It Seems Doubtful That Cloud Saves Will Be Coming To Nintendo Switch Anytime Soon

One thing that Nintendo fans want with the Nintendo Switch is the ability to back up their saves to the cloud like you can on the Xbox and PlayStation. Speaking to Kotaku, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has basically said don’t hold your breath for the inclusion of cloud saves though they are aware of the demand. Hopefully the feature will come with the paid service in 2018, but for now we’ve got a while to wait.

“I can’t say there’s a solution coming,” he confirmed, “but we do hear the message.”

  1. wtf is nintendo’s problem. doing the good things that your competitors do makes you look even better. hopefully, it does come with that paid service next year.

    1. Sometimes stuff like that is part of the cost of paid services. The only reason Sony offered it was because of Playstation+ and the only way to have it and with that service. People forget that storing data cost money and as someone in the IT industry, it’s not cheap to do.

      1. You do know Nintendo is about to charge yu to play online on switch right? There’s no excuse to leave cloud saving ut as a feature for those who pay. My fucking PS3 has a regular cloud save backup of all my saves. With switch if it breaks RIP all your progress in every game. This is Nintendo stupidity 101 we’ve seen countless of times before, like with eShop titles being locked to one console.

          Ugh… Please don’t remind me that my saves & digital purchases are still locked to my broken Wii U… (I was hoping the Wii U would get a universal account system so I could buy a new one & get my games onto it without having to go through that terrible fucking Wii U to Wii U system transfer. Such was the killing blow that made me give up on Wii U & quickly hop onto the ship that was PS4 before the Wii U pulled me down into the deep, dark abyss with it.)

          In fact, I already bought said new Wii U with my foolish fanboy belief that Nintendo would grant my wish because I thought they’d crush the competition… (Lesson learned…)

    1. He really is not only too conservative, but also uncreative and out dated. They should move him to something new.
      Also they should bring back the IOT/QOL stuff. Like focus on that

        ||I think the name Cloud for such a service sounds illogical, you can always fill the Void with anything as the void is the only thing that’s eternal and endlesd…||

    1. For real. Making it completely tied to the system itself, not the game cartridge, not a memory card, and not a cloud save is archaic. I’ve had friends who have already had to get a new Switch because their system died and in turn they lost all of their game save progress.

      1. Would be nice if they offered all manner of options for save locations. Alas, keeping people tied to monthly fees & combatting piracy seems to prevent those choices, @ least officially. But yeah, tied to the actual system is worse. Ultimately, though, I’m used to game saves being tied to a cartridge, even the system (did the Saturn have memory cards?).

        The digital age has a workaround to back up saves more safely, but unfortunately, monthly fees are typically what a company opts for the consumer. To me, that can be worse, as it seems like extortion.

    2. Exactly. Personally, whether Nintendo incorporates Cloud Save or not, I hate having my stuff tied to yet another monthly fee which, if I stopped paying, is deleted; corporate extortion? Online multiplayer, fine, though PC is mostly free & more a game by game basis (why do “budget” PCs have to charge for online?).

      Anyway, SD Cards, USB drives, etc. are far more consumer friendly. Whether it’s for game saves w/ digital games, or for music & pics, I want my sh** w/ me, & paid for w/ a one-time or final fee, & the files remain in my control, like when physical belongings typically had a pay limit, offered the owner more control, & was actually treated as yours, not subject to perpetual fees, a corporation’s server, or subject to non-local conditions or even internet/network conditions. I’d rather pay off a morgage for a house than perpetually rent an apartment.

      Cloud Save has it’s advantages, but certainly not w/ out sacrifices. Streaming services are even worse, IMO.

    1. I thought we were switching to Discus? This is still WordPress. Either way, I like the look of this, but I don’t like that we can’t see how many comments are in an article. I like to see which articles are getting a lot of traffic and thus worth my time.

      1. Disqus is coming! The WordPress engineers are working on it. They are having problems due to the size of the site and the amount of content. It is coming!

        ||Ambassador Sickr is hard at work daily keeping this base under control trying new ways to remodel and improving, by quantity you are refering to war participants?…||

        1. Yes. I always like seeing such and such article has 34 comments, 100 comments etc. That way I don’t click on any article with one comment, cuz there isn’t much discussion.

