Sonic Mania Sales Will Allow Team To Figure Out The Direction Of Future Titles

Sonic Mania appears to be shaping up rather nicely judging from recent gameplay trailers and hands-on impressions. The Metro managed to catch up with The Sonic Team’s, Takashi Iizuka, who was quite honest about the future of the Sonic series in general. The team will take a long hard look at the reaction to Sonic Mania to determine what direction they take next with the Sonic franchise.

GC: What do you do about elements in Sonic Forces which older fans might not like but kids will? Sonic’s friends, for example. The goal in the demo level is to find Shadow. And, really… I don’t want to find Shadow. I’d prefer he stayed lost.

TI: [laughs] In the past two decades Sonic games have been trying to target a broader audience from kids to adults. And Forces has that same idea, so that means a wider range of characters that we know children like. Even if other fans may not be quite as keen.
But for Mania it’s kind of like a new approach. To target specifically 2D fans. So we don’t know whether it’ll be accepted positively in the market. We’ll find out after the game’s released, and we can figure out the direction of future titles after seeing the reaction.

    1. I very much doubt that that’s what he meant. Not that I think that future of Sonic sounds particularly bad, it sounds an awful lot better than the Sonic we’ve been getting of late i.e. garbage game after garbage game.

      1. While you are right and it’s looking like a great time for classic Sonic fans I know there are people who genuinely do enjoy modern Sonic games and I’d hate for them to suffer the same fate us classic fans have up until now.

  1. Well, sonic mania is gonna repair the series one way or another. I’m sure SEGA developers have other reasons for not to make sonic completely nothing. Besides, I’m still demanding that both sonic titles will sale to a million.

    1. A million is horribly tiny! I’m sure it will easily make it to a million. These games are coming out for all three major consoles (one in a desperate need for games… and more stock) I would be surprised if they both were decent and didn’t sell 5 mill each.

      1. Exactly. That’s my point. Sonic boom sales was a complete disaster. SEGA was not making enough money to save the series back in 2015. I hope both titles won’t fail. I just hope or otherwise, salty fans are gonna lose hope for Sonic. I hope they reveal more stuff soon for Sonic Forces and Mania.

        1. Yeah, I can’t say I absolutely love sonic, but I would hate to see any beloved franchise be dragged through the dirt like this… plus sonic games ARE fun sometimes so we can only hope for the best

  2. Now what sales will motivate the direction of Sonic Adventure 3 (not Sonic Heroes, not Shadow the Hedgehog, not Sonic 2006, NOT SONIC UNLEASHED).

  3. I like the idea of a modern Sonic game but they can never implement it correctly. Sonic colors was great, I liked the adventure series too. What I don’t like are all the new characters they always try to introduce for every modern game. I prefer the originals and shadow that’s it.
