Sony‘s Andrew House recently took part in an interview with Bloomberg, where he talked about the Nintendo Switch’s impact on Sony. While he does feel that Nintendo’s hybrid console concept is a “different approach and strategy”, Sony does not feel like there’s a “huge market opportunity”. The overall message given is that Sony is focusing on what they already have. Here’s what Andrew House had to say:
“The Nintendo device (Switch) is a hybrid device and that’s a different approach and strategy. We have not seen that as being a huge market opportunity. The Vita experience was that outside of Japan and Asia, there was not a huge demand. The lifestyle shift toward the dominance of smartphones as the single key device that is always with you, was the determining factor. That draws me to the conclusion that they’ve really been additive to the business in the last year or so. The folks at Nintendo have their strategy and that’s great. We remain focused around a highly connected gaming experience and also coupled with having a great range of other entertainment experiences so you can reach multiple people on the big screen in the household.”
Andrew House can just eat my shorts!
Harsh words
I would agree…….but I have a certificate signed by him proving that I’m an “exper gamer”, so I feel I have to be nice to him on this.
Sony have the same idea about wii controllers too but we saw what happens “ps move”
It sold worse then both Wii and Kinect. Granted this could just be talk but I doubt Sony will do it again this time. With PS4 being so successful its a fools errand to try and sway handheld gamers towards you as well after you failed to the one you’d hope to defeat twice.
Don’t you mean Sony Ice Cream Cones?
the ps dildo…

Sony had been internally working on motion controls long before the Wii was even announced, actually. They were experimenting with the earliest concepts of PS Move during the days of Eye Toy, which go back all the way to 1999.
I guess they took the jump after seeing it can be a successful concept, after seeing how extremely well the Wii was selling, but they were way too late to the party.
Oh yeah! I keep forgetting about the EyeToy that was out about 2 years after the Gamecube released for the PS2. I remember quite a few commercials about it, too. Not sure how Move worked but I do know that Microsoft’s Kinect was an evolution of Sony’s EyeToy.
For them, I would agree. For Nintendo, it’s very much the evolution of what they’ve been trying to achieve with both their handhelds and home consoles since the year 2000. Almost the culmination of their ideology.
Let’s hope it continues to pay off for them, as I really love this current Nintendo and hope this model becomes a standard for a few generations.
Pretty much. Plus they’ve probably realized by now that they can’t compete with Nintendo in the gaming portable market.
I agree. But the only thing that can complete what Nintendo have built with the Switch is cloud computing. I think Nintendo already know this.
It would be nice to see them use cloud computing on the switch in the future
Yep, I feel the same way. It’s not a huge market opportunity >for them<. From experience imitating Nintendo products has never been a huge success for them. Especially since a Playstation device like the Switch would need to be much more powerful than the Switch is to fit in the playstation image. It would really be too expensive to be a viable product people would be interested in. Nintendo is also focusing their main development on the Switch, a value increasing aspect Sony cannot replicate with Playstation.
i love how he blames mobile apps and not the proprietary memory
So they actually think that the Vita didn’t sell mainly because of smartphones?
Made my day!
Yeaaaaaah sure Sony sureeeeee lol. I better not see a PlayStation swap 2000 in the near future!
I get it.
I personally hope the Switch concept is the standard for Nintendo platforms going forward. If they went back to just doing a traditional console, it’d feel like a big step backwards.
They already merged both handheld and main console divisions. So just as Gameboy is dead and DS is now the standard, I think Switch will be the way forward for them but they will continue to innovate around this. I doubt we’ll be seeing a dramatic shift like what happened from the Wii to the WiiU
“Stay tuned for details on our own version of the Switch on the future!”
This is coming from the company responsible for the fucking Emoji Movie.
To be fair, we all are responsible for the fucking Emoji Movie! This is what we let the world become!
We do not speak of that cancer around here.
And FYI, only the film division was responsible for that shit.
We shouldn’t speak of the other crap Sony’s film division has given us, either. Like a certain 2016 movie that was a remake of a comedy where the comedy was changed to slapstick humor while the original had used dry humor for comedy. *cough*Ghostbusters2016*cough*
*just looked up the Goosebumps comedy movie* Sony was involved with that abomination!? That explains EVERYTHING!!
Fast forward 1 year from now: Sony announces hybrid home/portable console.
