Bethesda: DOOM On Nintendo Switch Has Been Custom-Built For The Hardware

One of the biggest surprises of the Nintendo Direct presentation which took place this week was that Bethesda has two more major games coming to the Nintendo Switch and those are DOOM and Wolfenstein 2. US Gamer caught up with Bethesda to ask them about the Nintendo Switch and tried to find out more about the visuals and what framerate the game runs at. Unfortunately, Bethesda wouldn’t mention the framerate but they did say that the shooter has been custom-built for the hardware. Here’s what they had to say about DOOM on the platform.

“DOOM on Switch is custom-built for the hardware and while graphics won’t be 1:1 with other platforms, the game will deliver the amazing DOOM look and feel that fans are excited to get on Switch.”

  1. Well… It was obvious that the game couldn’t be 1:1 as the other consoles, but Bethesda is showing real support. And by the way, if you are looking for graphics that match the Xbox One X in a system that is as big as a smarthphone, well, you choose the system poorly.

        1. Come on petric, the N-Gage is still king. Not only can you run Call of Duty and Sonic, but if things get grimy, you could also use it as a weapon for self defense 😅

      1. I think that the casual consumer will not see the difference between DOOM, or NBA 2k18 on a Switch and a Xbox, but it is the marketing who always says I’m the most powerful system, bla bla bla and so on.

    1. The id tech 6 engine had dynamic resolution scaling baked in. Extremely scaleable game engine technology.
I’m going to guess 720p, 60fps portable and 1080p 60fps docked at around medium settings.

      1. Highly unlikely tht it’ll b 1080p. More likely 900p (maybe a few settings High tht doesnt increase the amount VRAM or GPU usage needed.) Like Lens Dirt, Bloom, player self-shadow, etc.

  2. This is one of the games I wanted since before the Switch even launched. I guess I’m obligated to get it now, lol.

Also, smart work Bethesda. Right now you have a monopoly on AAA FPS games on the Switch. Shame on you Activision/EA/etc.

    1. I think the switch is going to go from strength to strength. All the big third party developers will need to get their arses in to gear else their going to miss out on big sales of their games with the switch. ITS NOT ALL ABOUT GRAPHICS. Every time I play my switch I just think of what an amazing piece of technology I’m holding in my hands wheather im at home or on top of a mountain.

      1. True its not ALL about graphics. Its about both graphics AND performance which Doom does really well bc if the highly optimized id tech 6 game engine. Ill expect nothing less in Wolf 2 which will also b running on tht same engine.

  3. Loved it on PC. I’m getting it for Switch too, but I don’t know how well I can do shooters with just the sticks. It would be awesome if they would add gyro controls a la Splatoon 2.

  4. I imagine it’s going to be 30fps as opposed to 60fps just because of hardware limitations but I hope they can make it 60fps. If not it’s fine for me I’ll still be purchasing on the switch in order to show support but I know many would be disappointed.

    1. If I remember right, the Doom devs said right around the games release, tht ther philosophy is to make the game run at 60fps on all platforms. Thts why they hav the game custom built for each of the consoles and why Vulcan got implemented to b used on PC.

    2. I’m pretty sure they’re gonna go for higher fps than 30 as it’s important for a game like Doom. They might sacrifice resolution and details for that, but 30fps would really harm the experience and they know that. Doom isn’t a game you play for high fidelity graphics, but for fast paced and fluid gameplay and fps is crucial for that.

ANf they wont b really “lazy asses”, id tech 6 engine is a pretty optimized engine so it doesnt take much to make a game made on it to work pretty good. Even more so since the Switch supports Vulkan, so tht makes the porting even easier.

  5. King Kalas X3 {I only buy exclusives that interest me on Switch. For everything else that interests me, there is PS4.}

Yep. The Wolfenstein game is most likely also being custom built for the Switch. Just like Skyrim & Doom. At this rate, Bethesda is gonna totally kick Ubisoft’s ass as THE 3rd party developer for Nintendo Switch.

    1. I hope because Wolfenstein isnt coming til 2018 that it will come with the eventual DLC and maybe if we are blessed enough, comes with both Wolfenstein 1 AND 2. Im cool with waiting for Wolfenstein 2 if it comes with either of those things because paying 60 for the game and DLC just for waiting is enough for me to not get it on pc or ps4 and wait for Switch version.

      1. Looking at the response, I believe it’s save to say that Doom is gonna be a success. Don’t know about Wolfenstein though as it’s generally the less popular brand and a more ‘common’ game. But Doom just perfectly fits to the Switch’s general concept.

I don’t really buy & play games in those franchises but I do like the stories for them. Too bad the Doom movie was just Resident Evil in Space. *facepalm* To be fair, I did still enjoy that movie but it definitely shouldn’t have been called Doom.

    2. Your comment made me without words.

What happen to you? Don’t you hate Third Party developers who are bringing the same games that you already have on ther consoles?

      1. King Kalas X3 {I only buy exclusives that interest me on Switch. For everything else that interests me, there is PS4.}

I don’t hate companies; but I don’t love them, either. Anyway, I don’t care anymore about what multi-platform game comes to Switch anymore. As long as they are good for the gamers, whatever.

    1. Name the old games that are on, or coming, to Switch.
Then name the new games that are on, or coming, to Switch.
Games are games whether “old” or new.

    2. But you do understand that Switch is the first homeconsole you can carry around? So of course they are porting stuff that people would love to play on the go (or dump).
I’d totally pay for Fallout 3 for instance. The Switch just opens a different approach to play these games.

  7. What they fail to mention, and what a lot of devs fail to mention is HOW Doom and so forth and even Unreal Engine is able to run on Switch.
Well, the Vulkan API is WHY these things are possible on Switch.
The Switch supports the Vulkan API.

  8. Bethesda has won Nintendo fans over with their major support for the Switch and we should be grateful enough to purchase these great AAA titles when these games release. No excuses guys, let’s show these guys that we appreciate them supporting our preferred gaming platform of choice with great titles

    1. I completely agree with you. I bet Electronic Arts are bowing their heads down in full shame. I’m freaking glad that Bethesda is showing full support to Nintendo. By the time I get the Nintendo Switch, it would be the greatest of pleasures of owning Skyrim, DOOM, and Wolfenstein II.

    2. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

      ||Not me, however, so far they have done a great job at going from being third in my enemy list into getting a chance to prove themselves…||

  9. This makes sense. It helps me believe EAs FIFA effort was completely legit. But also helps me understand that the 3rd parties.. . The AAA ones view The Switch as a portable console and not a home gaming system. Anyway, as long as the games keep pouring in, no problems.

    1. what are you talking about ea already admitted the newer fifa engine would run onswitch fifa on switchisnt evewn close to pushing the switch the games ugly there is no magical version of are reality were games look great on switch but suddenly dont if its fifa and thats switches fault its not its eas
