Nintendo has filed trademarks for the Nintendo 64 controller and others in Europe and it has fans around the world talking about what this could mean. While it isn’t uncommon for companies to refile for trademarks to retain the rights to them, this particular case is interesting because the NES controller, SNES controller, and Nintendo Switch also received similar filings with this minimalist and clean new look.
While this could be Nintendo standardizing for marketing materials or perhaps designing controller schemes for the new, much anticipated Virtual Console, this also may hint at the potential for the N64 Classic being the next console to receive the classic treatment after the SNES Classic releases this September.
What do you think this could be? Let us know below!
It wasn’t long after Nintendo trademarked the Super NES controller that the SNES Classic was announced. So it’s definitely possible. But I doubt it would release this year.
My guess is either switch N64 VC or a N64 Mini is planned.
I’d kill for an N64 mini. Especially if they struck a deal with Microsoft to get Rare’s games on there
Not gonna happen in a trillion years. Better keep your hope up for something else.
That’s a rather silly comment. I’m sure that MS would be more than happy to license Rare games on a N64 Mini for some $$$. The Mini wouldn’t be any competition for MS at all, so why not?
Especially considering M$ can get some money themselves. They’d have a right to some of the profit since they’d let Ninty use what is legally theirs now. The question is will Nintendo go for it.
You seem to think that MS and Nintendo have a massive opposition to each other… they don’t. Now if it was a PS2 Mini and Sony wanted games on there from a developer now owned by MS then THAT’S where it wouldn’t happen.
Considering this, I’m sure they would very easily license the Rare games that were on N64 to be on the Mini especially since money will be involved.
You’re an idiot! MS even had a Halo game in the works for Nintendo DS. There’s no reason why they wouldn’t put Rare games on a N64 mini, because that’s the only way they could still sell the games as XBox owners don’t play Rare games at all: Banjo Kazooie sold 3.6 million on N64, Nuts & Bolts on 360 only sold 0.76 million!
oh thats interesting considering DKC is Rare and was on SNES Mini…. doofus
It can . Even after Rare was purchased by Microsoft they still worked on the GBA and DS. They made a Banjo Kazooie spin off on GBA and ported the DKC trilogy, then worked on the Diddy Kong Racing remake on DS as well ported a Viva Piñata game to the DS.
N64 mini definitely coming in a future near yours.
I just hope you’ll be able to hook up 4 controllers without the need for a hub. But I would take an accessory letting me connect my old controllers tho, instead of buying new ones. This console is very likely to come with only 1 controller, as most games were either 1 or 4 players, unlike the SNES.
I just hope they won’t release the controllers with the old design unchanged. The stick was a mess, they need to make it better.
Oh, and do not wish for Golden Eye 007, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie or Perfect Dark. Those are definitely NOT coming.
What else does your crystal ball tell you.
I love how people keep saying this and its obvious none of them are thinking. We had all three DKC games re-released as VC. Why do you think MS would be against Nintendo? XBOX only ever has nice things to say about Nintendo.
Donkey Kong Country is a series for one of Nintendo’s mascots. Those games were going nowhere regardless of who fully bought Rare. To use them as some reason why Microsoft wouldn’t be against Nintendo is stupid. Anyway, I do agree with the general sentiment that Microsoft isn’t entirely against Nintendo. But make no mistake: they are still rivals & still competing no matter how much Nintendo wants to pretend that’s not the case.
But hey! If Nintendo is willing to share in the profits from an N64 Mini selling while having Rare titles on it, I don’t see why Microsoft would be against the idea! It’s their stuff now so they have a right to some profit of the N64 Mini selling if their Rare titles are on it.
ooooo N64 mini i would love that!!
I really hope his is for virtual console for the switch. I want to be able to play these games on the switch! Not have to buy more consoles to play them on. The nostalgia is cool, but I’d hope they will do both and not leave virtual console out
Yay
Fkn loved the N64 controller.
Microsoft should let Nintendo have some of the Rare gems for it. It’s a win, win if the thing sells since Microsoft will be entitled to some of the monies since they own Rare & it’s games, Nintendo gets money anyways since the N64 Mini will be their product, & the few fans that are able to buy the thing, as the stock will most likely be crap, will be able to play those awesome Rare games without needing an Xbox One for Rare Replay.
But as I said above, the question comes down to will Nintendo go for such an idea? Or will they be too greedy to share in the profits so they tell Microsoft to fuck off? Stay tuned for the next episode of Dragon Ball Super!
Nintendo will do nothing. Rare is now owned by Microsoft and most of the Rare employes leaved the company and founded Playtonic. The remaining Rare developers have different ideas in their mind. If you think the old Rare is still alive, then forget it.
Banjo Kazooie = dead
Conker = dead
Battletoads = dead
Sea of thieves = A complete piece of sh*t.
I’m still dreaming one day to se BK on the Switch but that god dammit day in 2002………. why Rare was so stupid to accept the money from Microsoft and be now a slave for their confusing system and ideas.
You are preaching to the choir concerning the old Rare bit. I know they be dead.
I want to see Rare fails with their latest game. So Microsoft can fired the entire company.
You do know that if that happens, they’ll just lock Rare & it’s gems up in the vault & only let them out when it’s time to make money off of nostalgia if people are craving those games, right? Basically, I wouldn’t be surprised if they do like EA & just bury the company & their games forever til it’s time to milk them for money.
It’s about of Will. F*ck what Microsoft thinks. We want to do this. That’s what old Rare developers have done, leave the company and make a new company that recovery that style of making platform game.
This is something that I call: Courage
Oh & just so you know, it was ultimately Nintendo’s fault Rare got bought by Microsoft since Ninty let their majority stock in the company go as they sold it to Microsoft as Rare itself had no control over the matter. So if you want to blame anyone, it’s ultimately on Nintendo.
I don’t give all the fault to Nintendo. It’s Rare’s fault. They decided to have money for making a better company and making better games. And the result of their choice is making horrible games and let their IP die from developers who doesn’t know what to do with the old Rare IPs. Good job Rare, Nintendo give to you their IPs (Donkey Kong, Diddy kong, Star Fox) for making games on Nintendo consoles, where people freaking love it (Especially me with both Banjo Kazooie and Diddy Kong racing which I spend thousand hours), and what you want was money? You don’t get money on making games on Nintendo console?
You didn’t like to work anymore with Nintendo? Ok what they do is to go to Microsoft because they offer so much money.
Congratulation. You unlocked a different ending. The path of the hell.
I want to know what Microsoft still see on that company which makes one game every decade.
||Nintendo 49%, Microsoft 51%, illogical to keep the share when the Xbots would run us over at every turn…||
N64 classic confirmed…….
Instead of making classic consoles, I want to see the VC on the Switch so I can play all the classics games on the go.
plz tell me the n64 mini is coming out… its my fav console ever
This is far too soon. After the NES Mini disaster, Nintendo seem to be planning a repeat of it with the SNES Mini. Make about five systems per region, wait for scalpers to get their money (even CEX, a physical store, is selling NES MInis for £150) then discontinue the system and move onto the next generation. Nintendo are missing out on a mountain of free cash by making these mini systems limited editions. By moving on so quickly, they are going to run out of systems to make Mini versions of far quicker than if they just waited until sales dipped.