Right…like how they said that they didn’t think motion controls were that big a deal. Then BOOM! Playstation Move!
It’s Playstation Ice Cream Cones, get it right!
You forgot about how they ditched their boomerang pad and hurriedly made the sixaxis to support motion controls.
They claimed vibrations would interfere with the motion technology and when Nintendo proved them wrong, 1 year later, they created the DualShock3
The reason people didn’t embrace this concept with the Vita, Andrew, is because you’re required to also buy a PS4 for remote play.
The Switch on the other hand is a single and convenient all in one $300 purchase.
Plus you’re company is shit when it comes to supporting your handhelds with great first party content. Almosas bad as Microsoft with their home consoles as of late.
*your
*Almost as bad as
The library part is so true, only thing I’m at least somewhat interested in is Persona 4 Golden and Danganronpa, but it’s not worth it in the slightest to me.
I’d buy a Vita just to play the old Final Fantasy games again.
And I was asking myself when Sony would say their next shit about “not being worried at the other companies” and in a short amount of time, reveal their next rip-off. Glad they said it before the end of this year.
Sony is just running scared at this point by the looks of things XD
The Vita’s problem is that I don’t think it was marketed very well, besides the lackluster library, I didn’t really find out about the “hybrid” function outside of the Sony fans themselves talking about it. Even then it wasn’t a new concept with the Vita, the Game Boy player let you play pretty much any Gameboy game on the tv while the Advance gave you a much better portable option than the Switch. I do like that the Switch gives me freedom to easily move anywhere in the house, but I don’t really do much outside of that since you can’t really put it inside your pocket.
||The Sonyans have declared war, once the Xbots are erased from Japan, we will deal with these corrupted filth…||
1) The Vita was not advertised as a hybrid console, you idiot.
2) And it required additional hardware to make it a hybrid console
3) The Vita failed because it didn’t have enough games
4) Or good enough marketing
5) Or quite enough power to play the home console quality games Sony might have been hoping
6) And not the screen size for that either – Switch (and Wii U before it) has shown what you need.
7) The market opportunity is clear because Switch is doing exceptionally well
8) There is no longer a market opportunity for a hybrid console because Nintendo have already taken that opportunity.
9) You lose!
10) Good day sir!
That title had me thinking Sony was attacking Nintendo’s hybrid system. lol But since I read the article, I know they were simply saying they don’t intend to copy Nintendo’s idea any time soon. I don’t really believe them but meh. Whatever.
Remember what Sony said about the Wii before they made their magical wands…….. I’m not buying this statement is bit.
Come 2020 (after Super Force returns). ..
Sony will announce at PlayStation Experience :
“We have now created the world’s most powerful hybrid console. 9 Teraflop in the palm of your hands. “
and the battery life of a single AA battery!
You know, in a clock those last quite long actually ;-)
“It’s not our fault we totally whiffed it with the Vita, the portable market is dumb and stupid and no one will ever buy anything from it ever again!”
The vita didn’t have huge demand BECAUSE SONY stopped supporting it. Also Sony’s idea was for third parties to put triple-A titles on it when it was seen as a portable device like the 3DS. It was like why spend loads and loads of money to make a game on a portable system. Looks like Sony’s becoming the worst of the 3 console companies now.
Yet Sony is probably already in the process of copying the Switch in some way.
My biggest complaint about the Switch (aside from lack of internal memory) is that it’s the biggest pain in the ass out of all Nintendo consoles. It’s so awkward, the way it sits in the dock. And simply turning it on is a pain (why no power button on the controllers?). I don’t like putting it in sleep mode. So every freakin’ time I’m done playing, I have to hold the power button until it shuts off properly. These are things I’ll forever complain about with the Switch. It has it’s strong points, but the NES, SNES and Gamecube are still my favorites.
It is designed to be in sleep mode all the time. For the same reason you are saying it is the mo
My only issue is why is the socket for the headphones at the top when it should be underneath and why the AUX connection to plug in for a powerbank at the bottom when it should be at the top? They should had thought about when it was in NX stage in R&D.
I totally agree with this, although to dock it, it needs to connect at the bottom
Right right. I wouldn’t mind dockibg it upside down. Or just added another uSB port for the top.
LOL….the power button on the controllers is the home button…..hold the home button down, you can put it to sleep. Hold the home button down, the switch turns on…….
