The Producer Of The Castlevania Animated Series Wants To Work On A Metroid Adaptation

Adi Shankar is the producer of the Castlevania animated series, which was recently renewed for a second season. Shankar sat down with Nintendo Life for an interview, where he was asked what other game series he’d like to adapt. In response, he revealed that he’d love to do a Metroid adaptation in a similar anime style as Castlevania’s. Here’s what Shankar had to say:

Producer Adi Shankar just wrapped up the first season on Netflix’s Castlevania animated series, and he’s setting his sights on Assassin’s Creed next. Shankar also has interest in Nintendo franchises, as it turns out.

When asked about other game series he’d like to adapt while speaking with Nintendo Life, Shankar turned to Metroid. “Dark Metroid in the same anime style,” he responded.

    1. I would be terrified that it would be another “Other M” situation…

If they did one based on Metroid Prime 2, and kept her a badass, I’d consider it being ok. Samus’ can’t be portrayed weak again… it’s ok if she STARTS weaker, but other M failed to bring Samus’ full circle. She could kick Chief’s ass.

I would like an animation of Metroid, but I don’t trust anyone to do it.

I liked other M i dont see why peole are bithing on about it the origins of ridley’s evolution stages were very interesting. Ok the weapon resteriction was a bit silly but that’s it.

I also loved the Ridley evolution thing. From cute little fuzzball to total badass space dragon. To me, that just makes Ridley all the more badass that he started out as this weak little creature. That stuff & Anthony are the very few things I don’t want to be lost or gotten rid of if Other M is retconned.

        2. don’t get me wrong I was also a fan of Other M, sorta… but what really ruin the game for me was that they did not fully complete the evolution of samus’s character. you don’t take one of the most amazing female characters in video game history, and turn her into an insecure little girl. that was my big issue with other m and it’s a big issue. :/

While I agree that he might do right by Samus, I don’t think the style he went with with Castlevania would fit Metroid. Sure I want Metroid to be treated as a more mature franchise but there are ways to do mature without resorting to overuse of nudity, gore, or cussing. If nudity is to be done, it needs to be done in a tasteful manner & not just done for the sake of showing some skin. For cussing, while words like fuck & shit would be fine, they shouldn’t be overused. Least not by Samus, anyway. As for gore, it wouldn’t make sense with Samus but for characters like Kraid or Ridley then I expect some level of gore with these guys.

Anyway, if he wants to do Metroid dark, he’d definitely have to tone down the stuff he did with Castlevania.

    1. I agree, that was my only big issue with Castlevania. The swearing seemed overdone and unnecessary at times.

    2. agreed. it needs to be done with extreme care. I’m almost too scared to support someone doing it.

    3. I’m right there with you. I was wary of this guy’s work back before Castlevania released, when he made some comments about it being R-rated. I’m not a fan of R ratings for the sake of R ratings.

Hopefully, if he ever does get the OK to make a Metroid anime, Nintendo will supervise the project very closely. I want a mature Metroid, but it has to be congruent with the rest of the franchise.

Not too closely that they hinder his work to the point that we end up with a Batman & Robin type of fiasco. :/ That would be worse than an R rated Metroid to me. After all, even R rated movies can be pretty good & not over the top. Like Scream for instance.

        1. Yeah you might be right. That would be worse. I just wouldn’t want him to add in a bunch of unnecessary stuff just to get an R rating. As far as movies go, I think Aliens is a good example. Metroid is based on it after all.

Without a doubt yes a thousand times yes! the castlevania series was amazing and Metroid in that style would be awesome, About time Metroid got an animated adaption i know fanboys (not naming names) will go ” II Waaaagh,Bzzzzkt Invaild creation not Nintendo,Brrrrkt, overheating II So what if another dev/animator wants to gve the series ashot it’s not the end of the fucking world! It’s just a game for pete’s sake not a lifestyle. Ok games are a great way to unwind but not to be taken as a way to rule your life

  3. Nintendo has already expressed interest in making some of their main franchises into Anime, so he’s got a good chance here. Now, Nintendo would very likely not allow any sort of R rating. They can DEFINITELY make Metroid dark and brooding, and have intense scenes, without going the extra gore and cussing route. They already have a good basis to start from with the Metroid Manga. The games flow into each other, so there is plenty of material to draw from for many seasons, with whatever they like between main stories.

People afraid it will have some kind of “Other M” problems are worried over nothing. That won’t happen. This guy really does characters well, obviously, and Samus is an easy character to do going with source material. I think it would work brilliantly.
