Nintendo Discusses The Possibilities Of Bringing More Wii U Games To Switch

With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe having recently been crowned the fastest-selling Mario Kart title in the franchises’ history, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if we see more Wii U games getting the ‘deluxe’ port treatment. In a recent interview with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, IGN asked if Nintendo is planning any more Wii U ports for Nintendo Switch and this is what he had to say:

“The internal conversations we have is that on one hand, the development teams would love to showcase their content to a wider base, and certainly in short order the install base on Nintendo Switch will be larger than the install base we ended with Wii U,”.

Fils-Aime also touches upon Pokken Tournament DX for Nintendo Switch and comments on how Nintendo is reluctant to create doing straight ports. Understandably, it would seem that they feel they have a duty of adding more content to make the purchase worth your while:

“So there is that opportunity. What also drives the discussion, though is ‘what more will there be?’ Meaning, let’s take Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as an example. It needed to be the definitive version of that software for the consumer to be as excited as they are. Pokken Tournament DX with the additional fighters, the additional Pokemon, that was important for it to be an element of the game. What we are internally resisting is just a pure port, versus thinking about how not only do we showcase a game to a wider audience, but how do we make sure that there’s something more? So it’s an active discussion.”

  1. These party line answers are pretty disappointing. Nintendo at least owed those who purchase a Wii U an apology and an acknowledgement that they got it wrong. I’d be much happier with discounts on games i’ve bought and registered that they’re simply porting (which i’ve grabbed DLC for).

    1. Discounts are a good idea. But I don’t feel like I’m owed any sort of apology for owning a Wii U. I don’t feel buyer’s remorse for a system I bought like 30 good titles for.

      1. Maybe I got a little carried away. I had some great games too but I’m irked that they have not even tried to give a little something back for those who took the punt. Or even acknowledged how wrong they were.

  2. Smash Bros. 4 Deluxe! Now with Ice Climbers, Geno and my personal wish, Warioware’s kindergarten ninjas: Kat and Ana! Also, more stages, and Smash Run added to the main console version.

      1. It cost money. What if they actually add a big story mode making it finally better than the GC version in all aspects?
        I do prefer they expand a lot the previous installment than a new barebone one.

  3. I already bought all those games, so I’d rather them make sequels instead of a port with barely any new content, the least they could do is release some of that extra crap as dlc for the Wii U versions.

    Now with that being said I wouldn’t mind a smash port, as long as they add to it and combine the Wii U and 3DS versions into one huge game.

  4. Not Wii U games but I want Metroid Prime Trilogy and Galaxy remakes.

    Fully remastered HD graphics would be enough.

  5. Lol I just said this on the earlier post about Smash Bros (and almost everyday during E3 but…) bring on Smash Bros 4 Deluxe + (includes all DLC with 3ds content and won’t be a bit upset if they include Ice Climbers) ;)

  6. hey i got an idea! lets reward those who didnt support us by buying our product and slap the loyal fans who suffered droughts, cheap unfinished games, censorship etc. after all only 89% of the people who didnt buy a wiiu ridiculed us as a company, publisher, and tech developer. thats not too bad.

    shouldve went like this in my opinion:
    oh you want to play this game? well have i got news from you, this game is only available on wiiu. its amazing how peaple didnt give a damn about these games on wiiu, but want them on switch.

    1. They are bringing Nintendo Wii U games on the Switch because few people bought the Wii U. That’s why some games will be a port for the Switch. I hope they bring Star Fox Zero with normal controls just like Star Fox 64.

    2. It’s odd, because Nintendo usually has a backbone when things don’t go as planned. They said that they’re embracing re-using engines, so just use them for sequels. There’s no need to rip off the Wii U owners more than they already have been (and they have been by all parties in some way, though some did much more harm than others).

  7. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

    ||Yes fascinating, now save 4 of them for next year and continue to do so for coming years and also take some from the GCN era, starting with Metroid Prime Trilogy DX…||

        1. They could also add DLC tracks to Mario Kart, thing is jammed packed but after playing a couple hours it feels like we still see the same tracks over and over lol. Perhaps a Kirby Cup or Splatoon Cup pack would be cool but I think at this point they are saving all those ideas for MK9.

        2. As somebody who didn’t have a Wii U, I’d be really excited for a lot of straight ports, even without extra content. I find the reactions of people being bitter and angry and wanting to punish people who didn’t buy a Wii U rather silly. If you’ve already played the game and don’t want it again, don’t buy it.

          1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

            ||I only see one logical problem with ports and that’s the pricing, it should cost 50-60% of its original price, whether people played them before or not is irrelevant…||

          2. In fact if they already have for the Wii U it seems no problem to them. I don’t get the Wii U but I have the Switch so I hope to see Star Fox Zero, Donkey Kong tropical freeze and some other Nintendo Wii U games on the Switch.

