As most of you are aware Nintendo recently announced that its paid online service for Nintendo Switch has been delayed until 2018. There’s a taster of what to expect coming with the mobile application later this year. Polygon caught up with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime to discuss the online service and why it has been delayed until next year.
“As Nintendo looks at the overall online digital experience there’s a recognition that there’s a lot of work to be world class,” Fils-Aime said. “And we pride ourselves … We believe our IP is world class. We believe that when we create a piece of hardware it’s world class. We need to get our digital environment world class. And that’s what we’re working hard to do. “
“As we were proceeding along development, there were things we wanted to do with Nintendo Switch online that extended the development time,” Fils-Aime said. “When you look at the products [from Nintendo] that have been delayed, typically it’s worth the wait. Breath of the Wild is a great example.”
“We wanted to make sure that it is a robust, well-executed online environment, and for the $20 annual subscription fee, the consumer says, ‘This is a no-brainer. I want to participate. I’m all in.’”
Welcome to the party (11 years late)
Welcome to the World of Nintendo.
Anytime I hear Nintendo online I get a picture of the ridiculous headphones that are going to be used for voice chat lol
So far the only major Switch flaw imo.
“When you look at the products [from Nintendo] that have been delayed, typically it’s worth the wait. STARFOX ZERO is a great example.”
LOL
Typically does not equal always. There are some exceptions, Star Fox being one of them.
The problem of Star Fox was the controllers.
That game was bomb! What are you talking about? lol lol lol.
I think being bound to a smartphone app for the simplest online features is very, very far from being even remotely close to “world class”.
WORLD CLASS

Yes. This is something that I like to see. Robust Online, and because I’m D.Va I need robust online service from Nintendo.
Breath of the Wild is a great example. Who knows? Maybe they’ll make the voice chat situation better.
I honestly am not buying it. Why can’t they just release the essential online stuff this year followed by a full fledged online servicE.
.If they are delaying it’s launch that long then it shouldn’t just be robust, it should be revolutionary.
I don’t care speaking to strangers online. I just want to play with them not hear them. I prefer to play localy with my friends anyway.
Just let me play online with no major lags, bring the VC and “Netflix NES” and I’ll be happy.
I’ll just leave this here.
Cut the BS, BoTW was delayed for the Switch release, not for improvements.
Yeah. If it was delayed for improvements, why did the Gamepad features get removed from the Wii U version & the Switch is just a carbon copy of the Wii U port with no use of the HD Rumble which Wii U doesn’t have? If anything, this is like the Smash 4 fiasco but much, much worse as there is nothing to set the two apart while the version on the weaker system is holding the one on the stronger system back. Least Smash 4 3DS & Wii U both had different stages & game modes.
