WhatsApp Product Designer Discusses The Nintendo Switch User Interface

Just one of the things that Nintendo Switch owners like about the system is the console’s unique user interface. While some may think it’s slightly barebones with its lack of media features, it’s hard not to argue that its blazingly fast and pleasant on the eye. Charlie Deets, who is the product designer at WhatsApp, has written a small column about the Nintendo Switch user interface and as a designer of an immensely popular product its well worth a read.

“I wish I could rip into this system more and let you know how they could have done things better, but Nintendo really nailed so much of this interface out the gate. My main concern is what feature creep will do to this experience over time. I’ve seen the PS4 start as a fairly clean interface and become noisy and less reliable for the sake of added engagement. I hope Nintendo chooses not to go that route. Engagement doesn’t make a lot of sense in a system level games UI, since the primary purpose of the interface is navigation and control.

I’m shocked this is the same company that made the Wii U’s interface which I remember as slow, unintuitive and far less refined. They seem to have learned from experience and responded with an interface that directly combats the most obvious issues of that design and implementation.

I’m excited about the future of this system and what further advancements will be made with the unique properties of the hardware. Nintendo has surprised me a lot with their innovation and restraint. I’m sure they are just getting started.”

Thanks Cory for the tip!

Edit: Charlie Deets has contacted me to say that he had an in-depth discussion about the Nintendo Switch U.I with Gabriel Valdivia who is a VR designer. You can listen to that conversation here.

  1. the controller setup is worthless. if you have 2 pro controllers, there is no way to assign them as player 1 and player 2. it sets them up, but you have to re-select them after every single match or race. it’s awful and i’ve asked nintendo how to fix it. they say that’s how its supposed to work. don’t buy pro controllers and the joy cons are junk.
it works great if it’s close enough to the router. the antenna is weak too. mine sits next to my PS4 and i have to take it to the router while the PS4 just works.

    1. I thought you could select the order by pressing the Trigger buttons down. Either way, you can turn them on in order. It’s jot complicated.
I can’t say for 2 pro controllers, but you I know you don’t have to reassign them after every match.

    1. I imagine that at some point that they will introduce themes and music. Maybe do what they do with the 3DS and you can buy some.
Imagine having Metroid music in the home menu!! :0

I remember reading somewhere an article saying that the Switch was a breath of fresh air with the simplistic menus and not much to do. We are surrounded by devices that eat away time, mostly doing nothing as they try to catch our attention. But with the Switch, it IS primarily a gaming console, to play games. You just jump right in.

      1. You know my friend, I will imagine if that actually happened now. Besides, technically really catch our eyes on. It’s not about the hardware, it’s the console. I hope that happens as a future update along with the record feature.

I like the PS4’s home menu & I think Switch could do with more functionality on it’s home menu, too. So I strongly disagree with this guy’s opinion about the interface: it sucks to me.

Not that it matters either way since my opinion won’t change regardless.
