Sony Doesn’t Want PlayStation 4 Games To Have Cross-Play With Nintendo Switch

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced that cross-platform play is coming to Minecraft, allowing users on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC, mobile and VR to play together regardless of the platform they’re on. However, Sony isn’t keen on this idea and has blocked cross-play between PlayStation 4 and other platforms. Read on below for Sony’s reasoning behind its decision, according to PlayStation global sales and marketing head Jim Ryan:

Minecraft works cross-platform between Switch, Xbox and PC. Today, Rocket League was announced as working cross-platform between Switch, Xbox and PC. Both don’t work cross-platform with PlayStation. Now, is this Sony not playing ball? What is actually going on here?

Jim Ryan: It’s certainly not a profound philosophical stance we have against this. We’ve done it in the past. We’re always open to conversations with any developer or publisher who wants to talk about it. Unfortunately it’s a commercial discussion between ourselves and other stakeholders, and I’m not going to get into the detail of that on this particular instance. And I can see your eyes rolling.

Well, you must see that PlayStation owners are upset. They want to play with Switch owners, PC owners and Xbox One owners for these two big and important games, and they don’t have an explanation for why. That’s what I’m getting at, really.

Jim Ryan: Yeah. We’ve got to be mindful of our responsibility to our install base. Minecraft – the demographic playing that, you know as well as I do, it’s all ages but it’s also very young. We have a contract with the people who go online with us, that we look after them and they are within the PlayStation curated universe. Exposing what in many cases are children to external influences we have no ability to manage or look after, it’s something we have to think about very carefully.

It doesn’t seem to be a problem for Nintendo, perhaps the most mindful video game company of the protection of children.

Jim Ryan: Yeah, that’s true. Everybody has to take their own decisions. We’ll do that. Like I say, we have no philosophical stance against cross-play at all.

Is this a done deal? Or are you leaving the door open, perhaps?

Jim Ryan: I don’t think anything is ever a done deal. Anybody who is dogmatic in that manner is typically a fool. That said, to my knowledge, there is no live conversation ongoing at the moment.

  1. Maybe change the title. The interview doesn’t specifically talk about the Switch.

But regardless, interested interview. Sony is afraid of cooperation? They don’t want to unite? Something is suspicious…

  2. Hmm…I don’t have much else to say. Well, maybe just that this isn’t what I had expected at all. I am glad Nintendo is allowing this much.

  3. You can’t expose the PlayStation Nation to this bad hombres from the Xbox and Nintendo border. When Xbox sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re cheaters. And some, I assume, are good people.

  4. The articles says nothing of Sony not wanting PS gamers being able to cross-play with the Switch, it’s with ALL other systems at the moment. Sony has praised the Switch many times so stop with the BS reporting.

    1. The title is click baity, but its not wrong. SONY doesnt want PS gamers to do cross play with Switch…. XBOX and PC gamers. Of course a Nintendo blog would put emphasis on the Nintendo aspect.

      1. Not really that just alba he always make his articles click bait and never changes it I feel sad people who are going to take his article into different proportions

    1. “Nintendo move”???
This reminds me of MS and 360. MS was the one who made it perfectly clear that there was to be “no cross play with any system”.
It is kinda interesting see these companies rise and fall, again and again, it teaches humility to them.
Now it is only a matter of time when Sony thinks they are the God of the industry again, and can do no wrong.
But sadly, Sony is the only one out of the 3 that can not afford to be knocked off their high horse.
They have only one leg, no savings and a lot of debt.

      1. A “Nintendo move” is something that’s incredibly stupid done for stupid reasons.

Switch’s voice would be one example. Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival being another. The funny thing about this is that Nintendo themselves are going in on cross play.

      2. I’m interested in the last part of your comment. I’ve been wanting to take a closer look at Microsoft’s and Sony’s gaming divisions to see how they’re fairing financially, but I simply haven’t had the time. Do you have any solid info for Sony Interactive’s financial situation?

        1. I haven’t been that interested in Sony financials, so I don’t have actual numbers, these are just pretty common knowledge.
Different Sony divisions are in a bad place.
They’ve lost a lot of market share to Samsung and competition in consumer electronics. Sony Pictures hasn’t been that profitable either.
They had to give up on notebook market and phone market.
Their stock is still on the cheap side.
If PlayStation wasn’t as profitable as it is, they’d be looking at government bailout right about 2 years ago.

You wont be finding anything on Xbox financials though, they bury that shit deep in other more profitable ventures.
MS as a whole would survive a nuclear apocalypse.

