DOOM Dev On Bringing Game To Switch “It’s Been Hard, Wicked Hard”

DOOM on Nintendo Switch launches November 10  and the game looks to be running great on Nintendo’s latest console. GamesRadar recently got to speak with Panic Button, the studio behind DOOM, about bringing the game to Switch. Adam Creighton, Studio GM & Director of Development at Panic Button, says that bringing DOOM to Switch was quite challenging.

“It’s been hard, wicked hard. But I would expect it to be. This is a title that is so frenetic and action-packed and gameplay-pure that getting it to work correctly on the hardware is really important to us, and we spend a lot of time trying to make sure it measures up from the lens of ‘does it feel like Doom?’”.

Creighton also expresses his views on how he feels that some gamers focus on technical performance rather than how a game plays.

“This might sound defensive, but I’m bummed some gamers focus on framerate or resolution, and don’t focus on, ‘Is it fun?’ or ‘Does gameplay feel good?’ I know we’re working hard to bring quality games to the hardware for which we develop. To make them enjoyable on the TV. To make them enjoyable on the go. I’m proud of my team. We’re working hard, we’re not cutting corners, and we’re not leaving anything on the table.”

  1. Lol Good interview. I found some strange things that I couldn’t help but think about while reading it though. Isn’t it sort of an oxymoron to say you don’t know why some people are so concerned with frame rate, yet right after wonder why they’re not as concerned with how good gameplay feels? Last I checked, frame rate was directly connected to the gameplay experience. How the world moves, how smoothly you interact with said world, and your general player inputs overall are all affected by frame rate.

We all know games can be tight but not fun, but don’t lie and say you haven’t experienced the opposite. A game that was so fun, you just wished it ran properly because then it would be perfect. I’m pretty sure any gamer worth his/her salt has come across titles like that. I’ll name one i’m playing right now. Neverwinter lol.

I can understand the resolution question though, but that’s subjective I guess. I game on a 32 inch TV and don’t want anything larger for gaming. 720p looks fine to me. Not as good as 1080p but at 32 inches you can get away with murder. What about the general person who games on a 42 to 55 inch tv though? My buddy games on a 70-something inch screen. 720p isn’t gonna look good if you’re that guy.

    1. I have a 55 inch tv and I don’t complain at al with any game below 720p or les 30fpsl. I play for fun no for res or fps. I saw other forum comlaining that they don’t want to but the game if they don’t have motion control and gyro but we know the true already but the point is that a lot people who had the other consoles or pc games they got to used with that so they forgot (Wii U fault maybe). I ‘m a gamer and I play with anything and with every controller, fps, res everyone can give I don’t complain with that. If you have a good story and gameplay thats enough for me

There are very, very few games where framerate cahnges between 30-60 make a significant impact. If you play Tekken, by all means complain. If you’re taking Doom onto a small tablet, get real.

Good performance & good gameplay are pretty dependent on each other. The gameplay isn’t gonna be fun at all if you are having to deal with glitches that ruin the fun or if the frame drop is too damn low & too frequent. To say performance doesn’t matter is quite idiotic, really.

Even resolution can be important to the fun of a game, too. It’s not fun playing a game you can barely see or hurts your eyes as you play it. Go on too long looking at crappy visuals/quality & it can negatively effect your eyesight. There is a bloody reason HD is becoming such a big deal these days, after all.

At a certain point, resolution has to be good or else, as I said above, it negatively effects your eyesight at some point. I won’t EVER get a Switch port of Skyward Sword, for instance, unless they update it to 720p or higher because it was jaggy as hell when played on the Wii U. I actually like being able to see so I won’t risk it again. If it doesn’t bother you, more power to you but it does bother others.

So yes. Resolution is important at a certain point for many people.

So? I’m getting most of my games on PS4 for the better, cheaper data storage. The Switch could be just as powerful as PS4 with great performance & I’d still choose PS4 over Switch. The console I game most on has nothing to do with my opinion.

        *rolls eyes*

  3. I canNOT wait for this game. I’m gonna reward the team’s hard work with a game purchase and hours and hours of gameplay. This looks to be awesome.

    1. It might come in an update if the feedback for it is strong….
      Operation Rainfall style.
But then again… Would anyone want to stress that much for gyro controlled aiming? That effort could be used to compel Ninty to consider a HD remake of Pandora’s Tower

  4. I thought they were leaving the custom maps on the table or has that changed? I’m not too bothered if that’s been cut at the moment. How is Wolfensten Switch doing?
