Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon producer Shigeru Ohmori recently sat down with GameSpot for an interview, where they talked about Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. One of the topics of discussion was about Game Freak’s development on Pokemon Ultra Sun & Moon, as well as the upcoming Pokemon Switch project. Ohmori said that “of course we have a limited number of staff available to us, but we have a very varied staff within the company. We have younger staff members and also veterans who have been working on the series for a long time, very technically gifted staff members. We want to use these staff in the best way possible. For example this time with Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon we can treat it mainly as a project for our younger staff to work on and grow and develop their skills, while perhaps the more veteran, established members of the company can work on the upcoming [Switch] project.”
“That’s an approach we often take: having a growth-based project for younger staff members and then a new project for the existing veterans. Using this project management style ensures all of our projects have a positive effect on one another as they go”.
What are your guesses on possible names for the Switch versions?
I’m going to say…. Earth and Sky.
Depends on what direction they plan on going for the setting and theming.
If they want to draw on retro appeal, they can make the oft requested return to Kanto and name them Scorching Red and Strangling Green or some other kind of reference to the originals. The Switch has a very “SNES” feel to it and its games, so this wouldn’t surprise me. It would be all new content of course, with new pokemon, but use an updated version of the Kanto map and the promotion would heavily feature the original trio.
If it’s a normal all new gen with all new everything, the sky’s the limit. So I don’t know. North and South?

There might be the possibility they will stop doing dual versions when the series transitions as a handheld series to both a console and handheld series.
This got me wondering how they’d make it worth trading with other players and then it hit me, change what Pokemon you encounter based on what starter you chose at the start of the game. Borrowing older Pokemon for an example, let’s say picking Charmander has you encounter Pidgey in the wild while Squirtle has you encounter Spearow and so on. That’d let them have three sets of exclusives putting an even bigger emphasis on trading in order to complete the dex. It’d also have the bonus of consolidating all the sales numbers into one game instead of splitting them between two.
I hope it’ll be Sparkling Diamond and Shiny Pearl. (A.K.A Gen 4 remakes)

Oh man i still hope that nintnedo makes a new handheld. I dont like the switch as a handheld. its not all that durable . I hope the pokemon switch game is pokemon ultra eclipse. A 3rd game would for the switch would be cool while the 3ds (or its successor) gets 2 regular ones. Boom best of both worlds!
I think they just need to make a Switch mini to make it more easily portable rather than making a different handheld. Having all the games on one medium will make the game droughts far less noticeable.
I actually like that idea. The usual dual release on handheld & the 3rd game on the hybrid a year later.

I think you need to keep dreaming, they will eventually, nintendo likes to innovate so in 5-7 years they will be making a new handheld. They might get out of the console race though, i will give you that
I hope Nintendo doesn’t make a new dedicated handheld to be honest. I’d rather have all my Nintendo games on one device and the Switch is perfect for that. I always hated having games split between the 3DS and Wii U and skipped out on quite a few Wii U games simply because for me portability is king. The Switch is the best of both worlds all in one. I look forward to being able to focus on just the Switch for the next handful of years before we undoubtedly see what Nintendo has for us next, and I hope that they stick with the hybrid strategy with that one too so I can focus on just that. I feel like the Switch has a long life ahead of it though.
Also, doing yet another Su/Mo game would be a huge mistake. Twice is fine, that’s the tradition. They could have gotten away with making Ultra Su/Mo for the Switch but I think they made the wise decision of making something new from the ground up instead.
If we don’t get a new handheld and Gen 8 stays on the Switch, then its going to be a very short Pokemon play session.
The Switch can stay on as long as the 3DS. Not to mention that you can backup your save data once you start your game, as opposed to keeping everything on a cartridge.
I don’t see any problems with this. Sun and Moon use up so much of a 3DS’s resources, that the battery life lasts significantly less time when I play it. Miitopia ran fine and I had 4+ hours of time before my 2-year-old New 3DS XL got low. Sun and Moon gives me 1-2, and while it’s running, my 3DS never reaches full charge, though it can while playing pretty much anything else. I don’t know if it was a bug in the game that affects the firmware, or what, but it’s not going to be a major issue for me if the Switch lasts as long as it does while running Breath of the Wild.
I primarily play in portable mode, so I’m used to putting it up to charge when I’m done, but I’m usually done playing for a session by that time, if not, I just switch (hehe) to playing on the TV until I’m done playing for that session, or, in the case that I’m not home, plug it in where I can, and do other things.
Also, the Switch is going to bring about a whole new generation of Pokemon content like let’s plays, livestreams, and other such content, as it will be the first main series game to have easy Elgato access, unlike every handheld prior. I mean, if you wanted to be a Pokemon content creator with direct-feed footage, you had to pay for a modded, warranty-broken device that wasn’t always perfect. Not to mention the fact that the 3DS’s 16:10 screen is almost always stretched into 16:9 by YouTubers and Twitch streamers, leaving noticeable, but not super extreme horizontal distortion.
As far as I can tell, the Switch is the best home Pokemon has found in years. Nintendo, Game Freak, and the Pokemon Company aren’t going to ruin that fact. The most they’re going to do is restrictive copyright flags, but they can’t stop streams or channels without the music in the background.
Fine, just keep it at home, because it won’t last on the go.
BTW, internet streaming is not that big a deal and not the first thing that comes to mind with a Pokemon game.
Something as adventurous as PKMN Colosseum and as fun as PKMN Stadium… That would be awesome.
