Nintendo Has Addressed The Metroid: Samus Returns Amiibo Controversy

One thing Nintendo fans haven’t been happy about is Nintendo decision to unlock some of Metroid: Samus Returns functionality behind the upcoming Metroid themed amiibo figures. The company has tried to explain and clear up the situation with USGamer and you can read their response below as well as USGamer’s take on the problem.

Yes, Fusion Mode—which will give players access to Samus’ Fusion Suit as well as a more challenging difficulty in the game—is indeed locked behind the Metroid amiibo. This content will not be offered as a separate DLC in Nintendo’s digital eShop. However, there will be a standard hard mode that will be unlockable once players complete the game on regular difficulty. This mode, which is confusingly separate from the Fusion Mode’s own harder difficulty, won’t be locked behind any amiibo.

It was previously reported that an amiibo tie-in for Metroid: Samus Returns will unlock hard mode for the game. In fact, purchasing the amiibo would be the only way for players to access the Fusion Mode content, making it a mandatory accessory if players wanted to access everything Samus Returns has to offer. This is still the case, only Nintendo failed to explain that the Fusion Mode difficulty is separate from a standard Hard Mode. Nintendo’s reluctance to clarify the matter, simply pointing media outlets to the vague Facebook post, certainly didn’t help assuage worries about how fans could only access the game’s full content by purchasing the amiibo set.

In our preview of Samus Returns, we mentioned that amiibo support for the game is completely optional, which is still technically true. However, it’s also technically true that there are bonuses in the game, from image galleries to the aforementioned Fusion Mode which can only be accessed via amiibo support. So if you really do want to see everything Samus Returns has to offer, you will have to pick up some amiibo to go with it. Luckily, the amiibo aren’t tied to any specific account, so you could just borrow your friend’s amiibo to unlock the content in your copy of Samus Returns if you’re so inclined.

      1. He’s not complaining. He’s stating his opinion on the matter. I’m inclined to agree. Some people definitely like to be “victims” and complain when they can. I think I know why that is, but I wouldn’t also want to be accused of complaining by sharing an opinion.

      2. No, he’s definitely complaining. And you are doing the same thing. Attempting to play the victim card? That would be you. “but I wouldn’t also want to be accused of complaining by sharing an opinion.” Preemptive counterattack because you feel you are somehow a victim for sharing your opinion. Please. Spare me. He was complaining. You don’t mention something like that for any other reason then to complain. It is his opinion, yes, but it’s still complaining about other people complaining. Nice try. Well, no. That was actually really weak.

    1. Definitely. But they’re so accepting over paid DLC in any game which is basically the same fucking thing. You’re paying extra money for extra content. Only difference is, you don’t get a free premium figure that comes with the purchase of regular DLC.

      1. The added problem with amiibo though is scalpers and limited production. Most of them only unlock inconsequential DLC too.
        I would say you have it backwards. It is a collectible figure that unlocks piddly free content most of the time, and a few cool features (like Epona and Fusion Mode which aren’t worth the price scalpers charge) in only a few circumstances.

      2. Ridley X3 {R.I.P. Chester Bennington of Linkin' Park. Thank you for the awesome music. You will be missed. *cries*}

        The difference is you don’t have to worry about shitty or intentionally limited stock with DLC you buy off the system itself as the DLC is digital. Sorry but the comparison is bullshit & honestly reeks of damage control to protect Nintendo.

    1. Exactly what I’m thinking. It’s kinda ridiculous they’re locking content, no matter what it is, behind 15 bucks, the largest part of which going into a figure you might not even be interested in. I mean, I’m sure it’s great for collectors and all, but Nintendo is either unable to understand that there’s many many people who would like to just buy the content digitally for cheaper because they simply are not interested in any type of figure, or Nintendo just deliberately refuses to give people a reasonable alternative.
      All apart from the fact that people can’t get their hands on many of the amiibo even if they wanted to, because Nintendo still doesn’t know how to stock properly.
      This whole amiibo business has been a huge mess on a many different levels, it’s pretty sad, haha.

      1. At least we still have an in game hard mode.

        Imo BotW used Amiibo perfectly. All it unlocked was nostalgia bait and the base game had plenty of armor and weapon equivalents to the Amiibo stuff.

    2. Then they lose $7 per sale. That’s the problem. Because everybody will shell out that $12 if they have to. Except when we won’t. What they can’t follow is it’s better to lose $7 than $12. Actually, most businesses can’t follow this logic. Welcome to 21st century economics.

    3. Why do people have a problem with buying the DLC physically? If you buy physical DLC, then you can reuse the physical DLC on more than one device, and you can sell it after you’ve made your use of it. It gives the same benefits as physical copies of games, and, exclusively, lets you continue to use the content it provided however longer you please without having to keep the item on you, or without having to even continue owning it, so you can get some money back when you choose to sell it.
      Also, $40 games don’t particularly offer DLC (which unlocks the FULL game) that is only $5 anyway.

