Nintendo has confirmed today that the Nintendo Switch smartphone application Nintendo Switch Online will launch on July 21st for mobile devices. The application allows you to arrange online gaming sessions with your friends as well as chat with them in-game. Here’s the details provided by the official website which has just gone live:
The Nintendo Switch Online smart device app is designed to enhance your online experience for compatible games on the Nintendo Switch console.
This app will initially launch with a limited feature set and will be compatible with the Splatoon 2 game.
In Splatoon 2, the app will give you access to SplatNet 2, where you can see your online battle stats, your gear, and much more. See details here.
Invite friends and voice chat during games
With the app, you can send online play invitations to players on your Nintendo Switch system’s friend list. The app also lets you quickly send invites via social networks and messaging services. When you’re invited to a game, you’ll get notified right away via a push notification on your smart device.
Once players are connected, you can use voice chat openly with friends while in the online lobby and during online play (depending on the game).
At first I wasn’t sure about this, but I just had a thought that helps it make a little more sense. You have all of these features built into the Xbox, for example, but when I leave my Xbox, I don’t have access to it anymore and I don’t think about it until I’m at my Xbox again. ( I don’t have an Xbox, just an example) but with this, I can get notifications anytime throughout the day and be engaged in the community or with my friends online without needing to be on my switch, which will then, in turn, make me want to play it more.
There are official Xbox and PlayStation apps that do just this I believe.

Just the subscription service as that will be arriving sometime next year. The online app launches in time for Splatoon 2.
But there’s an Xbox app and even Miiverse had a website you could view on your phone. And voice chat still requires a three wires, a headset, and a dongle so it’s not exactly an ideal set up on the go anyway.
3 wire headset? I just plug iny earbuds with built in mic. It’s not rocket science. Lol

Am I the only one who understands that the Splatoon voice chat dongle thing ISNT the only voice chat method for Switch? I’m 99% sure there’s a much simpler way to chat. :|
Is there a confirmed other way to do voice chat on the Switch? Because the dongle is kinda needed to mix the game audio with the voice chat audio.
You plug your earbuds into your phone like normal. You’ll be able to hear the game audio from your TV/Switch. At least that’s how I imagine it’d work.

That wouldn’t be a good way for me. I don’t want voice chat to be louder than the game or the game to be louder than the voice chat. I want them to both come out of the same speaker so I don’t have to fight with two separate volume buttons/switches.

But that’s sadly not gonna happen with Nintendo’s stupid “being different for the sake of being different” way of thinking.
Both the PS App and Smartglass App do just that. You can even buy and start downloads from smartglass, and with sony do the same, but it sends you to an external web browser to do so. You can chat with and without the app on the other consoles. You dont even have to be playing a game, all you have to do is join or creat a party and you are there.
Im glad Ninty is finally doing the chat thing, but damn, do they always have to be so different? Smh.

Im talking about the app you nitwit, but if you want to be smart about it then yes. The PS4 and XBO are playable on the go. They both have a PC app that can remote play, and as long as you have internet (most phones have hotspots now) you can play your consoles on laptops and even highend tablets ON THE GO. You would know if you actually owned another console.

By the side of Microsoft I can say there is an app on PC and Nokia/Microsoft phone which let’s you connect on your Xbox ID. I never used because I don’t have the Xbox.

The reason is really simple. There is only one in fact.
Nintendo is not making chat native on the console, because they don’t want to have to deal with moderating what’s being exchanged between players. It’s that simple.
If chat was to be on the console, it would be very restricted and curated, pretty much like Miiverse was.
Nintendo is basically putting the responsibility on other companies and parents for the content that’s being exchanged between players. Many players asked for a “real” chat, this is as close as it’s gonna get.
Let me repeat: Nintendo is using cellphones so they don’t have to moderate the content.
If you’re looking at Hori’s terrible solution, you’re wrong. Just use your existing headset or earbuds with a built in mic. You’re the one making it complicated.

I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t mind how voice chat works on Switch. I’ve done that in the past multiple times when playing Smash Bros or Mario Kart with friends using other voice chat services.
Honestly I don’t mind it either. Everyone is flipping out without even fully knowing about it, which is ridiculous. Your phone is always by your side and there are many ways this app can be a home run.

Thats exctly the problem, its alway on me, but with this the battery is going to die quicker now. If I have to keep changing my phone, or be tethered to an outlet it becomes an inconvenience and might not even be an option in the end if thats the case.
True, but we don’t even know how taxing this app will be to our phones though. It’s all the more possible that the app could be an online lobby system that doesn’t drain much battery. Idk. I’m waiting to see before I jump the gun.
I would be too but the last 3 apps tjhat came out of the Ninty camp have been battery drainers. I just cant even believe that Ninty or Niantic will be able to make an app that has to be constantly connected to the internet, and still make it battery efficienct. I should gold judgement though, but it just doesnt seem possible to me.

