Zelda Producer Eiji Aonuma Says That He Thinks He’ll Exceed Miyamoto “Some Day”

Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma recently took part in a giant interview with Jin Fujisawa of Square Enix. Many topics were discussed, including Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, Dragon Quest, and the Zelda series as a whole. However, they also discussed the reputation Shigeru Miyamoto has, where there are people who worship him like God. It resulted in Aonuma admitting that there’s something he wants to do some day:

Aonuma:
Well, as I was listening to you, I realize that my relationship with Mr. Miyamoto is that of boss and his junior staff. Maybe that’s why I am still making the Legend Of Zelda.

Fujisawa:
That’s possible. Mr. Horii is a freelancer. There is a big difference.

Aonuma:
I think that Mr. Miyamoto is a great man, but someday I want to surpass him.

――Ohhhhhh.

Aonuma:
Well, because I’m working with him in the same building. I heard there are people overseas who worship Mr. Miyamoto like God, but I’m not like that. And I think I’ll exceed him some day. That hasn’t happened yet, though. But I don’t think he is a divine being. He is somebody you can catch up with. That’s why we end up trying.

      1. Well Luigi I think Mister Miyamoto (your father) decided to give his creation to students who can trust forever and for what I think it’s ok.

For me this is a good opportunity to give more time on StarFox because come on, this series needs to be alive, they cannot leave Fox and his team on the Wii U. Not because StarFox Zero is bad but the videogame series must continue.

    1. its an R. Kelly moment. ‘My mind is tellin’ me no but my body, my body’s tellin’ me yes’ thank you Barry Lewis of My Virgin Kitchen because that was very stonking and also for ruining things in a good way.

Just fuse the old traditional gameplay of Zelda that Link to the Past started with the new stuff that Breath of the Wild did very well and BOOM!!! You’ll surpass Miyamoto just like that!

Although, with Miyamoto being that guy still not quite out of the 80s & 90s, I want to say Breath of the Wild is good enough. It just needs some more tweaks.

      ||When it comes to Zelda yes but overall, no one in any faction is even close to Lord Miyamoto…||

          ||Anyone can try but to surpass Lord Miyamoto, one must fulfill every criteria, creativity and influence Lord Miyamoto has had combined and that is a 99,67% probability for anyone to never achieve…||

          1. I understand Commander. If we expect a copy of Mister Miyamoto that’s impossible. Not Mister Aunoma, not a Nintendo developer and even I cannot be like Mister Miyamoto.

But Mister Aunoma and the others want only to be better.

Even I want to be better in Gaming Development

      1. there is only one person i’d say can surpass the GOD Shigeru Miyamoto: Yoshiaki Koizumi. This man worked on The legend of Zelda, Mario and Donkey Kong.
I am not saying Mr. Aonuma won’t exceed Miyamoto, but Koizumi worked more games than just the Super Mario series, it is a shame he is only producing Mario now.

  2. You can try, Mr. Aonuma, but it’s really hard to match someone who was there on the ground floor. Aonuma has been getting a lot of attention in recent years, but Miyamoto is just too iconic. How can you beat the FATHER of Mario and Zelda?

I’d say he’s just one step away from surpassing Miyamoto in regards to Legend of Zelda. Just need to fuse Ocarina of Time traditions with Breath of the Wild’s stuff & he’s got my vote that he’s surpassed Miyamoto.

      1. Not bad criteria. Personally, I think Miyamoto is more renowned for the icons he’s created (Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong) more than his gameplay ideas (things like Star Fox Zero come to mind as a reason why).

So really, anyone who somehow creates a gaming mascot more popular than Mario will surpass Miyamoto- that’s not going to be easy. My two cents.

      2. Aonuma has done a great job with the Zelda series, but he hasn’t done much beyond that. Miyamoto created six of Nintendo’s main series’ and has a lot more varied work under his belt.

Give Miyamoto time. If he continues down the path he’s on with more crap like Star Fox Zero, he’ll damage his legacy just enough that it will allow someone, if not Aonuma, to surpass him no matter how much he’s done for the industry in the past. Basically, Miyamoto better reinvent the wheel, in a damn good way, if he wants to keep someone from surpassing his legacy any time soon. Like Aonuma said, Miyamoto isn’t a god & he can and will be surpassed one day, if not in his or our lifetime, as long as humanity is still around.

  3. In a sense he already has, but in another says he will never. Miyamoto has made some of my favorite franchises like Mario, Zelda, and Star Fox that will always live on in my memories. That being said, I’m not really a huge fan of the stuff he’s involved in now (still annoyed over him and Tanabe over Paper Mario) while I seem to enjoy some of Aonuma’s more recent works.

  4. Miyamoto is my God!

Aonuma is one of the best, also he is a great person. I ran into him at an E3 and the guy is always smiling (like Miyamoto)

          1. Yes, when you run into some game developers they are always smiling and eager to take a pic with you (including Kamiya!!!) on the other hand Sakurai is almost a jerk, on some E3 i noticed that he only stopped when someone made compliments on his works

            1. Well it’s always happy to see someone compliment to you for your work. For example 100 of person see your game, 90 says it’s beatiful and 10 bad it’s normal you are happy but sometimes see people always saying something that is wrong it makes you mad.

              1. What i tried to say is that he doesn’t care to greet people who call him unless they compliment his work, just look at the ssb invitational…he was no comfortable around those people who are HIS FANS.

I agree that sometimes it can be annoying to stop and be nice to everybody, i just lost my interest in Sakurai that day when i tried to greet him, i felt so bad and he was like nothing happened and the worst part is that his defenders damage control everything he do, as a game designer he is good (not awesome) but as a person i think he sucks

  5. In terms of history, sure Miyamoto’s got him beat so far. But a lot of Miyamoto’s ideas as of late have been pretty damn lacklustre.

  6. I also heard Miyamoto invented the NES controller.. . Which was one of the First controllers ever…. If not the first. To surpass that is an Everest jump.
But for what it’s worth, Aonuma and Sakurai San are the closest to his level…. Junichi Matsuda is also climbing fast

      1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at PS4 while Awaiting Greatness on Switch!}

If I remember correctly, Miyamoto came up with the idea for the directional buttons that’s standard on video game controllers & even found on some other things outside of video games, not the NES controller itself since the other buttons were on arcades & Ataris before the NES was even an idea.

  7. Of course Mister Aunoma can surpass his master.

It’s just every single relation from student and master.

For I think it’s good, because Mister Aunoma with his team created a master piece and now we just have to wait and see.

I hope Mister Miyamoto thinks about StarFox because that game must continue.

  8. Well, you have to do original excellent games, since he invented Mario, Zelda, Starfox, Pikmin, etc.
No, you don’t stand a chance unfortunately. Still you are a great director/producer and there is no shame in that.
Your target should be excellence, not genius. Excellence before anything, then you can be an excellent genius too… but always target excellence.

So tell me old man. What’s been happening in this shit hole while I’ve been slurping down some hoes

Welcome back. With the recent surge of people being 100% pro-Nintendo even to the detriment of Nintendo, we could use another guy that doesn’t have a Nintendo Wiimote or Joy-Con stuck up his ass. …Unless you’ve changed into one of them.. D:
