Nintendo Believes That 4K Has An Extremely Limited Audience

  1. In the coming 2 years Nintendo will release a power-enhancing dock which makes 4k possible. Although I hope they would use the power to make FHD rendering prettier images instead of pushing it to 4k. But I think they will do the 4k, unfortunately, because it sells better…

      I’m really hoping for power-enhancing docks for Switch in the future. Hopefully with increased data storage, too.

      1. Don’t think it will contain storage. I can’t see Nintendo will restrict games to only play in tv mode because it was stored on the dock. They want the Switch’s filosophy to be plain and simple: play anywhere.

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          Well they need to get over that crap. Some of us don’t care for the portable aspect & just want a home console. To deny the option to those that want it is just crap.

        2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          And honestly comes off as lazy & cheap to me.

      2. “Some of us don’t care for the portable aspect & just want a home console”

        I understand this statement but I’d rather have something unique than to have more of the same.

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          I knew they’d support the portable mode. I got it in the hopes they’d support the home console only people at some point, too. But I guess I shouldn’t expect Nintendo to do both since that seems to be way too far of a foreign concept to them.

      3. just buy an sd card lmao there’s no reason nintendo should have to single out people who want to use their switch portably (you know, the people they’re trying to sell the console to) so that you can get storage on a dock

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          They can do both. They should do both. If anything, they are singling out plenty of people like me that just want a powerful home console, not some gimmicky portable.

        2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          But like I said earlier but in harsher terms, I shouldn’t expect such a common sense thing since doing both is a concept they are too dumb to pick up.

    2. That wouldn’t work.

      A 4K capable GPU in the dock would actually perform slower than the internal GPU if it tried to use the Switch’s RAM, so the dock would have to also have it’s own RAM.

      If the dock has it’s own memory, than the USB Type-C port would have to be used like PCI-Express on a PC which would completely change the memory architecture of the system from a UMA to NUMA.

      Based on the prices of discreet graphics cards, the dock would already be at least $200 at that point so the price of getting a 4K experience with the Switch would be at least $500.

      It would only cost about $50 dollars more to add an ARM CPU, a cartridge reader, WiFi, Flash memory, and a power supply to the dock and break it’s dependency on the Switch to make it a full-fledged, more affordable 4K home console.

      In reality though, the dedicated console is the only thing I brought up in this post that’s actually possible. They couldn’t expand the system’s performance through the dock those ways even if they wanted to because all of the USB Type-C port’s bandwidth is being used up completely by the DisplayPort and USB 3.0 data. They won’t even be able to release a dock that outputs 4K for Netflix either because, although the Tegra X1 supports 4K decoding, the USB Type-C controller in the Switch only supports a max resolution of 1440p30 or 1080p60. I know this because I read about the controller yesterday.

      https://www.diodes.com/products/connectivity-and-timing/switches-mux/analog-switches/part/PI3USB30532

      Had they instead used a controller capable of outputting superMHL then they could have at least allowed the Switch to support 4K Netflix.

      And just to respond to Reggie’s statement. Adoption of 4K TVs is outpacing the adoption of HD since the manufacturing of LCD panels has gotten so good that 4K panels actually require fewer steps to manufacture. Chances are, more people’s next TV will support 4K. Price isn’t even a factor since you can get a 55″ 4k TV for $350 now.

      https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889651007&cm_re=4K_TV-_-89-651-007-_-Product

        1. Except that’s not the case with the one I linked to. LCD panels used to be made very large and then cut into small panels if there was a defect somewhere in the larger panel. Now defects are getting low so they can sell the whole thing without cutting it down which is making 4K screens dead cheap.

          If there are TVs calling themselves 4K Ready than it’s not anywhere near as rampant as the whole HD Ready thing from the adoption of HD.

      1. “Adoption of 4K TVs is outpacing the adoption of HD since the manufacturing of LCD panels has gotten so good that 4K panels actually require fewer steps to manufacture. ”

        Adoption rate has little to do with consumer interest when 4k tv’s are quickly becoming the only thing available in stores at virtually no extra cost. The question isn’t whether or not there will be 4k TV’s will be around. The question is whether or not Nintendo’s audience will give a crap about 4k gaming. I’d wager good money that they won’t, and Nintendo is right not to raise the price of their machine to give it that capability.

