Game Freak director Shigeru Ohmori has revealed to IGN what we all expected and that’s that Pokémon Ultra Sun & Moon will be the last Pokémon RPGs for the ageing Nintendo 3DS platform. Because of this Ohmori says that they are planning to push the system to its limits with the forthcoming games.
“When we were making Pokemon X and Y, we really were trying to push the 3DS system to its absolute limits – which is what we thought we’d done. But when Sun and Moon came around, we completely redesigned the system, and actually ended up pushing the 3DS even further to what we thought was the most we could draw out of it.”
However, that process of improvement seems to have come to an end, with the upshot being that Game Freak will move on after the new games’ release on November 17:
“With Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon,” explains Ohmori, “we’ve tried to eke that out more and really, really push the system to its absolute limits, and we’re now feeling that perhaps this is the maximum of what we can get out. So we’re really treating Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as the culmination of our work with the 3DS system.”
This must mean they’re moving on to the Switch for their games.
Gen 8 soon.
You must’ve missed this year’s E3. Back then, they revealed that the next gen is coming to the Switch, and they’ve initially claimed that it’s happening in 2018, which would be the shortest time between Pokémon generations.
I know that already.
That’s why I said “Gen 8 soon”.
they NEVER claimed that, they said MORE than a year, it’ll be out in 2019, the game only started development this year, it won’t be ready by next year!
its too early for gen 8 to begin. i was thinking a remake of gen 4 we all want.
Why would you want an old gen with just a slightly changed story with reused Pokemon then an all-new gen? The Pokemon company did state it might come out in 2018, though they will probably take a gap year like usual
Well, as far as I can tell, every remakes has some few new changes. You never know if they choose starter Pokemon and give them mega evolutions for the game. Besides, the Pokemon company are still more interest on making remakes. It took them 3 years to develop that progress.
That would go against every pattern they’ve set up so far. Either you mean you want the Sinnoh remake to somehow introduce the new generation, or you want a Switch remake to belong to the same generation as the gen VII 3DS games. Neither case makes sense, especially since it hasn’t even been three years since the Hoenn remakes came out.
It is 3 years. I was still for them to develop a remake for gen 4.
How do you know that GameFreak hasn’t been developing the Switch Pokemon game since 2015? They could have started working on the game using an Nvidia Tegra X1 Dev kit and when they final got their hands of a Nintendo Switch dev kit, they could have ported their stuff over to that and started working on finishing it up in 2017.
So Gen 8 isn’t far off.
Well, they should be finishing next year. they always have the deadline about when the game is done. So, i’m just saying.
@ PikaSpookHD, fair enough, I misremembered them specifically saying 2018. However, the wording of “may” and “over a year” in June is ambiguous enough that it could still very well refer to the later half of 2018. I personally don’t hope so, since I think it’d be too soon.
@CrazyRainbowStar, someone who knows doesn’t say “this must mean” to something as if it’s news to them, just saying. Either way, like the other guy pointed out, neither of us really knew that to be true, since they never technically gave a preliminary release year.
I meant I would rather have a gen 8 game comes out, then have a Sinnoh remake come out next year if there was a choice, Though I do think its unlikely for them to release any type of game next year
. Also, I never said anything about Sinnoh introducing gen 8.
Did anyone really expect more Pokemon games on the 3DS anyways?
I honestly thought Sun and Moon were the last 3DS pokemon games. USUM shouldve been switch games.
P4. Wasn’t this pretty much a given? We already know the next game is coming to Switch.

Should have been sooner but at least they’re finally moving on. The 3DS had a good run but it’s no longer suitable for main series Pokémon.

The tears of the crybabies that wanted the 3DS to last forever or get its own successor are so sweet.
Legit question.
Do you really think the 3ds wont have a succesor? At this point I would think its pointless, but I cant see a future were Ninty doesnt have a dedicated handheld controller.
It does have one. It came out March 3rd of this year and has proven to be a huge success and is already confirmed to be getting the next Pokémon.
I agree, to me the switch is a handheld, but Ninty keeps calling it a homeconsole or hybrid, and it bugs me, because I feel like they might still be considering bringing a successor, which would once again, split its development team.
They simply want to keep selling 3DS’s for a bit. Their last big GBA game was Pokémon Emerald in 2005 and from my research the GBA remained available until at least 2007, at most 2010 depending on the source.
Yeah, the last report we got was that the 3ds was about 60% (maybe even 70%) of their revenue so far. So I know why ots still here, I just hope they do indeed keep the Switch as its only hardware going forward.
It was 50% and it was also after only 1 month of the Switch being available. The numbers will likely be very different next year.
I already know it’s the last one for Nintendo 3DS. I’m gonna miss playing it on the handheld system. Well, I’m excited for next year pokemon game.
I thought this was already implicated when they announced the Switch games back in E3 but okay.
Thank god. This gen is garbage.

Why is everyone making this sound so final?
It’s not like USUM will be the last handheld Pokemon game ever (since the days of Pokemon Red/Green), right? How do we know this isn’t just a situation like B2W2, Emerald, and Crystal before it?
I just hope we can still migrate Gen 7 Pokemon over to Gen 8.
More than likely since we have pokebank
On the Switch (because that’s seems to be the next destination).
RIP 3DS.
I kind of expect the 3DS to be phased out next year with a last push for the holiday to sell a few more units. The Switch is clearly capable of being a home and portable console at the same time but unless Nintendo plans to go that route forever then I’m sure we’ll see another handheld sometime in the future. I really doubt they’ll kill their handheld line completely since the 3DS was really successful for most of its life.
NO!!! You think?