  3. The new layout makes is so much easier to see previous news articles and the comment section looks improved. I like it :)

  4. Hmm, nuts. Might as well send in my switch for a fix. I’m sure the data will be fine (the attach frame for the left joycon is a little loose, so it wobbles some. it’s more an ocd thing XD)

    And things were going so well between me & the Switch til now…. I want a straight fucking answer & I want it fucking soon! Are we getting cloud storage or fucking not!? If not, are we gonna be able to do like the n3DS & connect our Switch to a computer so we can copy our save data to something else!? Better yet, I want both so I can have my shit saved to multiple devices & the cloud! If neither of these things happen & my shit is fucking console locked AGAIN, I’m afraid I’m gonna have to drop the Switch like a god damn hot potato & go all in with my PS4. I’m not going through this bullshit a 3rd fucking time with another Nintendo console again!

    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4 & Nintendo Switch!}

      Either way, the hype this E3 gave me with my Switch has been utterly killed with this one piece of bad news.

      1. I think the switch will pay off… eventually.

        At worst, you just jumped in to early. Damage done. There are some good games coming out for it eventually.

        Until then, I’m all in with my Xbox. I’m playing through the Dragon Age games. Origins and Inquisition anyway. Lots of good games for me to catch up on while Nintendo gets their act together!

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          Well I was happy til Reggie’s interview about cloud storage. It’s back to waiting in the corner for Nintendo to catch up with everyone else. So I won’t be getting Super Mario Odyssey or anything else for Switch til next year when that paid online hopefully has everything I want. If it doesn’t, I’m done. I’m selling Switch & going all in with PS4. I’m tired of dealing with my stuff being console locked.

          1. Well, with Switch shortages, you might just be able to recover a high percentage of what you invested.

            I hope it works out, but if not, I totally understand. Maybe come Metroid 4, Nintendo will have it all worked out. of course, depending on how long that is, I may decide to upgrade my Next Box as well… although to be honest, I’m a hardcore Metroid junkie… so I my self-control will probably topple like a house of cards when Metroid gets released. x.x

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          With dumbshit Reggie spewing his usual pro-Nintendo, anti-consumer bullshit, I don’t have to try as it comes mighty easily. *throws him some lotion* There. You’re gonna need that since Reggie’s body is ready for your body in his bed.

            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

              Well his body is always ready according to memes.

      2. I have to agree with Brandon. Reggie has nothing to do with it. Reggie is an ignorant, robotic slave that spews whatever crap he is being fed through his earpiece or that was pre-programed before his speech. He has all the power of a potato and can’t cause or fix anything. A cardboard cutout would provide more intellegent feedback than the mouth of Sauron.

  6. I feel like this is something only 25% of even hardcore gamers actually use AND care about, but they’re going to scream about it as though it’s an essential function of the machine that everyone demands. I’ve had Cloud storage through PS+ for the better part of a decade. It’s been thoroughly useless, and if anyone is a real customer for this, I would be the target customer.

    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4 & Nintendo Switch!}

      Save data is once again locked to the damn home console for the 2nd straight Nintendo system in a row (3rd straight system in a row if you count the Wii locking games-with-an-online-component’s save data to the system.) So I’d say it’s a pretty fucking essential function! But go ahead. Pretend that doesn’t matter so you can damage control the lack of cloud storage because YOU don’t use it. (Typical self-centered “if I don’t use it, it doesn’t matter so fuck those that do” bullshit.) But that’s okay. It’s your opinion even if it is driven by complete selfishness. It’s not like the function would actually hurt you & could only be beneficial to those that might actually WANT to use it.

    2. Cloud saves have saved me on more than one occasion where my systems have broken and I lost all data. I’ve had friends whose Switches have broken and they lost all save data. At least let us put save data on the memory card instead of tying it to the system. Keeping it tied to the system is the stupid part.