        1. And Nintendo shouldn’t be appealing just to their audience. As Nintendo fans, we buy their hardware and games because we like their games. They have us and adding 4K isn’t gonna chase any of us away. 4K will appeal to the PS4 and XBO crowd as well as the people who have surround sound systems and stuff. I think people here are vastly under estimate the average person’s ability to be impressed by technology and underestimate the average fanboy’s willingness to excuse away their favorite company’s faults.

          The Switch’s SoC was made with the ability to decode 4K 60fps HDR video, encode 4K 30fps video, and output two 4K 60fps HDR signals. All they would have needed was a USB Type-C controller capable of outputting a 4K signal (pretty sure the dock already can) and made the dock support HDR and they could have at least had the ability to support 4K Netflix or HDR games if they only spent a few dollars more.

      2. You over looked a few things. The 4K dock would cost about 200$ but it’s for the customer who wants it. They would also probably release a updated switch model that just came 4K ready, that said it wouldn’t come out till holiday 2018 so that’s plenty of time for NVidia to work on chips and getting the dock right. Which Nintendo already released several patents that suggest they have at least considered a power dock. Also Microsoft already dues this with the surface book. It’s a tablet, but has additional GPU in the dock. It’s not as complicated these days. Graphics would happen on the dock, while logic and sound, and input would still happen local to the switch.
        Microsoft also dues this with the cloud even.

        1. “You over looked a few things. The 4K dock would cost about 200$ but it’s for the customer who wants it.”

          That’s precisely why it should be a standalone console. It’s way more cost effective for consumers who don’t like what the Switch offers as a handheld and pretty much just as cost effective for people who own the Switch already. It would also be way easier on developers, and Nintendo to not have the memory architecture of the system change between modes.

          “They would also probably release a updated switch model that just came 4K ready, that said it wouldn’t come out till holiday 2018 so that’s plenty of time for NVidia to work on chips and getting the dock right.”

          They can’t just do that. They didn’t design USB Type-C, it’s alt-mode or the USB controller that send a Display Port out of it.

          “Which Nintendo already released several patents that suggest they have at least considered a power dock.”

          They do not have a patent for a dock. The only thing similar is the Supplemental Computing Device which would do peer-to-peer distributed computing via a wired or wireless connection. This is similar to things like Folding @ Home which is for protein folding algorithms or SETI which analysis of signals from space to find patterns which suggest the presence of intelligent alien life. Things like that are designed to do physics computation or AI and Nintendo’s patent suggested it was something that would require a constant internet connection. Graphics, especially 4K graphics require hundreds of gigabytes of bandwidth and 60fps game only has 16ms to finish the frame before frame rate dips so that’s not possible with the idea they patented.

          “Also Microsoft already dues this with the surface book. It’s a tablet, but has additional GPU in the dock.”

          Not the same. That’s not changing up the memory architecture as significantly. PC’s with integrated graphics may share the same memory pool between the CPU and GPU but the split the memory up how much of that memory goes to each so it’s acting like there is two discrete pools of memory anyway. Not to mention the Surface Book also doesn’t use a USB Type-C connection. It uses a proprietary connection that supports sending USB, Gigabit Ethernet, PCI-Express, and a full Display port signal over it. So it has the bandwidth to send textures, geometry, and draw calls to the GPU and also receive the uncompressed frame buffer, keyboard and trackpad input data, card reader data, and more.

          “Graphics would happen on the dock, while logic and sound, and input would still happen local to the switch.”

          Again, that’s how a PC works, not like how the Switch and other consoles work. They all have real UMA.

          “Microsoft also dues this with the cloud even.”

          For physics. And they do that with huge server clusters over an internet connection. They’re also only doing it with one game and only in multi-player.

      3. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

        Damn. I just lost a bit more faith in my hope that future docks will increase power of the Switch… D:

        1. Sorry :-(

          I know there’s people who think I’m shitting on everyone’s parade when I make posts like that, but so many people feel that technology is magical and that Nintendo can do anything while also claiming that Nintendo can’t make hardware as powerful as Sony or Microsoft. It’s a weird double standard that requires a lot of correcting and grounding of expectations.

          1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

            Least your thinking with your brain & not your heart.

