Level-5 has explained to Eurogamer that they are in an interesting position at the moment as they want to bring Professor Layton to Nintendo Switch, however due to the game’s unique play style they are having issues implementing it on the platform. The game would easily work in handheld mode, but it is when you put it in the dock that they are having difficulty envisioning how to play it. Here’s what Level-5 had to say:
“I played Zelda. I love the Switch. I think it’s amazing hardware. The problem is, the Layton series does a lot with the touchscreen and pointing. So, the problem with the Switch is, if you play on handheld you can do it, but if you put it on the dock… we’re trying to figure out how that would play into it.”
“That’s the stumbling block: when the Switch is docked, it works like a traditional home console, and you play it on your TV with a traditional controller setup. The Switch itself is unavailable to use as a touchscreen, as it is when played in handheld mode.”
“If we can get around that and figure out a way of doing it, definitely we’re looking into putting the next Layton onto the Switch,” Hino said.
Use the joycons as the stylus for the screen. I admit though.. .This will affect both the pacing and UI layout of the game.
1) on screen buttons become controller buttons.
2) what still needs touch can be done with a pointer moving with the left controlstick, The pointer will move slower when L is pressed in to enable precision controls.

Lol yea The motion tech is pretty accurate. Obviously it won’t be as easy as the touch screen but it won’t be anything that takes away from the experience imo
This paired with the option for motion pointing like Tomorrow Corporation did for World of Goo, Little Inferno and Human Resource machine – and normal touch for handheld mode – and everyone’s happy.
They should just make it for WiiU. :D

Not til I beat X and finish the Breath of the Wild DLC. THEN, well, I have so much software on it, it will become my retro console. I have all the Zelda’s or most. Same with Mario’s, Metroids, Starfox, NES and Sega Genesis games – My wiiU is a massive digital archive of games I can play myself or with my family, spanning decades of what I love of Nintendo. My WiiU will always have a place on my entertainment center! Its my Nintendo Time Capsule.
And I’m waiting til the very last second to buy a switch. Metroid prime 4 Bundle. So We’ll see how long it takes to release.

There are already ‘handheld only’ games on the Nintendo Switch. I don’t really see the point raised by Level 5.
All they have do is what they did in Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney where you did’t have to use the touchscreen for everything.
