Square Enix Is Trying To Get Final Fantasy 15 Running On Nintendo Switch

Square Enix has revealed to Eurogamer that it’s trying its hardest to get Final Fantasy XV running on the Nintendo Switch. The company says that they are doing very specific technical investigations to see if it is indeed possible. From the sounds of it they are determined to get the game on the platform and are working closely with Nintendo.

“We’re actually doing very specific technical investigations into what’s possible at the moment,” Tabata told us at Square Enix’s Shinjuku offices ahead of this week’s Tokyo Game Show. “Where we are at the moment – we’ve completed those tests and have worked out where the ground lies. We’re currently in the middle of the discussion and debate about what we should be doing, and how to realise that on the Switch.

“The other thing – you see the mobile version, the PC version, one thing we value is to optimise the way the game plays and the experience for the individual hardware it’s on rather than a one-size fits all approach. We can’t currently announce anything – we haven’t come to a full decision on the best way to do it yet. We’re having very open, frank discussions with Nintendo at the moment about what they think is the best thing to do. It’s all under investigation.”

“Honestly, when we did the technical test to see if we could use the same native engine we used on other console versions on the Switch, we tried to run it there, the results weren’t satisfactory,” said Tabata. “It wasn’t what you’d want from a final game. It doesn’t mean that’s the end of that – we’re looking at the options, like the customisation of the engine. To give you an example how open those discussions are – we’re talking to Epic at the moment, about maybe what we could possibly do there, and if we did a Switch version maybe we’d be able to partner and do something there. Their Unreal environment is just amazing, and will be very useful. You have to have all those options on the table – without that it’d be impossible to make a decision about what we can do on that platform.”

    1. Luminous Studio is probably too much to handle for Switch, and it’s one of the best aspects of FFXV. Change it to Unreal should be possible, but srs who want to experience the marvellous and boundary pushing graphical capabilities of Luminous Studios watered down or replaced? Commander, you as computer yourself must understand my point of view, sir.

      1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

        ||Yes, I’m just fascinated by how their filthy light-worshiping minds still try, but still, if they manage it somehow then that’s just a win-win situation as you humans say…||

  1. From what I read about how this this game cost them to make I’m not surprised they’re trying to get it on as many platforms as possible.

    This bodes well for FFVIIR and KHIII.

    1. Sounds expensive what they’re doing here, but Square have juiced so much money intro Luminous Studios and the game itself they’re willing to do whatever it takes to push this title. I don’t think Square will be fond of replacing LC with Unreal though. And the game will probably take a noticeable hit in visuals as well.

      1. They’re still having issues with Luminous. I hear that’s why FFVIIR has gone missing. They are switching from Luminous to Unreal for that particular game. Porting the game with the Unreal engine seems to be the b3est option. Unreal and Unity are currently the best engines for development on the Switch.

        1. Didn’t they announce that FFVIIR was build up from ground up with Unreal? I thought they did announce day one this wasn’t Luminous. I couldn’t find anything indicating otherwise when I browsed a few articles.
          Didn’t Ubisoft say Snowdrop just worked instant as well :P ? Even though they’re obviously having a hard time with Steep.
          The PC-port of FFXV is at least going to look gorgeous.

  2. I’d love to see this on the Switch! Not that I would necessarily buy it (I’ve heard mixed reviews), but it would open the door even wider for other devs to see that they can indeed bring any of their games to the Switch.

    1. It could also shut those doors for this certain genre of this scale. Just bringing it means its possible to port games of this scale, but if it isnt financially worth it, then its pointless.

    2. Considering that this games open world was partly inspired by Xenoblade chronicles x, I don’t think we’ll be missing too much if it doesn’t come. I think Xenoblade 2 might be a more definitive RPG experience overall… But those graphics tho

  3. See, this interview here really SEEMS to put the nail in the coffin of the coffin version coming to Switch. If they intended on porting that to Switch, they would already be doing it. Since they are talking to Epic and considering using UE4 as a game engine to port the title, it sounds like a custom built version for Switch that attempts to mimic the original game is what they are shooting for, instead of just defaulting to the easier task of simply porting the pocket edition. It’s not out of the question obviously, they could still end up deciding to port the pocket edition, but they make it clear here that they are trying to bring the standard title in some way, shape and form to Switch instead.