    3. If external graphics is viable in 2 years I can see Nintendo and Nvidia work on an external Tegra X2 powered dock and at the same time a hardware refresh of the Switch with a Tegra X2 likely with a 1080p display.

    4. I hope so, they said the same thing about the Wii. HD was really limited, but then sure enough they fell behind faster then they should have, developers pulled away, gamers pulled away and the Wii started to collect dust. That also hurt the Wii U because they weren’t used to developing HD graphics.
      I know it’s a handheld/home system but they should come out with a 4K dock at least by 2018.

      Microsoft’s Surface book has additional GPU in the laptop base, Nintendo could do the same here. Have additional power in the dock that can add enough of a boost for 4K. But i have faith that NVidia thought of this already. Nintendo even made patents for multiple graphics packs for games so it could adjust based on the display your using. Even if your using the 720p switch display, only HD graphics would be necessary so it would make more sense to carry both…..even if it takes up more storage.
      additionally i think Nintendo well also just sell a “NEW” SWITCH. also in 2018. One with updated chip, OLED display, slightly bigger, and support full 1080P. Possibly cameras and hopefully they move the charging port.

  2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

    “Inherently, we want our products to be affordable.” *looks at that then looks at all the things you have to buy for your Switch like Micro SD Cards that cost way more than external hard drives for the same amount of data storage & speed* lol If you say so…

      1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

        I can get a 2tb external hard drive for around 80 bucks. Like I said, they are more expensive than external hard drives for the same amount of data storage.

      2. external hard drives are a dying age, with the likes of the SSD drives soon taking their place how can you expect or complain that a 2 TB SD card doesn’t cost the same as a 2 TB Hard drive, they are more expensive to make, they have no moving parts so logically their price will increase and require a hell of a lot of R&D development to get such a high capacity into a small place, there are work arounds, where you can actually plug a SSD drive or even a HDD drive into a switch if you are that passionate about it but it is highly inconvenient which is of course why Nintendo chose to run its platforms storage and games on a method that should have been industry practice by now, all these consoles selling under the name ‘Next Gen’ are lacking the ambition and industry momentum that Nintendo takes risks on every time they release a new system, instead of releasing a slightly better box with a different skin, be happy that this company actually tries to give you something new.

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          Then it’s a good thing I got my PS4 for any game that isn’t exclusive to Switch so I don’t have to deal with it. Nintendo has effectively made me hate different & unique when it comes to technology for the foreseeable future.

      3. Tthey cant get everything right, the main difference between a company like Nintedo and the likes of Microsoft and Sony are simply size and profitability, yes all 3 are big in size but its obvious which is smaller, Microsoft and Sony wont make any profit on selling their systems, they fit it with the latest ‘console’ bells and whistles knowing they are losing money every time the sell a box, they recuperate their cash and more by their 3rd party titles, making a license agreement every time a game joins the system is a lucrative business in the long run, Nintedo on the other hand doesnt have that strong 3rd party support, it hasnt had it for a while, because that 3rd party support has gone they are forced to sell at a profit, so they have to innovate specific areas on become lacking behind on others , its the only way they can stay up, the only reason you hate their verson of different and unique is because it cant compete with the heavy hitters, its no match to a PS4 but like every product power isnt everything, its why Nintendo are always a generation behind (however i think this time they are at the forefront of the type of mobile processing that we will most likely see a lot more often) parts are cheaper once the big cats move on, they know they can’t compete.

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          They can compete. They just don’t want to. They have sadly grown accustomed to being a secondary video game machine when they could be back on top again. Before Wii, they had the strongest systems. The only reason Gamecube lost was because the PS2 was more convenient & cheaper than buying a dedicated video game machine & a dvd/cd player. That & they foolishly went with small freaking discs. Of course, they fucked up before that with the N64 when they stuck with cartridges because they underestimated the disc format. Saying power doesn’t matter is only convenient these days when people want to defend the current state of Nintendo. If motion controls didn’t become a fad, the Wii would have been crushed by the power of the other two systems. Wii U is proof that the Wii was only successful because they got lucky with motion controls turning into a fad as the PS3 & Xbox 360 were right behind the Wii once they had their own motion controls. Instead of using this failure to make their next system powerful, convenient, & with optional gimmicks, they double downed on the gimmick idea & made the Switch portable to cash in on the current new fad: mobile/portable gaming. So far, this has turned into a double edged sword as now they are in direct competition with Apple & are having a hard time stocking the Switch because they are both after some of the same parts.

