Nintendo Says The Technological Leap For Super Mario Odyssey Is HD Rumble

The various 3D Super Mario titles that have all launched to critical acclaim usually incorporate a technological leap above previous games. For instance Super Mario Galaxy had complex physics and Super Mario 64 brought the series into full 3D. With Super Mario Odyssey the new technology at work is HD Rumble, which the game takes full advantage of. Players of the game will be able to feel such things as the motorbike’s vibrations, or Mario’s landing on a metal surface, according to Shinya Takahashi from Nintendo. He also mentioned the motion controls when you throw Cappy. Super Mario Odyssey is out on October 27th.

  1. I don’t see how this is a technological leap for the game. For the console, you could say that. But those are features from the console. It’s not like other games on the Switch don’t have hd rumble or motion controls. And those in themselves aren’t really technological leaps, but rather upgrades to already existing technology.

    1. I think they’re talking about leaps just in terms of Mario games.

      World – 64 – Sunshine – Galaxy – Odyssey

      I still don’t see any real technological leap between Galaxy and Odyssey though, unless there was no rumble in Galaxy 1 or 2; or if the rumble in Odyssey affects gameplay in some way.

      1. I mean in the sense that we’ve had rumble and motion controls in games before. In Mario specific, we’ve had a little bit of motion controls, and doesn’t like every game implement rumble to varying degrees? I haven’t played a Mario habe in a while aside from 3D World, but I assume there’s been rumble in Mario games, hasn’t there?

          1. It’s been a long time since I’ve played any of those, so I don’t remember either. It’s nice to have, but for me personally it doesn’t really add anything. I remember when Star Fox 64 came out with the rumble pack. I thought it was so cool. But after a while it was like “ok. Vibrations. Yay?”

        1. I agree with what you’re saying either way. Rumble, even HD rumble, is one of those features that just doesn’t stand out. If every single game that came out from this point forward lacked any rumble features, I probably wouldn’t even notice.

    2. It is definitely a technological leap for the game. Features of a console take part in every technological leap, the SNES wasn’t able to handle 3D environments like the N64, therefore the Mario 64’s 3D aspect is its technological leap. SMG’s complex physics was only capably processed by the Wii and not the Gamecube, therefore it is a technological leap. Technological advancements or leaps are not just limited to in-game aspects, controllers can also play a part. For your last argument, all I can say is that nowadays, nearly every single piece of technology is an upgrade from already existing technology. An old black and white TV compared to a 4K OLED TV is also just an upgrade, there really is no NEW technology involved in many products right now, so you can’t call HD rumble a minute upgrade.

      1. I’m talking specifically about Odysssey, not all Mario games. And I would say that graphics and being able to handle environments would fall under console upgrades. But that’s just my personal perspective. And as for the last part of your comment, I didn’t say it was a minute upgrade. But when I see the word leap, I think of something huge, which I also don’t see being the case. Again, just my point of view.

    1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

        1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

          ||Regarding that bone creature, unlike the Boy, I don’t tolerate its Anti-Nintendo/Hateful Homophobic nature and Nintendo doesn’t either, once it steps over the line, it is history as I have Sickr and another Ambassador ready to hammer it whenever they judge it to be so…||

                          1. Jaded Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch! Just need cloud storage, add external hard drive support, & to eliminate the need for that stupid Nintendo Switch Online App on smartphones.}

                            From the movies that Burton kickstarted, Forever was the only salvageable sequel after Returns.

        2. people sem unable here to distinguish rumble from hd rumble

          rumble is rumble hd rumble is ACTUAL FEEDBACK

          simple logic he is saying the new thing is hd rumble everything is/has been done before in some way

          the NEW is the hd rumble thats all his saying

        3. And the WiiU had a second screen, but only Splinter Cell, Mass Effect and Call of duty made great use of it. (maybe Starfox Zero, but they really fucked that game, so it’s a wash)

          I guess it’s cool you can feel slight variances in the rumble?

          Nintendo’s issue, is as always, how the hell do you explain or sell this HAD rumble? It sounds lame to me. I’m sure I’d enjoy it, but I’m not excited to try it.

          It’s not like the system even comes with a game to get you hyped for the rumble. IDK. I think maybe it’s cool, but it’s not an epic selling point for me, not for the system or Mario. If the Mario game is fun and has better graphics, awesome for Mario fans. I don’t think you are pulling non Mario fans into converts with this HAD rumble.

        4. HD Rumble isn’t all that impressive to me. Makes me feel like my controls are gna break lol maybe it’s better on the switch pro but on the joycons i just feel like it’s too noisy. I like the subtle little rumble some games have when you jump and land like in shantae but it’s too noisy for me to fully appreciate it most of the time.

        5. Eh, It will be critically acclaimed, then perform under expectations, just like every other 3D Mario. Granted, under performing for a Mario title still beats 95% of the industry flat out.

          Before I get dog piled on, I’m not saying I don’t like 3D Mario, just that it’s never been his most marketable form.

          Mario 64 introduced a sharp decline in interest in the character overall, and lead into Nintendo’s first loss in a console war.

          Mario Sunshine’s sales were frankly pathetic, and now the game is all but forgotten. Clearly off the mark from what the public wanted.

          Mario Galaxy did well (as did all tier 1 Wii games), though not nearly as well as the 2D Super Mario Bros. Wii

          Super 3D World did BARELY beat out NSMBU, but NSMBU was an extremely lazy title, adding nothing new to its series. Shoot, Super Luigi U, the expansion pack for NSMBU sold over half of 3D World’s lifetime sales. This isn’t an admonishment of the quality, I have 3D World my GOTY at the time.

          Odyssey will be more than enough for a healthy Christmas season. But its top end market saturation won’t be anywhere near the classic SMB days.

          1. The 2D Mario games have a wider audience. They’re easier, so casuals and core gamers alike play them. The 3D Mario games don’t attract casuals that much. And Sunshine, while a good game, turned a lot of people off with the F.L.U.D.D. mechanics. As you said, off the mark from what the public wanted.

        6. Jaded Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch! Just need cloud storage, add external hard drive support, & to eliminate the need for that stupid Nintendo Switch Online App on smartphones.}

          I for one am excited for the HD Rumble in Super Mario Odyssey. Now I finally get to test it out for myself. Hopefully it doesn’t turn into a total letdown.

        7. Ever since I’ve heard of “HD Rumble”, I’m kinda curious as to how much difference it really makes. I’ll look forward to trying it out. If I ever get a Switch.

          1. Jaded Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch! Just need cloud storage, add external hard drive support, & to eliminate the need for that stupid Nintendo Switch Online App on smartphones.}

            I’m also curious as to how much difference it will make which is one reason I’m really excited for a chance to try out HD Rumble. (I still wish it would have been with Breath of the Wild but we can’t have the two versions being unique to their consoles for some stupid reason.)