  1. I wouldn’t even have a problem if the damn amiibos were actually available for pre order!
    I swear between Nintendo’s retarded decisions to make as few of the more sought after Amiibo as possible, these goddamn ebay scalpers who keep buying them all within seconds of them going back up sale, and Nintendo’s dumbass choices of making the most sought after amiibo exclusive to certain crappy retailers (Amazon and Gamestop!) who are known to price gouge said amiibo because they are a bunch of greedy assholes, I seriously hate this damn amiibo sh!t!
    I still can’t buy the last 3 Link Amiibo released for BotW because of the damn shortages, retail exclusivity, and fucking scalpers!
    I wish this amiibo crap would just die off already, it was a sh!tty idea to begin with and I knew these exact 3 problems would occur. Nintendo just won’t learn their damn lesson of not pissing of the consumer, this retail exclusive sh!t was the exact same issue I had with Xenoblade Chronicles on the wii!
    Gamestop price gouged that game to the point where nobody could buy it, and now I have to deal with this sh!t again with these fucking Amiibo!
    How fucking hard is it to just let me buy these damn things at every retail!? I shouldn’t have to go through a gauntlet greedy asshole scaslpers or five different god damn retailers just to buy dlc for one fucking game!

    1. Actually, it’s been traditional business practice since at least the 1990’s to offer less of the more sought after items. That way businesses can jack up the prices, and the company can get more profits. Consumers complain while handing over their money. So it continues.

      As for scalpers, I still say Nintendo is behind them, making sure to maximize profits.

    2. Ridley X3 {R.I.P. Chester Bennington of Linkin' Park. Thank you for the awesome music. You will be missed. *cries*}

      Remove Amazon from that. All the high priced stuff you see on Amazon is from people that bought the product elsewhere & are using Amazon to resell the stuff to get their money back while also making a nice profit off of Nintendo & any poor soul desperate or dumb enough to buy the pricey resell. So it’s not even Amazon itself doing it. GameStop, on the other hand… lol

  2. Now I’m starting to think there might be more to Fusion Mode then just the Fusion Suit. Either way at least we have an ingame Hard Mode!!! :D

  3. First we complain that the amiibo don’t give us anything we can’t unlock in the game already – then we complain about a pay wall.

    I like the idea that a figure comes with a DLC purchase. It gives greater value to the figure. People will always complain.

    1. The problem comes from the Amiibo shortages and having little to no access to specific amiibo due to scarcity, retail exsclusivity, Nintendo’s encompentence to restock retail exclusive amiibo, and scalpers like Gamestop, ebay, and Amazon when it comes to the exclusive amiibo.

      1. Ridley X3 {R.I.P. Chester Bennington of Linkin' Park. Thank you for the awesome music. You will be missed. *cries*}

        I think you might have wasted your time. He’s probably intentionally ignoring the facts of the shitty stock so as to damage control for Nintendo.

  4. I would like to buy the amiibo only problem is there’s never enough stock. I’m not going to go all out just to get a little figure. So it’s stupid of Nintendo to hide this mode behind an amiibo if nobody is going to be able to get it

  5. I wish Nintendo would just make a full fledged amiibo game and have all of their “bright” ideas go into that. Having pretty much every single game they make have locked content with things that have stock problems is getting really old.

  6. Nintendo always seems to hit and miss with amiibos… splatoon 2 amiibo support is garbage because it basically isn’t there. Samus Returns Remake has too much for amiibo… and then they get amiibo support right with games like zelda and mario kart dx. Just little bonuses will do nintendo… just a nice reference, an okay weapon, extra little costume, whatever. Just something small but not so insignificant its a turn off to buying amiibo.

  7. Ridley X3 {R.I.P. Chester Bennington of Linkin' Park. Thank you for the awesome music. You will be missed. *cries*}

    Nintendo trying to justify their fucking bullshit. It’s one thing when the zealot fans damage control Ninty’s bullshit but it’s anotehr thing entirely when Shitendo does it. Take your fucking excuse & shove it up Reggie’s fucking ass! I wouldn’t be surprised if this was something he fucking wrote, after all! Go back to Pizza Hut, bitch!

    1. Ridley X3 {R.I.P. Chester Bennington of Linkin' Park. Thank you for the awesome music. You will be missed. *cries*}

      When you fucking learn to better stock the fucking god damn figurines, then we’ll stop bitching & YOU won’t have to fucking even damage control this bullshit. Oh & make it into 5 dollar DLC for those that don’t want the damn amiibo. Yeah. Not everyone wants a figurine. As much as I’d love to have the figurines, I’d love to have the DLC even more so 5 bucks for stuff like Fierce Deity Link’s armor in BotW will somewhat make up for the shitty stock of amiibo for me.

      1. Ridley X3 {R.I.P. Chester Bennington of Linkin' Park. Thank you for the awesome music. You will be missed. *cries*}

        But nooo! I guess Shitendo would rather suck their own dick & damage control their bullshit than give a simple fucking solution that will make most happy. I guess they get off on the amount of anger & hate they get these days. Basically, Nintendo is turning into a gigantic fucking troll it seems.