          But maybe you’re right. Maybe Nintendo has become the small fry that has to rely on affordability & gimmicks to survive because Sony & Microsoft would crush them otherwise. It will be very sad if that’s the case but Nintendo made their own bed & now have to lay in it.

      4. It’s not just traditional HDDs that are more affordable than MicroSD cards. Regular SD cards are cheaper than MicroSD, USB flash drives are cheaper than that, SSDs are cheaper than that, and HDDs are the cheapest option.

        It’s the design of the hybrid design of the system itself that prevents these things from being an option. One thing they could have done was to provide multiple MicroSD or SD card slots since it’s cheaper to buy two 128GB cards than one 256GB card.

        I realize you said that you can buy a 256GB card for $40 but that’s not the average price for that capacity. The cheapest I’m seeing one is $150. Whenever I see a SD card that’s far cheaper for the storage than ones from larger manufactures, it’s usually because the cheaper one was a lower capacity and modified to report a false size to the device it’s popped into or it’s an extremely slow card. I even checked Walmart and the cheapest I’m seeing is a Kingston one for $130 and that’s a full-sized SD card.

        I would say the most likely thing you found was not 256 GB but 256 Gb which is 32GB.

      5. This stupid comments systems won’t let me reply to Gary Keighley directly.

        Those third parties would gladly support Nintendo’s systems if their specs were more in-line with the other systems. I think people forget that while the N64 had poor first-party support, the GameCube was really well supported. In fact, even though the XBO has sold 8 million more units at this point than the GCN sold in it’s lifetime, the GCN has higher software sales. Nintendo’s lack of third-party support has always been because of technical specifications and once they started opting to make much weaker systems, third-party support sunk to an all time low. Remember that the Wii U continued to get decently large third-party games in the year before the XBO and PS4 launched. That was the last year their console was on-par with the most recent systems. It just failed to impress because Nintendo was offering those specs 6 years after the others.

        At the point, they aren’t even at the forefront of mobile tech because they’re using a vastly underclocked version of chip that’s been available since 2015 and newer chips are able to offer way better handheld performance in smaller devices.

        I personally don’t understand this thing everybody says about Nintendo not being able to compete when it comes to specs. You don’t need to be as large as Sony or Microsoft to make a system that can compete with their base systems especially three years afterwards. The Gamecube was a powerhouse and sold for $100 for most of it’s lifespan and Nintendo was still very profitable the whole time.

      6. When i say they can not compete with the larger majority I mean on a general characterization level, it can not be denied that the current majority of the gaming community especially the teens/young adults will see Nintendo as a child toy or something of that caliber, unless you are a huge Pokemon fan or from Asia i doubt Nintendo will be the persons first or second choice, saying they failed with the N64 in my opinion is a little hit and miss I mean with the success of the game boy platform who wouldn’t keep it, they were cheaper to produce, they showed quality and of course what is probably a part of their company beliefs they wanted to stick with what they know, and yes i agree that all this has been brought on by their own hands and its biting them now when a whole new digital age has formed and they are trying to keep up, ‘myownfriend’ you say some valid good points and I agree with most of them, The GameCube yes was a very big deal for them, but on regards to the mini disks not being a success, i am inclined to dis agree, correct me if I’m wrong but those disks were co-developed with Panasonic with sony pretty much being the kingpin of the consoles they made this format to try cut back on piracy with was pretty big for the PS1, with the PS2 being newly launched a full year before in JPN i can only assume they didnt want to fight for product with that beast, let alone the licensing fees also for each game sold that particular medium, they probably thought a internal medium was the best cost saving option which is probably why the thing was a cheaper option.
        With regards on storage yes they could have done better on that front with more options but i think what they did was ok, i mean they are hardly expensive, i agree that the bigger sizes are but having a micro SD card slot again will be for speed, size and overall synergy, I’m pretty sure they launch or have launched consoles with games preinstalled on a medium right out the box, if they havent im sure they are planning on it, this is just a random guess on my part but is it possible for the game cartridges its self to have micro SDcards of some capacity inside the cartridge its self? maybe they needed streamline speeds, if they had the option for a regular SD card there are different classes, all the way to 10 I believe allowing the user to input a older card could dampen the experience from the system, however as with anything these days there are work arounds, you can get a micro SD to standard SD card ribbon cable for like $1, i personally havent tried it but it would be good to see if it works, if so then you can keep going, loosing less and less functionality as you do, with usb/hdd/ssd converters, most likely same experience just less practical.
        Yes the graphics processing that they are in is of course already commercially available but i guarantee that Microsoft and Sony are watching it very closely, both of them have undoubtedly left the potable market behind, I guarantee that if there is not a switch competitor announced or even in production then that’s just stupid, I’m not 100% but I’m pretty sure the Switch is or is very close to beating the Wii with par to par sales, most people thought there would never be anything like the Wii again, I mean look at Connect and PS Move (or whatever it was called) but they have lets face it flopped, I hear people saying the Wii was a fad, i disagree, it corner stoned a market that every games company dreams of, EVERY market, it brought the old and the young together with simple tech and what was a stick that had some correlation to the game, allowing a pensioner play golf with their grandchild in a living room with no confusing mess of a controller, just a stick you move was a gold mine, with the success of this being on comparison in sales i bet you they are going to get real competition if not soon but in the next era/generation of gaming, so when i say they are at the for front, I mean in the sense they are the only big company to shine through (with the exception of the phone market Apple etc.) with what essentially is a beefy tablet console made at the fraction of a PS or Xbox it is bound to make their lips juicy. , with the exception of the phone market (Apple etc.)

