Splatoon 2 Players Claim The Ketchup-Versus-Mayo Splatfest Was Rigged

The first Splatoon 2 Splatfest results recently found that Team Mayo triumphed over Team Ketchup. However, a number of participants are claiming that the latest Splatfest was rigged due to there being a greater majority of ketchup fans in the game. This resulted in a number of matches of players on the same team, which don’t appear to count toward the final tally of wins. The following explanation comes from a member of Team Ketchup:

You’ll note that ketchup (73%) kicked mayo’s ass (27%) when it came to votes. Not surprising, really, when you consider that Marina the Octoling was on team ketchup, and everyone loves Marina. The thing is, Marina was so popular that many ketchup players just ended up facing themselves. There were literally not enough mayo players to go around. I participated in Splatfest all day yesterday, and barely ever got into matches against mayo. Instead, I’d estimate that 85% of my matches were against fellow ketchup-ers.

  1. That’s literally the only reason I picked mayo. When I was on Team Ice Cream it took forever to find a match until it finally matched vs another ice cream. That said, I did fight Mayo vs Mayo about 4 times yesterday.

    1. LOOOOL!

People are such babies. LMAO. They’ll look for any reason to complain.

Ketchup vs Ketchup wins don’t count towards team Ketchup scores. When Team Ketchup did finally match against Team Mayo players, they lost. Simple

What’s eve funny about this is Nintendo has made it so everyone wins! LMAO. #EveryoneGetsATrophy. Winning Kings and Queens get 24 shells. While Losing King and Queens get 21.

      LMAO. People need to chill.

  2. This is embarrassing. Have people forgotten how statics work? Of course not everyone in the most popular team is supposed to consistently contribute otherwise the smaller team would have zero chance and there would be no point in Splatfest.

You were facing players of your same team because there were not enough of the opposing team. They don’t appear from thin air. It’s intended that they don’t count too.

What matters is that the times Mayo and Ketchup DID FACE each other, Mayo won more battles. Mayo players played better, that’s literally all there is.

Holy shit these people need to go back to elementary school.

      1. Anecdotal evidence is not evidence. If the system, which ONLY counts mayo vs ketchup rounds, concludes that mayo won more of those rounds then that’s it. Who I’m going to believe? Some guy on the internet that only played a handful or the system that it’s specifically made to count all.

Why would they care about some sauce competition enough to rig it? It’s not even a sponsored contest.

I can’t believe how pissy people are getting over a Splatfest.

      2. Why are you so salty man? And throwing insults? And literally it’s like “I always won my matches against Mayo” (which I doubt was every single time honestly) your number of matches is probably among thousands of matches during the event. Just because it goes good for you it doesn’t go good for everyone on one team period. That’s just nonsense.

    1. The problem with it is that those people that participated must’ve put quite a bit of effort into their ketchup v ketchup matches and that effort counted for absolutely nothing. The Splatfest results should take into count the percentage of people on each team that managed to rank up to Fiend, Defender, Champion, etc.

      1. Then you would make the most popular team automatically win for having more players. And they would greatly benefit of the Ketchup vs Ketchup matches.

There is not other way to make Splatfest fair than ONLY counting Mayo vs Ketchup rounds. It’s the only way to prevent the biggest team from completely obliterating the smaller. Just admit a team is able to play better regardless of the amount of players they had. Some people would be left out from contributing, too bad, but that’s a concequence of having too many people on a side and it’s nobody’s fault.

        1. How would the most popular team automatically win? It’s based on percentage. It would be set up like this.

          Popularity
          Solo Wins
          Team Wins
          Percentage that Achieved Fiend
          Percentage that Achieved Defender
          “” “” “” Champion
          “” “” “” King/Queen

So say there are 1000 total players, 250 on team mayo and 750 on team ketchup. If team mayo has 200 people make it to King/Queen that would be 80%. If team ketchup wants to match that, they would need 600 people to make it to King/Queen.

This system would show what percentage of team members were actually dedicated to winning, and good enough to win, the splatfest.

        1. That doesn’t matter. Losing a match doesn’t lower your ranking. In fact, don’t you still get some points toward your rank when you lose? By taking into account the percentage of players that managed to rank up, you’re giving points for dedication and perseverance.

      2. I rather enjoyed Ketchup vs Ketchup fights against my fellow Ketchup mates, because no matter who won, my team or my opponents, it gave me confidence in Ketchup.

“Wow, these guys kicked our asses; Team Ketchup is in good hands with them around.” Or conversely, when my team won, “We play like this in a real match, Mayo has NO chance.”

Too bad that didn’t happen, ultimately.

      3. That effort doesn’t count for nothing. Mirror matches count towards your personal score and power rankings. Higher power rankings pit you up against better opponents, which are the ones you want to beat.