          1. Lol completely agree about Microsoft. They’ve got a ton of money coming in from other avenues. They could potentially support the Xbox indefinitely. I’ve also tried looking for specific data on Xbox in their quarterly earnings, but they never breakdown the numbers.

I was unaware of Sony’s financial situation though. I’m going to have to take a closer look at how they’re doing. I just figured they were in a similar place as MS; namely, more than capable of supporting the Playstation even if it was losing money.

            1. If Sony and MS were in reverse situation as far as console sales goes, Sony might be filing for government bailout right about year ago.
Sony was going for pretty much the same bullshit as MS, but they were lucky that MS was first one to go to wolves, and Sony had the opportunity to make full 180, and bash MS in every turn.

              1. A prime example of why I don’t like them. I had another comment on here where I mentioned how Sony has perpetuated the idea of console wars in the past, and that’s one of the moments I was referring to.

                1. I like it when these publishers get knocked down.
They learn some humility and try extra hard to please their actual fans.
PS3 from 2007 to 2010 was pretty satisfying.
Community of the worse performing console is usually better as well.

I was thinking of getting xbone, but then those boneheads canceled Scalebound.
I know they renewed the trademark, but it seemed like PG and MS did not part in particularly good terms.

    2. And than? What’s the problem. Cross-platform gaming meaning you can play against other people from other consoles. This is something I like it because in Minecraft we can do a war against the Xbox guys and PC master race boiz.

      1. Fire Emblem Elitist

No company is bad it’s just ignorant fanboys and girls defending their chosen platform which is ok in theory but the extent they go to is boderline retarded! Every company has good and bad points but the switch is crap. The whole console war is pointless

  5. This is one of the reasons I don’t much care for Sony. From this and past instances, they seem to be opposed to cooperation with competition for the sake of the consumer. They also seem to be the most concerned with gaining a competitive edge over the competition. I can remeber a few times in the past when they reinforced the idea of “console wars”.

    1. Oh, they were so ready to suck a sloppy one when they were struggling to sell PS3.
But this is how it gets with the market leader.
MS was the market “leader” last gen, I’m not counting Wii, since that was Nintendo doing their own thing and totally killing it all the way to the bank.

  6. Glad I have an Xbox. Looks like I’ll be able to play Minecraft with old Nintendo buddies.

Not that I play minecraft. I mean if I DID play Minecraft. It’s more fun than you think… Legos but digital. I mean so I’ve heard. I wouldn’t know first hand, it’s not like I got addicted to it, which would be evident in my denying it, which I’m not, I mean… D:

On a serious note, how will cross play work when Switch doesn’t support the very large maps? Do they plan on upgrading the switch version? hmm.

    1. Switch, Xbox One, VR, and Windows 10 are all becoming pocket edition. They will all feature unlimited worlds and unified updates. Also, if you own a skin/texture pack in one version you will own it on all versions.

    2. Bruh, don’t deny it if you like Minecraft… legit nothing wrong with it in fact it’s a good thing because of just how open ended the game is… yeah the fandom is rather… cancerous, for lack of a better word, but it’s still one hell of a game

      1. I don’t really like games like Minecraft, I even passed on fallout 4 base building.
But somehow castle story is still fun to play with.

  7. Anubis, the Devil Dog

In other news Super Mario Odyssey is number 1 on trending. Well played Nintendo……..well played.

        1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

          ||You exposed yourself when you mentioned a specific sentence, but do go on, let the charade continue., we both know the truth dog…||

  8. Sony already got on a high horse?
Well, history has shown what happens when you get too cocky with your success.

  9. If PC, Xbox, and Switch start doing cross-ply, but not PS4, do they realize that people will stop playing/buying PS4 because they can’t play with their friends, while they have 3 better options that allow that? Their loss

  10. Every gaming company are always dochebags when things are going great for them. Time and time again they always bend for pressure when the competition is getting to rough.

  11. What a lame excuse. Plus that argument doesn’t work with Rocket League. Love how they didn’t go into that. “I can see you rolling your eyes”? Yeah, no shit.

  12. Sony wanting to look after children like some pedo or overprotective parent (the latter being a better analogy). When that’s usually NIntendo’s shtick. Odd world we live in…

  13. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4 & Nintendo Switch!}

Hopefully with a enough verbal & internet text backlash, Sony will quickly change their minds & allow cross console play. In fact, they better listen to that kind of backlash before the backlash goes beyond that & starts effecting game sales.

  14. “Anybody who is dogmatic in that manner is typically a fool.”

Why does this man still have a job?

Definite Sony fail. Their gaming arm may be strong but that’s all. Microsoft is working together with Nintendo. The underdogs this gen are working together, against the big dog.
