This week has been a big week for Japanese gamers as the long-awaited Dragon Quest XI was released on both the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo 3DS. I get that the 3DS is really popular in Japan, but really, who interested in 3DS games still doesn’t own one? It surprises me every week.
I was thinking the same thing. It’s sold millions. How could so many people not still have one? Japan doesn’t exactly have a billion people in it.

Well people buy more than one as models get new and old ones break… I believe me and my brother collectively have had 4. 2 original 3ds’s, 1 3dsxl (broke), and a new 3DSLL
Every time a Dragon Quest (or Monster Hunter) game gets published a Nintendo 3DS gets smashed on a table, so people need a new unit to replace the old (dead) one.
That’s the reason why xDS continue to sell that much.
Software sales for Splatoon 2 are wrong, its been reported that the game sold 958k already last week, 648k on its first 3 days, feels like they are adding the new 100k+ sells on the 3 days sells of Splatoon 2 to make DQXI looks more massive in comparison to other games.

But the 958-thousand mark was not for Japan only I believe (although I might be wrong), and these are figures for Japan only.

Or for people that want a stronger version of their already favorite system. Kind of like what Nintendo did with the n3DS for those that wanted a stronger 3DS & better 3D.
yes, but the new 3ds wasn’t pushing for just “4k” (which the PS is barely doing) but added features not originally on the 3ds.
The real surprise here, considering we already knew DQXI pulled huge numbers, is that Nintendo seems to have figured out a solution to the shortages (I hope).
Hoping the same thing. We’ll know for sure in the coming weeks.
ADDNL: Just ran the numbers and Switch is now only 3,441 units behind the 3DS for week 22 (from launch) with aligned launches!