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          My bad. I didn’t mean to imply that the N64 was a failure. I was mostly using N64 as an example that Nintendo was making bad decisions that would later cost them up before the Gamecube had it’s flaws.

          Anyway, whatever the case is, I just hope Nintendo can sustain it so I can at least still enjoy their exclusives on their systems. Ultimately, I’m okay with them staying in second place as long as they are still in the running even if I really wish they were in 1st place instead. I just want to view the Switch & PS4 as complimentary devices, not as devices having to compete for my attention as I’m really not into this console war crap.

      7. Right, i just got a 1TB hard drive USB for 60$ at best buy. Your talking about 1/4 the storage for close to the same price. ……yes it “affordable” but not cheap, or the same

    1. True. I just upgraded my NextBox with a 2 terabyte external drive for $60. Can’t get that on an SD card yet for cheap!

      1. Right! I have a Windows phone that can support 4TB SD but they don’t even have them yet. I sure as hell am not buying a 128GB for a gaming system just to run out of space from 5 games. Lol they need to hurry up and at least come out with 500GB cards 😋

      2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

        What brand is it? The 2tb I got for my PS4 for 80 bucks is a Toshiba Canvio Desk.

        1. Umm, I think it was a Seagate. It might have been $75. Sounds like you paid about the same! I hope mine was decent. I know it was USB 3.0. Xbox requires high speed drives to play games off of.

  3. As cool as 4k is, I really don’t care for it because it’s the last think I notice when I actually get into a game

    1. no Reggie’s refuting 4K is proof that Nintendo has COMPLETELY missed the point. Realistic graphics, advanced shadows, polygons, (someone who knows tech jump in and help me)

      Xbox even said the extra power in their new console doesn’t have to be for 4K… it’s massive details and added textures. Reggie’s weak excuse to try and downplay console power doesn’t address all the things a powerful console can do besides 4K.

      Whatever Reggie. Whatever.

    2. That doesn’t really make sense. The more detail in the graphics/ resolution / less i notice pixels the more i get into a games feeling. And 4K is even more wide then”wide screen” 16:9

      Granted not everyone has a 4K tv, but they are already under 1,000$ and this holiday a lot of people well be upgrading.

  4. I can agree with this. 4k may be coming into more homes but it’s still a very limited audience and it needs more time to get into more homes before it can be a standard. PS4 and XBOx may be doing this but I just think that for right now,4k is nice but it isn’t essential to gaming.

    1. I agree, it’s not essential, but all the things a 4K console can do besides 4k is very essential.

    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

      True. It’s not like any games are true 4K.

    2. Yep. I upgraded to a 55″ 4K for less than $400. Drop the frills and 4K will be the new Norm soon.

  5. I think that the article titles from now on should differentiate between what Nintendo of Japan says and what Reggie says. I think I speak for more than a few people when I say that the words and thoughts of one are more noteworthy than the other.