    2. I definitely didn’t learn statistics in elementary school. But if you’re trying to convince people on the internet that their anecdotal evidence doesn’t trump actual data, you’re doing down a dark and disappointing path sir.

      1. Irrelevant. Ketchup players seem to ignore the fact that they went into this splatfest with a huge advantage. Everyone aside from mayo diehards knew ketchup was going to take the popularity win by a landslide. Mayo had a significant uphill battle and pulled off a pretty impressive comeback. People who think they could’ve turned that all around if they personally just got to play more matches that “mattered” need to have their ego checked.
Also, good ketchup players would have been matched up with good mayo players due to how power rankings work, so the assumption that they would automatically do any better than less skilled players in this case is flawed. That number that appears at the bottom of the screen at the start of every match isn’t just for show. If people truly wanted to take on the best the other team has to offer and beat them, they would take the mirror matches seriously. Not to mention winning mirror matches still allows you to climb up the ranks as well, netting you the real reward of splatfest, which the winners only got three more of.

      2. Its not an advantage idiot, overpopularity of one team means that they can’t have opposite team battles as much as mayo players. It wasn’t an uphill battle and it wasn’t a comeback, it was bullshit, the entire Splatfest was bullshit, waiting for almost 6 minutes for one match against your own team. You can’t contribute to the Splatfest because of the poor management of the developers and the choice they have made to make it Ketchup vs Mayo. Getting more matches in is more useful than popularity, because more people will be able to play than not doing shit. Climbing up ranks don’t do shit either, its just more super seashells. It was unbalanced and rigged, and they need to fix this.

    3. It’s still a bit flawed because team ketchup hardly ever played against mayo, so it’s more time, patience and skill wasted on zero points. I get that mayo obviously won more matches but wow, it was rare I ever fought them.
And if you really think about it Mayo had more chances to contribute because team K was more populated; so as Team K were wasting time with sameteam matches, Mayo were actually contributing with wins.
      :,(

      1. Mayo didn’t get more chances to contribute. The number of M/K games is exactly the same for both sides. Ketchup didn’t face Mayo more than Mayo faced Ketchup. If there were 500 MvK games, that’s 500 for both teams; while more KvK games happened than MvM games, both teams faced each other the same number of times and Mayo just came out on top more.

  3. That’s a good point. I think points should be assigned to the teams based on what percentage of people ranked up.

    Popularity
    Team Wins
    Solo Wins
    Percentage that Achieved Fiend
    Percentage that Achieved Defender
    “” “” “” Champion
    “” “” “” King/Queen

    1. I don’t think that would work. Not only would it take longer to calculate, but all of those inherently favor the more popular side as there are more players who can achieve those ranks. Unless popular vote is VERY close (like, within 5% like a 55%-44% ratio), the side with more players can dominate too easily.

      1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

        ||Most of my Ketchup teams were useless, I had to do everything myself…||

      2. Someone else said that above. How would the most popular team dominate? It’s based on percentage. So say there are 1000 total players, 250 on team mayo and 750 on team ketchup. If team mayo has 200 people make it to King/Queen that would be 80%. If team ketchup wants to match that, they would need 600 people to make it to King/Queen. If one team has more players to achieve those ranks, then they need more players to achieve those ranks. This system would show which team was more dedicated and more capable.

Also what do you mean when you say it would take to long to calculate? The game would just be compiling data that’s already tracked individually.

      3. @RidleySlayer sure, that’s IF Mayo gets that majority, but what happens when they don’t? what happens when the team with least players don’t achieve that many high ranks? Then the one with majority automaically wins. Plus, really, ketchup wins against ketchup, that’s +1 win for ketchup and +1 lost for ketchup, so it becomes 0, it makes no difference whatsoever in the current system.

    2. I don’t think your idea is flawed by basing it off percentages, but rather that it still undermines skill and the percentage of actual wins. People can still climb the ranks with losses and become royalty given enough time. It’s entirely possible they can then go on and lose every single match after that. The game shouldn’t reward this.

  4. This is really stupid. The same thing happened in the first game and nobody complained (I remember battling against other Patrick teams in the Spongebob themed Splatfest). Now, how can you claim the wins of the battles between Mayo teams didn’t count if for every single of them there’s also a loss?

    1. I’m telling you, it’s that Mr.Grizz who rigged it so that Pearl could win!
Typical Bears, always rigging elections for their own evil deeds!
You know that Pearl said she’d build a big wall and make the Salomon pay for it?

  5. It’s not so much that it was rigged. This game was released without any good balance patches

Pop guns – Still have NOT been fixed
    Tri-slosher – too strong
Sniper abilities need to be nerfed

On top of that, the game doesnt match you with people of your own skill. So every game I was in against Mayo I had 2 or 3 teammates who did absolutely nothing.

