Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is available now to download in Australia but the rest of the world has to wait until later this month to get their hands on it. Today, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has revealed that the Kyoto-based company can’t confirm whether the mobile app will interact with a possible new console version of the game. It seems likely that it will, but at present the company is refusing to comment.

I honestly think development started around that “amiibo festival” crap.
I mean… They’ve had the HD models done for most NCP’s since the launch of the “Animal Crossing WiiU PLAZA” (it had many character NPCs in this spinoff), so I think, as development progressed for the mainline game, they ultimately decided to port certain aspects and models into a different game, which made “amiibo festival” — this game was basically consolation for AC fans who had their hopes up; all while keeping the mainline game under wraps still.
I also believe that they had a WiiU launch in mind for the mainline game, but moved plans over to the Switch because the WiiU was dying. Also, Before the switch/NX was announced, I don’t think development was fully stable/progressive, I think it was put aside for a while in order to focus on other big games or to have the team work on “Happy Home Designer” and the “Welcome Amiibo” DLC for New Leaf.
Pretty sure development for the mainline game accelerated around Nov. 2016… I’m guessing a holiday 2018 launch or a Quarter 1, 2019 launch.
Of course this just my theory….

It was confirmed by them a year ago and this year there not doing a good job at covering there tracks they talk about this the same month the switch was reveal right before the animal crossing direct for new leaf

Pocket camp is a free to start cellular game, gameplay is completely different from the classic series.
A Switch version of Animal Crossing would be great, though. (Maybe pilotwings, wave race and f-zero too)
Maybe they’ll add a camp section to the Switch version and we’ll be able to meet the people that have Animal Crossing Pocket Camp on their phone via internet.