    That’s great news for Switch. Sure, it’s a bummer that the game engine wasn’t a good fit for Switch. Maybe they’ll streamline the engine further, as it even seemed to not run all that great on PS4/XB1. New engines sometimes need time to make adjustments. Even still, if they rebuilt the game on UE4, It’s still a very welcome addition to the Switch library. The game will still look fantastic, it appears to be working great for KH3 and from what I can gather, FFVII remake as well.

    1. Thank you for sharing your on point comment, Jay. And I have agree with you 101%. I hope that director Tabata is in talks with Nintendo and Epic Games Japan. And if Final Fantasy XV is ported and powered by Unreal Engine 4 for the Nintendo Switch, it would be a great privilege and honor to buy it alongside Square Enix/Nintendo’s Project Octopath Traveler.

    2. Historically speaking Square is the only other company that knows how to actually optimize. Go to EA or Activision they give you BS about how they cant do it. You can run Tomb Raider on hardware lower than the PC specs recommended. That shows the dedication they have to games

  4. This and Doom and Wolvenstein are the first good things I have seen since the release of the WII for me to return to a Nintendo console. However If I would buy these games I would still do so on my PS4 just because it has superior graphics, better console user interface, online support/community and controlls. These 3 games are the first good things I have seen since the announcement of the Switch though. This is actually big company third party instead of all the indie stuff and my little pony colerfull kid games.

    1. These are the kind of games that end up in your 30-50 games collection at the end of the console instead of 8-12 solid nintendo games and thats it. Keep up the good work and I might one day return to my favorite platform of the late 80’s and 90’s that went downhill after that.

  5. Amazing news, the last main line Final Fantasy we got was FFVI, after almost 20 years, could the franchise come back to Nintendo? crossing my fingers, hopefully, they can make it happen, they have a copy sold on me if they can make the game look decent and 30fps.

      1. Absolutely, I want to get a PS4 to try out titles like Revenant Kingdom and Persona 5 among others, but Kingdom Hearts 3 will my main incentive on getting one. A Switch port is a must if possible.

    1. From the looks of it they’re having open discussions about them trying and involving Nintendo. That’s the furthest thing from someone looking to make an excuse.

      Not all games are the same.

  6. I played the demo of Octopath Traveler, and I have to say it’s FAR superior to FF15. Don’t waitress about porting FF15, just give us games like Octopath and I’ll be happy.

    And on a side note, Octopath Traveler has more Final Fantasy spirit in it than FF15 does 15 times over. You want to play a real FF game, Octopath is your best choice.

      1. Lol. I haven’t played it but I watched the walk-through. The game seems pretty impressive. It could drown one for hours and then…. The Switch is portable, so that means, unlike most console RPGs, there could be more save points and fast travel mechanics in place. I’m rooting for that game so badly.

  7. King Kalas X3 {I only buy exclusives that interest me on Switch. For everything else that interests me, there is PS4.}

    If they can get this on Switch, that would be a good thing. Well good luck, guys!

    1. King Kalas X3 {I only buy exclusives that interest me on Switch. For everything else that interests me, there is PS4.}

      I really should get around to playing FF15 on my PS4 once I’m done with Metroid: Samus Returns.

        1. King Kalas X3 {I only buy exclusives that interest me on Switch. For everything else that interests me, there is PS4.}

          I do this in real life, too. It’s part of who I am, so nothing to do with the wannabe Sasori.

  8. Bravo Square Enix. If any Switch owner complains about them they have no reason to because they’re actually trying. There are simply times where the hardware isn’t enough.

    I hope they succeed because I need FF7 and KH3 on Switch in order to have an excuse to support Nintendo this gen. Otherwise, the competition will have my money.