He wants to turn the Switch off, not put it to sleep. You can’t turn the thing off with the Joy-Cons; that was his point.
Sleep mode doesn’t shut it off properly. I don’t like my Switch being on 24/7. Especially when I don’t play it for weeks at a time.
The Home button acts like a power button. Just press and hold the Home button and will wake up the system.
It’d be nice if we could hold the home button down on one of the Joy-Cons to bring up a side menu that has options like turning off the system. PS4 has it. I’m sure the Xbone has it. Switch needed it like on day 1.
He’s right. It wouldn’t work for them and it’s cool that they understand that. If they’d just clone it and bring it as some unloved child like their portable consoles or the Move, it woud just not work and could even harm their image. They already went into the market for so-known-pro/core-gamers with demands for highe-end graphics and immersion and that’s cool. I really love how Nintendo managed to successfully create a market for their own just like that. They had this vision with the WiiU and finally get their reward with the Switch. After the XBone and the PS4 both were nothing but plain power-upgrades to the predecessor gens which were already following a very similar path of just bringing always the same experiences again and again, I was tempted to believe that this is it. This is what gaming in the 21st century is becoming more and more and Nintendo needs to get away from the WiiU and just release a ‘normal’ console in order to compete.
Who the hell would’ve fought that they would get into a niche like this and widen it until it’s an ecosphere on its own that’s even that rewarding for everyone believing in it.
They’ll just stop supporting it. Like they are doing the PS VR…. i mean Sony stop supporting every peripheral a year after its release
“Nintendo’s device” he could of just said Switch like any normal person lol
What he mean the hybrid has no big opportunities? Didnt it already pass the PS4 in 4months in sales in Japan? Also why he saying thr Switch has no Opportunity, why dont he figure out why the vanilla PS4 still outselling the PS4 Pro
The PS4 gets a facelift and the first PS4 still outselling that.
Guys, remember the Vita!? Sony it likes to bring it up whenever they wanna shit on handheld gaming because they can’t do it.
Nintendo always and will continue to dominate the handheld market. Ever since Gameboy they’ve been dominating their competition. Sony can’t even compete.
Well … I still expect a Sony or M$ hybrid next year.
When there is money to be gained enter Sony enter M$.
I think someone’s just mad the PS Vita failed miserably where as the Switch is kicking ass.
The Nintendo device (Switch) is a hybrid device and that’s a different approach and strategy. We have not seen that as being a huge market opportunity
Are you Jealous mister?
The Vita experience was that outside of Japan and Asia, there was not a huge demand. The lifestyle shift toward the dominance of smartphones as the single key device that is always with you, was the determining factor.
This is true. From where I live, nobody have a PS Vita. NOBODY
We remain focused around a highly connected gaming experience and also coupled with having a great range of other entertainment experiences so you can reach multiple people on the big screen in the household
SONY E3 2018: We proudly announce the Nintendo Switch… ERH I mean the Playstation Switch.
They better hope they’re right. If this is what catches on as the new standard and Sony’s 5+ years late to the party, probably more if they spend an entire additional generation on true console, they’re never going to be able to force their way into the new space.
Honestly, what I think they should concern themselves with is PC’s. Consoles have for generations now been eliminating the differences between themselves and low budget gaming PC’s to the point that if you have one, there’s not much point to owning a non-Nintendo console. Shoot, virtually every time I find a game that makes me want to get my PS4 fixed (faulty HDMI port), the game comes out on PC anyway. Nintendo is offering the only gaming experience that is nothing like a gaming PC. I can easily see Sony going the way of Microsoft’s OS department and maintaining their market dominance in pure home consoles, only to see that market shrink to half of what it was.
So in other words: the Vita failed outside of Aisa (Japan), therefore a hybrid console will also fail.
Uhm… where does this statement even begin to make sense? If Sonys statement would be true, then the 3DS would’ve failed just as much as the Vita. Let’s be honest here guys: Nintendo just knows how to handle handhelds much better than Sony. The 3DS was a big success and was carrying Nintendo while the Wii U was loosing them money.
But no, since the Sony handheld as not a success outside of Asia, obviously smart devices are at fault and there’s no room for a handheld gaming market anymore.
Suuuure~
Basically he’s saying they’re going to copy the idea when the time is right… Think analog sticks, motion controllers. I like Sony, but i’m calling it as I see it.
