Reggie Talks About Why Metroid: Samus Returns Was Developed For Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo and Metroid fans were extremely pleased to hear that there are two Metroid titles in development. We’ve got Metroid Prime 4 for the Nintendo Switch and Metroid: Samus Returns for the Nintendo 3DS. Polygon caught up with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime to talk Metroid and why they decided to bring Metroid: Samus Returns to the Nintendo 3DS console.

“We wanted to make it clear that Metroid is an important franchise for us. As we think about how to satisfy the needs to the Metroid fans, we needed to make sure they understood there was a great console experience coming, in addition to Metroid: Samus Returns coming on Nintendo 3DS.

“That’s what we wanted to make sure it was clear that it wasn’t one or the other, that we were going to support both of our platforms with a great new Metroid experience.”

“There’s over 66 million of these devices out in the hands of consumers,” said Fils-Aime, holding up a 3DS. “From our perspective, what better way to re-engage fan love with the Metroid franchise then to create a game that’s playable on 66 million devices, and then follow along with a Metroid experience on Nintendo Switch, when at that point the install base for that system will be significantly higher than what it is today.”

    If only Pokemon fans understood this…

      1. There are still people who are salty that a game called Pokemon Stars isn’t coming to NS this year tho

  2. Pfffft, please. It’s only this way because of the Federation Farce Fiasco- they realized “well last time we did a Metroid game, it was a spinoff after a drought and the last game sucked. Let’s let them know we actually have a big one planned and this here remake will be the appetizer.”

    I guarantee if they announced Prime 4 ALONGSIDE FF, there would not have been nearly as much criticism. They actually learned from that.

    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4 & Nintendo Switch!}

      Of course, after we discovered some things about how FedshitForce handled Samus, even if it had been announced alongside Prime 4, the backlash & criticism for that game still would have been pretty big as it was with Other M & how it handled the scene between Samus & a fully grown Ridley. I still think if that scene hadn’t had used the flash between adult Samus & little girl Samus and had an explanatory monologue from Samus afterwards explaining why she freaked out, I honestly don’t think the fan reaction & ensuing backlash would have been nearly as bad as it was. For instance, maybe she freaked out because the room gave the feel & image of a colony being destroyed & that the way Ridley looked is how he looked back when she was a child & the Ridley we all knew from every Metroid game was just an older, more frail Ridley so it triggered a case of PTSD that was long since buried. That would have also given an in-game explanation as to why Other M Ridley looks so vastly different from his other appearances: because that’s how he looked when he was younger & the Ridley from other games is just an old fart. lol But I digress.

    2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4 & Nintendo Switch!}

      To drive home the part about the room being a cause for the PTSD, it’s the same way a spinning fan on a ceiling could cause a veteran to have an episode of PTSD because it made them think of helicopter blades spinning.

  3. “to create a game that’s playable on 66 million devices”

    Is there some reason why people who want the 3DS killed off can’t understand this?

    1. Because Nintendo has a history of ditching their hardware shortly after the new one comes.

      I mean, the Wii installbase was even bigger and look what happened there.
