Nintendo Switch Must Support Cross-Platform Play If Final Fantasy XIV Comes

Online gaming publication Kotaku recently had the opportunity to meet up with Final Fantasy XIV’s Director Naoki Yoshida. He informed the site that if Final Fantasy XIV does ever come to the Nintendo Switch it would need to support cross-platform play. Mr Yoshida naturally wants the game to come to as many platforms as possible and wants to come to some sort of an agreement before he unleashes the game on Nintendo Switch.

“I’ve said this on several occasions, but it hasn’t changed. We would love for as many players to be on FFXIV as possible.

Conversations have been had with Mr. Phil Spencer of Microsoft, and the upper management teams of Nintendo. But I have proposed a condition every time I speak with any platform manufacturers. It’s that the game has to have the capability of cross-platform play.

Of course with an MMORPG, once it launches and starts going into live services and operations, there will be a community. No matter how small it dwindles down to, we have to be responsible for taking care of those communities. It would become an obstacle if the first-party or manufacturer changed how patches are being implemented or online regulations. Some of our external parties’ regulations don’t have MMORPGs in mind in terms of how they’re regulating their online activities. Those can become a hurdle when we consider operating FFXIV for an extended period of time, and so when I talk to those first-party companies, I ask them, ‘Do you have the capability to prepare for that, do you have the resolve that you’re going to make sure to take responsibility and take care of those, do you have that willingness?’

If we are able to come to some sort of agreement, a handshake so to speak, or if it does end up being that unfortunately we can’t do a handshake with Final Fantasy XIV, either way we’ll make sure to communicate with our players. But we have been tenacious—we’ve been trying to keep at it and be persistent about our conversations.”

  1. In lieu of a Dragon Warriors X western port… I’d definitely play this. Just wish more publishers would just give the Switch a chance rather than saying, “Oh, we’ll wait and see how it does first,” then porting older games to the Switch and wondering why the adoption rate for said older games seems lower than expected.

    1. Yes I agree. Whatever you did Sickr you have fixed all the issues I previously had with the site with the exception of the reply problem. So thanks and Good Job!

  2. So wait a minute, this doesn’t make any sense. The game is on PS4 and not Xbox or Nintendo Switch, right? And the developer said it MUST have cross platform play to be on a console right?

So why is FF14 on the only system that does not support cross platform play? lol Both the Switch and Xbox have already demonstrated cross platform play. Sony has not, with the exception of PC.

    1. I think that was stipulation at first. It had to support cross play between PC and said platform. SONY was all for It since they were getting their asses kicked, MS on the other hand said no, this was during the PS2 days if im correct.

Fast forward to FF14, Naoki had the same stipulations. Sony said yes again, but Mattrick decline. I dont think the thought of cross play between platform was even talked about back when FF14 released, at least not during the vanilla version.

    2. I was wrong lol. The reason for the the og XBOX not having FF11 is because of the small hard drive.

The reason for the 360 not having FF14 is because of disagreements between MS and SE, From what ive heard though, its because of the whole cross platform thing. The XBO just never got it.

    3. It sucks too that Sony isn’t showing support for Cross-Play, I’ve heard people say that FF14 is one of the only Cross-Play games, but that’s only with PC Gamers, I think it’s over SquareEnix’s own servers and they made to where you can play with PC players, but Sony themselves probably wouldn’t allow it with any other game. It also sucks that SquareEnix won’t just release FF14 for Xbox One, I know people with X1’s who want to play 14, but can’t play because it’s not on there, hopefully they will and we’ll able to play on all major platforms, but I’m not holding my breath

      1. Sony has a ton of cross-platform cross-play games on its various platforms. FF XIV isn’t one of the only ones. Sony was all for it in the past but everyone else basically rejected the idea back then. Now everyone else wants it and Sony is rejecting it from other console manufacturers.

    4. That’s the point I was trying to make. No way would Sony allow cross platform play with other consoles. Not when they have FF14 as a console exclusive for the PS4.

So the developer saying he wouldnt develop for Xbox or Switch without cross platform play makes no sense. It’s a catch 22 that he created. He’s just found a sneaky excuse to tell people why he isn’t going to develop for other platforms.

  3. If people want their game, they will get the system it is being offered on. Even if it were on the Switch, it would release at the same time a 1st party game does. First party sells better, all the time. Last FF I played was 8. Cross play is them trying to make the same game for all systems with as little work as possible. Completely reliant on pvp and no good AI. Single player campaign all the way!

    1. I would normally agree but ff14 is actually pretty good. The game lacks any real challenge until end game though. That’s its biggest flaw. Would still be fun on the Switch though.
