver. In addition, these titles will be compatible with the Time Capsule function, which allows players to Link Trade Pokémon between the Virtual Console versions of Pokémon Gold or Pokémon Silver and the Virtual Console versions of Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, or Pokémon Yellow in Pokémon Centers within the games. Both titles will be compatible with Pokémon Bank and will also launch on September 22, 2017.

I generally feel pretty satisfied about this direct. I never did expect a main Pokémon game on Switch this soon, so I’m obviously not disappointed by that, but I am a bit surprised that UltraSun/Moon are coming out so soon after their original versions. I definitely don’t think that these will be quite as amazing as Black/White 2, but I might be happily proven wrong.
I would be excited for Pokken Tournament DX if I hadn’t already bought it last year on Wii U (and it’s not quite as “Deluxe” as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was, basically just giving the arcade-only characters that should’ve already been updated into the Wii U version).
Also, I’m a bit bummed that Crystal isn’t coming to the 3DS Virtual Console, but as far as I know that’s because of the Japanese version’s defunct cellphone features (which were omitted in worldwide releases, which confuses me as to why they can’t just use the worldwide release then).

I agree with the Switch statement. It wasn’t that long ago when Gamefreak started hiring devs for better 3D models. Masuda even said that they were CONSIDERING on making a Switch game if it produced enough sales, which means a Switch game wasn’t even in the works yet. To think we’d get a Switch game so soon is silly, it won’t be until gen 8.
So basically we can expect an amazing Nintendo Spotlight at E3 without these pokemons around.

I didn’t want another 3DS main series Pokémon game. The system is too weak for Sun and Moon, so why are they making even bigger versions for it? They should have dropped the 3DS at the end of this year and given Sun and Moon another year while they develop a Pokémon engine for Switch.
Pokken Tournament DX is fine. The Switch needs more games and if they can’t be bothered to do a main series game, at least Namco can step in to fill the Pokémon void.
Annoyed that there’s no option for Pokémon Crystal on the Virtual Console but I’ll probably ignore GS anyway. I’d be interested if they decided to port HGSS to Switch, turning the console vertically to support the two screens.

No, I was not getting excited for Sinnoh remakes. I have no desire for remakes. I’d probably enter a contest to win a download, but definitely not spend money on it.
No, I did not expect a full blown Pokemon Switch game. I was expecting “Stars” to be a throwaway game that’s cute for a while, but soon forgotten, like Pokemon Channel. Remember that?
No, the added features of Pokemon Tokken DX are not worth the price. While new fighters are always welcome, it’s just an expensive DLC in the end. Just like MK8Deluxe was. Since I was one of the few who bought the WiiU DLC. Most of the added features for DX also aren’t getting me excited. had I not gotten this on WiiU, then I’d be excited.
That is why I am excited, I never bought the Wii U version. Now I get to play with Pokemon Persian while I play on the plane hoping to finally become thin.

I’m still a little bummed that a mainline Pokémon game wasn’t announced for the Switch at this mini Direct but maybe they’re saving it for next year or for E3 or at least I hope they are. I’m still a little hopeful for Pokkén Tournament DX to be a much better game than original Wii U title. Hopefully more features, new characters and more stages will be added within the coming months. A native 1080p resolution and a stable 60fps will more than likely make me want to double dip

I remember every single one of these kinds of complaints back when Black 2 and White 2 were announced. The 3DS had come out and we were getting another DS game. It was a sequel set in the same region with the same pokemon, but with a fusion twist.
Black 2 and White 2 are still considered one of the best entries in the series. :^)

This is all good news for me, because I never got Sun or Moon and I also never got Pokken Tournament (even though I planned on getting all three of those games, I just never found the time).

I hope Ultra Sun/Moon are sequels & not remakes as the direct seems to be giving a strong impression of. I do like the fusion of Necrozma with Solgaleo & Lunala, though. They could have been saved for actual sequels though if that’s not what these games are. If they are & since I got every single Pokemon from this gen, I might not bother with these games as I’m sure the next mainline Pokemon games will have a way to get those fusions since they are most likely tied to a key item anyway.
