Here’s Liam Robertson’s Metroid Wii U & 3DS Case Study Video

Video game researcher Liam Robertson has posted a new video looking into MercurySteam’s Metroid plans, which included a pitch for a Metroid game on the Wii U that they made 2 years ago, along with different ideas they had for the 3DS at the time. It turns out that a new IP from MercurySteam would come out of this entire thing, along with what would eventually be Metroid: Samus Returns. We’ve included the video down below, so feel free to check it out.

If they had gone with a remake of Super Metroid, it better have been for home console & it better have been the best thing ever.

    1. Super Metroid IS the best thing ever, it aged like a god, it literally doesn’t need a remake, and if they did make a remake of it, they would have just screwed the original formula with the new Fusion/ZeroMisson/OtherM/SamusReturns stuff and would have made it an inferior product….

I think it could use an HD remaster at least. Nothing else need not be changed.

    2. Metroid 2 came out during a time where the Metroid series wasn’t that well known outside of a circle of friends who just talked about it and junk.

Plus, it came out on the GameBoy of old and due to its green screen and no other way to put maps in a small handheld.

It was considered the black sheep of the franchise up before Other M took its spot.

From what the remake trailer had shown. It looks like the game is adding new things into that title while remaking some of the stuff in 3D to make it feel stand out kinda like the other Metroid remake for the GBA.

It was also the last game the creator of the Gameboy himself made before his death.

I think it’s more than an honor to remake an old classic and give it new life with a coat of paint to boot.

I’m glad they went with Metroid 2 over Super. It deserved the Zero Mission treatment more than Super Metroid, that’s for sure.

        1. I do hope they also plan a future Metroid game after fusions since that was the last main Metroid title in the series. (At least in the timeline of the games lore.)

      2. Agreed- I played some of Metroid 2 on 3DS Virtual Console; it hasn’t quite aged well. Samus Returns is a day-1 pickup for me; hell, I might just download it since I know I’m gonna play it.

      3. Actually, that creator made Super Metroid too before leaving Nintendo and getting in a car accident….

    3. After seeing the cinematic fight with Mother Brain from Other M, I had an idea for Super Metroid to be remade in the style of Metroid Prime. Keep the entire world layout the same, just make it 3D and first person. Could be pretty cool.

  2. Looks like Nintendo screwed themselves out of another exclusive and we won’t be seeing RotBP on Nintendo’s platform ever :(
Way to f!@# another relationship with another 3rd party dev Nintendo, you’re really hittin ’em outta the ball park this gen:/
Mercury Steam will release that one remake on the 3ds and never give Nintendo’s platform a second thought, just like Capcom and other 3rd party devs are doing now.

    1. Good. After Lords of Shadow and the 3DS game, it’s cool that we’re getting the one product Mercury Steam is less likely to fuck up.

  3. Hmm, so it’s not that developers didn’t want to develop for the Wii U. Nintendo just didn’t want to throw money into a pit. Which makes sense, but damn, did it fuck us Wii U owners over.