It’s not a matter of kicking the players in the nuts.
It’s a matter that Nintendo is a game company for KIDS. Yes, there are adults that are playing Nintendo games, but their games are primarily intended for 18 and less, unlike PlayStation or Microsoft consoles.
Nintendo have to protect children. It’s either they allow chat on the console and have to over-curate the content fo make it safe for children, or they offset all the responsibility on cell phone companies (and eventually the kids parents), allowing for unfiltered discussions between players.
If parents let their kids have iPhones, its on them. It’s not Nintendo’s fault.
All of this is a only a matter of moderation and curation. Nothing else.
Quite happy that I have the option to ignore and leave the world of voice chat completely separate from my gaming if I so choose. Other than the relatively rare occasion where a bunch of people I know want to play the same game at the same time, it’s more of a nuisance than anything to have random strangers screeching at me while I play.
The mute all button has always been an option on the other platforms. Screeching kids dont have to ruin your experience.

Yes, but in a small team based game, muting because I hate people or having to mute because someone is obnoxious creates unbalances play. If I choose not to use a mic when everyone can, I’m hurting my team. Besides, people on mics in small team games (I’m thinking of the times I’ve spent playing Left 4 Dead, Evolve, League of Legends, etc) make for the most toxic behavior I’ve ever seen in video games and that means more people dropping out of games, trolling, etc. With Splatoon, I can hop in a game by myself and know that I don’t have to worry about who I play with. Or I can play with friends and talk all I want. Either way, Splatoon is one of the few games where no one is affected by me not wanting to deal with toxic behavior any more.
A lot more plays into effect with how good or bad your team’s outcome is than just voice chat though. I play with it off and on and its never made a difference (with me) mainly because my skill level in shooters is beyond mediocre lol. Also, you never know if the other team is using an external app, just like many were forced to use skype to play online with friends in splation last generation. Yes, you do have a point, but the mute option isnt as big as a handicap that youre making it out to be.

Though I agree that the app thing is a little…meh,it’s not that bad I guess. I never really liked the sound quality of traditional voice chat so I use discord for that kind of thing.

They’re not deluded, it’s their duty as a company to create an environment that is safe for children.

It’s not a matter of “changing things”, it’s a matter of relaying the responsibility to another party. Nintendo need parent’s trust, and in return parents love to know that childsafe environments exists. They cannot risk losing that demographic due to negligence.
With having the chat on the smartphone, a parent knows they can handle the console to their children without even needing to figure out anything outside of basic parental controls (also available using an app for convenience and remote management).
No responsible parent, at least in my entourage, would deliberately hand over their cell phone over to their children without a proper form of surveillance. But Nintendo knows that adult players can do as they please; using an app poses no problem to a grown up.
This has nothing to do about being deluded or not. Nintendo consoles are created with kids (or minors) in mind. Good for people like us to also love those games — they’re masterpieces after all — but those games are made primarily for a minor audience. Those who want mature games and chat know which other console to buy.
Nintendo has no choice but to do that. It’s the “lesser of two evils”. I’m sorry if it hurts your feelings.
Apparently you are ignoring the parental control app that let’s parents actually control what their kid is doing on their Switch. So all this extra stuff is just bullshit if you truly believe it’s to protect the kids. It’s like censoring a game for the fact it’s a bunch of teenagers talking about sexual stuff then going & changing the characters’ ages: it’s stupid. Why censor one thing if you are just gonna change the very reason it was censored?
Voice chat still has to be done through Nintendo’s official app doesn’t it? How does that absolve them from any responsibility? As King Kalas mentioned, there’s a Parental Controls app that could have been used to prohibit voice chat on the system if the parents really aren’t comfortable with their kids doing that. There’s also something called a EULA which can include terms that absolve them from being responsible for other people’s actions through their service. The ESRB does the same thing when they say “Online interactions not rated by the ESRB”. Furthermore, voice chat is offered through a paid service that their parents are likely paying for so it’s not like kids will have access to this feature without parents being aware of it.

They’re just putting up so many unnecessary barriers. In order to use voice chat you need to have a headset, an iOS or Android device, a subscription to Nintendo’s online service, and if you want to use these features on the go, you need to have a cell phone plan that supports tethering.
Hell, in the event that a 3DS game wanted to voice chat, all it would need is the tethering plan and any WiFi hot spot app that makes a non-ad-hoc connection. Even headset would be completely optional is you’re okay with using the mic and speakers included with the system.
Same applies to the Wii U. I remember playing Mario Kart 8 with a friend and he was surprised to hear me talking to him in the lobby since a couple second later I heard “I forgot their was a mic in the controller.” You literally had everything you needed right out of the box.