    Having said that, he’s not entirely wrong. While 4K will eventually replace 1080p as the standard resolution, the majority of consumers haven’t moved on to 4K yet. I’ve heard a lot of people say that the only reason they haven’t considered upgrading to Pro or 1X is because they don’t have a 4K tv. There’s really no need for Nintendo to jump the gun on 4K yet.

    1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

    2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

      To those people, I suggest not to upgrade for 4K but for the better load speed, HDR, etc. I plan to get myself a PS4 Pro at some point for those things in particular. (And it doesn’t hurt that I got a 4K television already. lol) I’ll give the original PS4 I got to my kid once I get Pro.

      1. optimization is said to be worse with the pro, it isn’t uncommon for a lesser powerful system to beat its younger brother, if games have been built solely for a system in mind as most console games are, especially exclusives, other products in its line up wont be as accustomed to preforming at the level expected, sure load times mat be better but there could also be stabling issues with anything hardware wise running out of the ordinary.

      2. @Gary Keighley Optimization is said to be worst for some games when the games release. To those games that most have complained have since been patched and are runnimg better.

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          You’re confused. I’m giving my son a PS4, not an Xbox One.

            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

              Such a troll response: “exposed!” Only idiots that think they’ve won an internet battle say such a thing. *shrug* Whatever, though.

                1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

                  As much as I’d love to continue this fun little back & forth, I got pizza to eat, music videos to listen to, WWE Raw to prepare for. But I will leave with this! When Xbox goes under, we’ll be taking Phil Spencer to replace Reggie as NoA CEO. Ciao!

  6. I don’t think the typical consumer cares *that* much about 4K. I think Nintendo are fine to ignore it for now. They may do a PS4 Pro/Xbone X and release an iteration of the Switch that supports it later when that can be done for an appropriate cost, if the consumer base demands it.

    1. No one expects it from Nintendo. When everyone else was doing 720p/1080p, Nintendo was still rolling out RCA cables. At the moment it isn’t something I’d stress. They have other things to worry about. Until I can backup game saves, I have zero interest in the Switch. I don’t know how you even ship without that.

      1. that time spent in RCA cables did significant damage to their reputation, and they have not fully recovered. And they won’t if they keep up downplaying power.

  7. Fair enough, but I hope they are still at least researching the technology somewhat. They had the same thought process with HD TVs. It didn’t matter in the end, but you don’t have to be late for everything, Nintendo.

    1. Making a true 1080p vs 4K comparison then shrinking the image defeats the purpose, mainly because youre changing the resolution on the image and its no longer a 2160p image.

      1. Personally I’m not interested about 4K. Even now I see videos at 480p and play videogames with an old TV that can let at max see videogames at 480p, and still I’m enjoying videogames.

  8. I think Its more important to make a system that can run every game in a smooth 60fps than one that can run games in 4k at 30fps. Maybe do 1440p 60fps, or do an upscaled 4k at 60fps if possible. But I’d MUCH rather have a higher framerate than a higher resolution.

    1. Well, the Wii DID end up being very succesful, despite not having HD graphics, so they weren’t entirely wrong there. While PS3 and Xbox 360 were also strong in that generation, proving that a demand for HD graphics definitely existed, Wii was overall the more succesful console and clearly showed that HD graphics weren’t absolutely required for a succesful console. The same goes for Nintendo Switch, really. 4K is all nice and there does exist a demand for 4K technology, which means that the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X will probably find their market, yet the Nintendo Switch still proves that 4K isn’t needed to make a console succesful and that there is still a gigantic market looking for entirely different things.

      1. Yes but Wii had far fewer software sales than the other systems. Software sales were literally in the reverse order of consoles sales that generation. That’s why Sony and MS didn’t change up their strategy and instead opted to go after specs which was a huge deciding factor in the success of systems before and the PS4 has proven that’s still true.

      2. It always seemed like Nintendo was going somewhere with the idea of the Wii. Almost like VR was their intent in the future. VR did seem like the next evolution of the Wii. But what came after the Wii? The Wii U. VR was just too costly in the end, and they aren’t willing to sell at a loss.