          3. That’s not the problem. The problem is if they use those remakes as major releases instead of making new games and since Wii u owners already played those we would have to wait considerably more time for actual new games.

            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4 & Nintendo Switch!}

              Easy fix. Just have a 3rd party work on the port. Nintendo has done this with Twilight Princess HD, for instance, from what I recall.

          1. Each time I see you ask for Star Fox Zero throughout the thread I think more and more that you haven’t actually played it. You might as well just ask for a new Star Fox all together because controls aside, the flying sections were the only fun parts of that game.

            1. I didn’t played Star Fox Zero because I don’t bought the Wii U. But not because I didn’t want to buy it, but because the taxes of the University are insane. When I heard the rumor of a new console I decided to wait and then I bought the Switch.

              For what I think, Nintendo will do a port of Star Fox Zero, because Mister Miyamoto wants Star Fox be more popular, then bring the game on the Switch with the option of normal controls and be sure people will buy it.

          1. I don’t think they will do such port. Because Wind Waker appear on the GC, they remastered for the Wii U and now a port for the Switch? I don’t think so.

            I hope to see Star Fox Zero with normal controls just like Star Fox 64.

        3. It’s not a matter of “If” it’s a matter of “Which games?”

          The wii u had the honor of beign able to play nearly every zelda game, so I think the switch should too.

          • Wind Waker HD
          • Bayonetta 1 and 2 (Hopefully soon to be trilogy)
          • Smash bros Deluxe
          • Super mario 3d world Deluxe
          • Mario Maker?

        4. The only Wii U ports for the Switch I would be interested in is…….

          Smash Bros Deluxe
          Bayonetta 2 Deluxe
          W101 Deluxe
          Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze Deluxe
          Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Deluxe

          I personally don’t think Nintendo should bring every Wii U game over to the Switch but these titles are great enough to warrant another purchase especially with minor improvements here and there

        5. Reggie may be on to something here.
          I mean there are some games such as Star Fox Zero (which I personally liked btw) didn’t get the reception fans have hoped because they didn’t have the patience to master the control scheme, and even those who did felt it lacked unlockable content even when you collected all the medals.

          So I’ve been thinking, why not retool the game to use the Joy-Cons for motion control instead of being limited to multitasking with the gamepad? The motion controls for the Joy-Cons are pretty much easier to point and aim with anyway, and that way they wouldn’t have to look between two screens.

          Let’s not forget about the extra content regarding the medals. Why not unlock a hard mode? Or maybe add special hidden levels based on previous Star Fox titles? Or a hidden Final Boss?

          The possibilities of making Star Fox good again are just endless.

          1. I personally didn’t play Zero but I understand the backlash it got from players since these days developers need to adapt their games to the players convenience , sadly not the other way around.

            A little tweak in controls and perhaps extra meaningful content can be just the pazzaz that Nintendo is looking for here. Oh an of course 1080 version and to preferably run on 60fps, this is what I call a definitive version.

        6. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4 & Nintendo Switch!}

          I would love a port of Fatal Frame 5. Just add new alternate outfits for the characters & add the lingerie, Hyrule Warriors Princess Zelda cosplay outfit, & Zero Suit Samus cosplay outfit for every region instead of what they did with the original where Japan got the lingerie while everyone else got the cosplay ones which was basically stupid censorship to begin with where it doesn’t belong since it’s a fucking M rated game!

          1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4 & Nintendo Switch!}

            There might be others I’m forgetting but this is a big one for me since I wanted the game but never got it because of one of the reasons being what I listed above about the cosplay outfits being censorship & the fact I gave up on Wii U & moved on to the PS4 which I honestly should have done sooner than late 2015. Maybe then I wouldn’t have this huge ass backlog of PS4 games.

            But that was me back then: waiting for what would never come for the failure that is the Wii U because of my blind loyalty to Nintendo & the fact I use to be one of the fanboys defending Nintendo even when they didn’t deserve it. It was time to let go of such silly childish things as brand loyalty.

        7. Personally, the way I see it. They should release more of their backlog of Wii U games. But space them out so they fall in between the new Nintendo brand Switch games. That way, it will seem as though they are releasing their games twice as fast.

          1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4 & Nintendo Switch!}

            Hence why I wasn’t too happy with the Smash 4 port for Switch rumor. I’m all for ports but only when they are spaced out.

          2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4 & Nintendo Switch!}

            It was just too soon for yet another port as we got plenty as is.

        8. Really all first party Wii U games should be come to switch, and with enhancements.
          And their should also enhanced Wii/GameCube/N64 ports as well, with HD rendering, enhanced lighting, updated menus and text, HF sound. Possibly updated 3D models, animations, and textures. Honestly they should dedicate a office just for this.
