Adi Shankar is the producer of the Castlevania animated series, which was recently renewed for a second season, and he has recently spoken out about the biggest challenges he faced while adapting Castlevania for the series on Netflix. Judging by his comments, the hand drawn animation proved to be one of the things that became the most challenging within the process. You can check out the full interview here but here’s an excerpt:
“We also faced challenges within the world of animation as this show was the first in a very long time to use true 2D hand drawn animation, an art form that was on the brink of extinction. In my opinion, 2D hand drawn animation needs to make a resurgence globally and hopefully the success of Castlevania will spawn many more productions world wide. Old school hand drawn OVAs like Vampire Hunter D and Ninja Scroll have stood the test of time because hand drawn anime has infinite replay value. That said, creating something new (based on something old) and building it from the ground up is always challenging. When we started this there wasn’t a roadmap to follow to make this series.”
After finishing the first season of this, I can’t fucking wait for season 2. I think I might actually be okay with this guy doing Metroid. @.@
The Commander is vehemently opposed to a Metroid anime, but I agree, Castlevania on Nettflix was a stunning success. WHo would have thought a video game based project could be good? A little over-the-top on gore for my taste, but when you consider the source material for Castlevania itself, the gore seems appropriate.
Not having gore in a movie or television show based on Castlevania is like not having shinigami like Ryuk & Rem in Death Note… Which is what those dumbshits at WB were wanting to do when they first started working on making a live action American Death Note. Thankfully, the directors said “hell no!”
I’m sorry but this was a awful series… I’ve never been so bored watching an anime… DO NOT make a Metroid
Different strokes for different folks as I enjoyed it immensely. Sure it could have done with a bit more action but the first 4 episodes were just setting up the story. Think of S1 as the first 10-20 minutes of a movie: it’s gonna be boring in some form til the story starts to pick up.
That’s true for Disney, too. I’d absolutely love a new boom of hand-drawn feature films.
I would be a sad panda if 2D animation went extinct. CG features have never clicked with me.
I like both types of animations but I agree with you. There’s something unique that 2D animation has. Even japanese animation series (anime) use the 2D animation and the japanese are know to use advaced technology.