      3. “Yes but Wii had far fewer software sales than the other systems.”

        Well, “far fewer” isn’t quite right. If we take VG Chartz to be at least a rough estimate, the software sales weren’t too far apart.

        Xbox 360 (X360) 1,006.72
        PlayStation 3 (PS3) 974.05
        Wii (Wii) 965.78

        Note that, according to VG Chartz, there were actually LESS games released on Wii, so you could argue that the Wii actually had higher sales “per title”.

        Even leaving that aside, the lower sales on Wii can easily be explained via two factors:

        -The majority of releases on Wii were shovelware, and few people really buy shovelware, whereas at lteast in the third-party department, Xbox 360 and PS3 actually had a lot of strong titles.
        -Most people who buy Nintendo consoles do it mainly for Nintendo games, and the charts clearly reflect that. If we look at the top-selling games on each of the three platforms, we can see that on the Wii, there are almost only Nintendo games in there, and if we compare those to the top-selling games on PS3 and Xbox 360, the games on Wii have, on average, sold better.

        For those reasons, saying “the Wii had far fewer software sales” really isn’t quite accurate. If anything, the Wii had fewer third-party software sales.

        Oh god! Don’t remind me how shitty it looked on the Wii U with HD quality! D:<

        1. It’s sad. I want to play it again so bad, but it hurts my eyes to play it now. I’ll have to pay for it again when it gets re-read in HD some day. X.x

      2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

        And I remembered! Ew! Oh god! My eyes!

  9. I do not know a single person who ever played a game in 4K or watched a movie in 4K (except in cinema)!

    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

      At my closest Wal-Mart, they got those curved Samsung 4K televisions around 50-60 inches for just a little under 500 bucks. That’s pretty cheap compared to the one that Sony has for over 900 bucks. I intend to get it when I get the money.

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          I’ve become a Toshiba fan myself but that Samsung telly looks nice. And it’s the cheapest one I’ve seen at Wally World.

        2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          Well the cheapest one I like, anyway.

    2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

      It may even be cheaper when I do get up to 500 bucks.

    3. you can get a 32in HD tv for about $120.
      Or a 40in 4k for about $250.

      You arent getting a top of the line TV either, but the resolution is there. TV’s really arent that expensive anymore, and it seems every year more and more are getting them, specially during black friday or special days where they go onsale. The whole “limited early adopter” argument will only work so long. What somewhat worries me (and I say somewhat because this is also a handheld, and in that aspect it has AMAZING graphics) is that 4K can become a stand within the next year or 2 while the Switch is at its peak.

    4. If you have been saving for years and you only have a little over $200, maybe gaming isn’t the hobby for you. :/ That’s less than 4 games right there. Unless…. are you a minor? :/

      1. I spend too much on everything else. I can never spare any more than $25 a month to add to my TV fund. And I even had to take it back out a few times for other things I needed. And I WISH I was a minor. I’m probably older than any of the regulars on this site.

  10. Screw 4k. It seems the more graphics they put into these consoles the less games a console has in its 5 year life cycle.
    Gamecube had Pikmin 1 and 2.
    Taking too damn long to make.
    Wii had Galaxy 1 and 2.
    When the next time a Nintendi console can get two sequels again?

    N64 had Banjo-Kazooie, Tooie and Dk64 by Rareware.
    The more graphics the less games.

    Didnt N64 and Gamecube have 2 Zelda titles?

    Didnt Gamecube have Re 0-4?

    Ok. Get more graphics down to a sequel a generation.

    SNES had two Mario tittles. And 3 DK tittles.

    More power less games.

        1. I don’t have the time to care if they rhyme! To be concerned of rhymes at this time is assinine!

        1. I’m not sure how true that is. All things have had to scale. Programmers, computers, and writers.

          1. I guess you right drybones. Maybe it is just what I witnessed alone. Anyway Im going yo thr gym, time tolose weight and get toned. See ya later Mr. BONES.

            1. You only have one body. Take care of it and have fun at the gym! I have become great at playing my 3DS while on the elliptical. Makes Cardio time fun time!

    1. Well between that and how they failed horribly with its online experience. Because of their outsourcing, the Wii and DS were stripped of online play entirely too early. They could have gone back and re-released some of these games digitally and restored online functionality in the process.

