Rocket League Developers Confirm 720p And 60fps For Nintendo Switch Version

One game that has taken the world by storm is Rocket League and soon Nintendo Switch owners will be able to play it. The news was announced during this week’s E3 event in Los Angeles. However, today the developers have confirmed that the Nintendo Switch version of the game will run at 720p and a buttery smooth 60fps docked and in handheld mode. Rocket League is heading to the Nintendo Switch this winter.

  1. Honestly, I feel the reason we’ve been seeing more 720p games on the Switch is because of the Nintendo Switch’s screen. Devs aren’t fully ready to switch between 1080p/900p on the TV to 720p on the touch screen as of yet but I can see this getting an update.

    I believe they mentioned that there will be some downgrades to the graphics, which is weird as the Switch can run the engine (Unreal Engine 3) Rocket League is using just fine. Either way, I’d sacrifice Resolution for a smoother experience overall

    1. Honestly, there were reports of Rocket League not running right on PS4/XB1, so it seems it’s more about team size/developer talent than anything. I’m not trying to rip on these guys, it’s great what they have put together here, but a game of this calibur should run perfectly smooth on an 360, let alone Switch/PS4/XB1.

    2. Just because the Switch supports it’s engine, or rather the engine supports the Switch, it doesn’t mean that it won’t need visual downgrades. You don’t really “run” an engine, it’s just a tool. There is some common code that’s run across all games using the same engine but that’s a relatively light amount of code. Most of what makes the engine is a bunch of tools to make games easily as well as a shader and code libraries.

      It’s likely that the reason that devs aren’t deciding to run their games in 1080p when docked is because they just can’t. For reference you can look at Tomb Raider for the Shield TV. The Shield TV has the same chip as the Switch but clocked 30% higher yet it only runs Tomb Raider at 720p30 and that could be due to shader performance but more likely has to do with memory bandwidth.

      1. Actually, the PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch DON’T natively support Unreal Engine 3 as it’s a discontinued engine. Recently, the PS4 version got an upgrade in the form of an Update to 60fps, so really the Nintendo Switch running in 1080p, 60fps, is still very possible for a feature update.

        The Nintendo Switch is rolling with a LPDDR4 RAM which is more powerful than previous consoles as the LPDDR4 RAM acts like a downscaled DDR4 but it can still outperform DDR3 due to the high bandwidth.

          According to wiki, Unreal Engine 3 does support PS4 and XBO. Though they could just be counting it because somebody ported it to those platforms.

          I just found a video uploaded by Digital Foundry from the month that Rocket League came out that shows it running at 50-60 fps on the PS4 so if their was an update, it didn’t double it’s framrate it just helped it reach 60fps more often.

          LPDDR4 isn’t really a downscaled DDR4. If anything it’s a pretty high clocked version of DDR4 with bus-width that’s twice as wide. Regardless, the Switch still only uses two 3200 MT chips which gives it a max bandwidth of 25.6GB/s which is like 1/6th or 1/8th the amount that the other consoles have available to them.

  2. Would’ve been nice if they included 1080p for docked mode. But consistent 60 fps is really good news 👍🏽

    1. I haven’t played Rocket League but I have played Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars. I loved that game on the PS3 and it is technically the the prequel to Rocket League.

  4. The various play styles of the switch makes this game a no brained for any switch user… Especially considering that the game already has a very large community.
    The Vision of the switch is very clear. It’s designed for competitive gaming and interested developers are getting that message loud and clear

  5. 720p… But 60fps is good, so I guess it’s fine. The game really requires lots of precise inputs which cannot be done in 30fps. But hopefully they release an update with 1080p support on TV mode. I know the Switch is new a few it still has hidden features that’s yet to be discovered.

  6. Another unpolished port. I mean it’s better than no port, but it makes us Switch owners feel like we are getting the leftovers from the gaming industry while MS and Sony are getting the sucking-pig (FIFA Switch vs real FIFA, MH XX port vs new MH World, Rabbids vs BG&E 2 and the list goes on)

    1. How is it unpolished? Other than than it not being 1080p, it’s still 60 fps and has all the other content (as far as we know.) Don’t make mountains out of molehills. They’re not capcom.

    2. The game run unstable on PS4 in 1080p, so you can guess it will run like garbage on Switch if they keep the same resolution. And again, they’re just indie studio, so it explain everything about the bad optimized