    1. The matches were based on the score you earned as you won and loss. A teams scores were averaged and then matches against a team with a similar average. If you lost to a team that had a lower point score than yours, your personal score seemed to go down more than if the team had a higher score. At least that was my observation while playing.

As for feeling like you had worthless teammates, sometimes you did, other times our egos make that seem to be the case. Even while I’m sitting there swearing at my terrible teammates, I know deep down that the other team is just out playing our team as a whole. Also, theres a lot of young kids playing Splatoon and I don’t know many that like Mayo but most love Ketchup. So I’ll bet as Ketchup you had a lot of 8 year olds on your team.

  6. I guess Nintendo got paid Sponsorship dollars from the Mayo companies to rig the Splatfest Results. Ahhh, 1st world issues. Everyone on Team Ketchup should sue Nintendo now for take a bribe from the Mayo company lol.

  7. Since it tries to make matches based on skill, most likely if you are very skilled player on the more popular team, you will mostly be playing against the very skilled players of your own team.
On the first splat fest, as I got closer to Max rank, I played almost exclusively against my own team .

  8. They’re idiots! They’re only mad cause Pearl won a Splatfest. They say she’s got Tommy Pickles gums. They also hate her! Reason those idiots are also claiming it’s rigged is cause they’re wimpy show offs who chose Marina’s team cause they hate Pearl! SHUT UP YOU PEARL HATERS! I like both of the Off the Hook girls equally! True, I love Callie, but I like both Squid Sisters equally too! YOU PEARL HATERS JUST DEAL WITH LOSING! Trust me, Off the Hook will obviously be the major story focus for a Splatoon 3. And when Pearl is you guide, tch, DON’T GO CRYING TO MARIE!

SO AGAIN, SHUT UP YOU PEARL HATERS AND JUST DEAL WITH HER WINNING ONE! And you better hope she doesn’t represent Pikachu in a hopeful Pokémon themed one in the future, cause she’ll win hands down. YOU KNOW HOW FAMOUS PIKACHU IS!

  9. ROLMAO SUCH DUMB FUCKS!!! Don’t they get it yet? Its not based of popularity anymore…its based on how many times people who joined the team or in this case, how many actually got on to play or were banned for not moving, is what makes the actual votes, its not based on wins or loses anymore.

In other words, forget it if you win or lose, keep on being solo or teamed…dam idiots lol…I lost and I admit defeat…I got a heft prize of at least 21 super sea snails…that’s what really counts in the splatfest in the first place.

  10. It was damn rigged, I don’t give a rats ass about Marina, I’m one of the few that pick my choice based off the actual damn choices and not which character is supporting it. So it sucks for players like me who just want to support the theme they like. Fix this algorithm Nintendo.

    1. I didn’t pick a team I just played the game and i’m ok with that. You’ll get people bitching they lost or gloating they won it’s like a fucking football match full of fucking drama queens, just play the damn game you muppets.

    2. What algorithm there is to fix? There’s no algorithm here. All it happened it’s that there were less players in one side so not all could participate due to lack of opponents and the only way to “fix” it it’s to put a gun on Mayo’s players head to switch to the other side until there’s an equal ammount of plauers on both sides. Nobody’s fault one team has lesser players than the other.

You are mad a football team of 80 players aren’t all allowed to play against a team of 20 players at the same time. The point it’s to create a fair enviroment so small teams have a chance to win, so ONLY the matches Mayo vs Ketchup counted. The small team winning simply means they won the majority of matches they were put against Ketchup.

If every Splatfest somehow allowed all players in a team to consistently contribute points then the bigger team would always win no matter what.

Why are people acting like this over this Splatfest in particular? This is exactly how thinga have worked since Wii I days. Is this baby’s first Splatfest for many?

  11. Yeah, one of the points is for which team was more popular, the other points are for wins in battles between the teams. If it were any other way, the battles between the teams would be totally pointless!
I would imagine both the Marina character and ketchup appeals to children to a higher degree than Pearl/mayo, which might be an explanation. Personally, I think the design and personality of Pearl is much more interesting, so I don’t really get why Marina is more popular.

  12. I was only frustrated at the fact that Mayo won by a 1% difference in the victory column. Obviously the team with a lot less support will have more power towards controlling how high (or low) the overall win percentage their team will have than the team with immense more support.

    1. For every mayo win there was a ketchup loss, and vice versa. That 1% is mayo beating ketchup 1% more times than ketchup beat mayo. It is as simple as that. There is no “control” beyond the skill of each team.
The one with the real disadvantage was mayo. I find it pretty funny that ketchup players are trying to claim they were the ones at a disadvantage when they took a freebie win with popularity.

The only problem here is Nintendo needs to pick teams that are relatively even in popularity, like cats vs dogs.