      Nintendo simply handles virtual console so poorly. They have the option to just blanket us with so many choices, but instead of releasing digital DS games on 3DS… hey how about old Gameboy games one or two at a time? It is like they don’t like money or something. I really want to know what is in their corporate water.

  11. nintendo’s way of thinking is mind boggling. not being at least on par with your competition leaves you out of the loop. nintendo has no idea what the hell it’s doing. I guess they are ok being nothing but a secondary hardware and software company.

  14. why cant they release a non portable console with the same specs for a cheaper price? They released a handheld without the 3d so they give people options with their handhelds.

  15. Pingback: Nintendo cree que el 4K tiene un público muy limitado

  16. Good on them, i think 4K could be very similar to 3D – something that shone for a while and burned out. People are perfectly happy with 1080p as a max for their entertainment. I think 4K will always be high end, not the norm like regular HD.

    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

      4K televisions are becoming cheaper by the day, though. Nintendo better at least be researching 4K. If they are ignoring it outright, it’s gonna bite them in the ass later like ignoring HD did. Or like ignoring discs during the N64 era still haunts them to this day.

  17. Unsurprisingly, gamers are mistaking themselves for the target audience here. Nintendo doesn’t (and shouldn’t) particularly care if WE want 4k games (personally, I don’t care. 1080 looks gorgeous). They care if adding that feature will sell better in the mainstream. The mainstream only mildly cares at best about overall picture quality, as has been shown time and again at market. The only point at which the market makes the switch, is when the cost difference is nearly nonexistent. While 4k TV’s have gotten cheap, 4k gaming has not. Good call Nintendo.

  18. 4K is such a annoying hype word… I have a 4K tv, but gee, if I’m looking at Mario Kart 8 Deluxe I’m already thinking that the game looks really good and licked. Don’t thing that 4K can really make that noticeably better. I have the feeling people only see the difference when they’re showing it side by side. And you know, nobody does that when playing games or when actually using their devices. And they should also maybe first focus on 1080p 60fps first. Just like all other developers before they’re jumping into bigger things.

  19. This is not only a Nintendo’s belief, it’s practically the common sense. A 4K TV is not something that thousands of people can afford right now, and considering how much was showed on E3 about this 4K subject, this audience can be even smaller.

    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

      You have no idea how wrong you are. You can find some 4K televisions for under 300 bucks if you really look. If people can afford the Switch, they can afford a 4K telly.

          Here’s some that are around 400-500 which aren’t that expensive, either. If you can afford a Switch for 300 & it’s little accessories that boosts the price to over 400 bucks and even close to 500 if you want it to be a nice multiplayer family machine for parties & get togethers as you have to buy at least 3 other controllers, you can afford these. Hell! That would put it well over 500 bucks, actually, since extra controllers go around 60-80 bucks.

        2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          Go on Google & look around for 4K televisions in the shopping section. I guarantee you’ll find a couple for under 300 bucks. Since the Switch can cost up to 500 bucks if you get a couple of controllers & one game with it so you & some family & friends can have parties, you can also find some 4K TVs for around 400-500 bucks. Like I said, if you can afford a Switch and/or a game & some extra controllers, you can afford a 4K television.

          Also, Nintendo thought regular HD wouldn’t be an issue, either, only for HD TVs to sell like crazy a year or two later. I hate to break it to you but you, Reggie, & Nintendo are poised to be proven wrong yet again.

    2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

      You people really shouldn’t listen to Reggie. He’s just giving PR bullshit in the hopes people like you will buy it.

      1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

        Sadly, some of you are buying into half of his bullshit. Tsk, tsk.

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          Like I said, google 4K televisions & you’ll see what I said isn’t PR bullshit but facts backed up by proof. What does Reggie have again!? Oh right. Just his word & his word is total meaningless shit. Go back & read half of his old shit & you’ll see it’s been quickly forgotten as he’s now said new shit that contradicts the old stuff he’s said. s/ But no, no! Reggie is totally right & everything he says is set in stone. /s Don’t be a delusional, stuck up fanboy that follows every word Reggie says like he’s some kind messiah. Get out of that Nintendo box you seem to be so comfortable hiding in & maybe you will finally grow up & realize Nintendo isn’t perfect & they lie just as much as any other company trying to make a buck!