  13. Geez, it’s like these idiots didn’t play the first game. There has not been a single case of the more popular team winning since I’d say Splatfest Number 4. The sorting algorithm is pretty much unchanged from Splatoon 1. Look, you wanna win a Splatfest? Join the less popular team. Otherwise, unless Nintendo gets off their buts and fixes it, the more popular team isn’t winning any Splatfests. I picked Ketchup knowing full well we’d lose.

    1. Actually, in the Transformers Splatfest of Autobots vs Decepticons, Decepticons were more popular AND won more matches, so popularity being the death knell for a side isn’t always true.

I remember that because I was Team Autobots and was in total shock when I saw those results.

      1. Not to mention that the way wins are calculated now is completely different from the first splatoon. Out of only three criteria, popularity takes one. The less popular team is at a significant disadvantage now by default, unlike in the first game where wins counted six times more than popularity.

  14. How to successfully Splatfest:
    1. Pick a team based on what you actually prefer rather than which character represents it
    2. Play
    3. Rank up to King/Queen – it’s not that difficult or time consuming
    4. Enjoy your 21 or 24 Super Sea Snails – you’re not losing many if you’re on the losing team
    5. Remember it’s just a game that has no actual impact on your life

    1. In a way that could actually be an advantage for good players. Throwing mirror matches and keeping their power rankings low pretty much guarantees they’ll be fighting weaker teams and taking easy wins.
Not sure if the individual win percentage takes that type of thing into account at all.

  15. Not rigged but it’s silly the way it’s done, ketchup should of won as it had way more people and mayo only won by 1% … Should have averages really lol

    1. Turning it into little more than a popularity contest defeats the entire point of splatfest. Especially if Marina keeps getting the more popular option. Only Japan likes Mayo or Pearl more than Ketchup or Marina.

  16. I like the theory I read from someone else that ketchup is probably more popular with kids, making mayo consist of a higher percentage of adults. It would not only explain the results, but also the childish attitude of sore losers claiming it was rigged.

  17. Do they even know what the term “rigged” even means? I was on ketchup, and yeah, most of my matches were against other ketchup teams. But if it counted those matches as wins for ketchup, then EVERY match of ketchup vs ketchup would be an automatic win tally for ketchup; the more popular side would easily win. Matches against your own vote have never counted, and if they did it would be a broken system always in favor of the more popular side. Grow up, ketchup lost fair and square. The final score was still really close, it’s not like it was a blowout.

  18. I know most people hate the stereotype that Nintendo only caters to kids. But the people crying about this sure don’t help that stereotype, and I’m sure some of the crybabies are actually adults. Which is just sad. Why would they rig a Splatfest? There is no money involved. And as many have mentioned, if you are playing against your own team, that shouldn’t count since the more popular team would clearly have more victories then. And along with those victories, they would also have more losses. It’s not like Nintendo came in and said “screw team ketchup.” Some people need to grow up. If you a match due to cheating or lag or something like that, these are legitimate gripes. Not the case with this. And l don’t even play Splatoon.

  19. Okay so correct me if I am wrong on this but I was in the mindset that if 2 teams on the same side go up against each other, the result would always be neutral because while 1 side won a point for Team Ketchup, because the other side was the same team, that would count as a loss so the win would be neutral and thus, make no difference.
This means that only the Ketchup vs Mayo matches would have any impact and thus means the results will be calculated fairly.

  20. Wait team mayos percentages averaged to about 43.3 but team ketchup had a average of 56.7? Or is the system whoever gets the most out of the three categories. If you ask me it should be averaging because it produces a more accurate result.

    1. Popularity already has far too big of an impact on the results in my opinion. Especially when the popular choice is given to the popular idol. Mayo pulling off this win in spite of that is impressive to anyone who isn’t bitter.

  21. Ridley X3 {R.I.P. Chester Bennington of Linkin' Park. Thank you for the awesome music. You will be missed. *cries*}

Rigged? Or is it broken? The game just came out & they most likely still have a lot of kinks in the game to fix. Not to mention they most likely still got some fine tuning to do.

Either way, it’s not my problem as I don’t have Spla2n & most likely never will.

  22. If they disabled ketchup vs ketchup you wouldnt be able to play the game for ages at a time. People need to stop voting based on who is behind the team because imo there’s nothing wrong with pearl.
Also if you really believe it’s rigged, take a step back and think about what you’re saying. “A vote between condiments in this children’s shooter is rigged!!!”

  23. Do your research, be impartial, and remember: next time you put too much stock in opinions you read on the internet, there are literally conspiracy theories online about fish children and sauce.

    1. Ridley X3 {R.I.P. Chester Bennington of Linkin' Park. Thank you for the awesome music. You will be missed. *cries*}

You also forgot to mention there actually are people that believe the world is flat, too. xD Apparently there are some of these special people on Facebook.

    1. This. Easily the most popular idol got easily the most popular choice. It’s funny how so many ketchup players were trying to claim they had a disadvantage when the exact opposite was true.
