Sony’s Kazuhiko Takeda: “We Can’t Ignore The Nintendo Switch, Which Has Captured Consumers’ Attention”

A brand new Nikkei interview with Kazuhiko Takeda, Sony‘s Head of Corporate Planning, has been posted. Sony’s Playstation 4 is still selling well, but Takeda has admitted that even their strongest operations “have issues to be tackled”. One of these “issues” is that, according to Takeda, the Nintendo Switch has “also captured consumers’ attention”. Because of this, Takeda says that Sony “can’t ignore the Nintendo Switch”. Here’s what Takeda said about the matter in full:

Q: So it’s possible Sony could exceed its profit forecast?

A: At the moment, we can say with certainty that 630 billion yen is achievable. But even our strongest operations have issues to be tackled. Our greatest risk now is losing our intensity.

Q: What sort of issues?

A: At our gaming business, sales of the PlayStation 4 are strong heading into the holidays. But we can’t ignore the Nintendo Switch, which has also captured consumers’ attention. Our business model involves selling both the game console and the software for it, so we’re working to get more customers paying continuously for content, for example through paid subscription services.

    1. I wish, but a mainline Persona title has never appeared on Nintendo hardware. The only way I would see it happening is if it were a remake or remaster of one of the older games in the series, but even that would be surprising imo.

      1. Wow… yeah, admittedly I totally skipped over that part. Guess Sony’s next console will be the PlayStation Swipe – your credit cards will be your JoyCons!

    1. I just don’t see this happening.
They’re at the crossroad, where if they decide to try and mock Switch, they will lose certain crowd to Microsoft.
And still it would be too much of a gamble for them to go against Switch with its strong first party presence.
There is no scenario, where they could have both a competitive home console, and handheld at the same time.

      1. Correct Petric22. The Sonyan forces are on a crossroads where they have to decide who have to focus on the war. But after this article it seems they will do something against Nintendo and so our forces have to fight both PS4 and the Xtoaster but in advantage they will lose the power battle against the Xbot forces.

  1. Sony is worried about sales and it will offer more good (and old) games in its psn online subscription until the good sales of NS goes down and good AAA like God of War, Days Gone, Shadow of the Colossous, Death Stranding and Last of Us be ready to fight.

    1. Maybe if they didn’t go dickish with neglecting backward compatibility and cross platform, they wouldn’t have to worry much about Nintendo but now they’re working on dropping more support and functions for it.

  3. Seems the Sonyan forces are a bit worried about their most powerful weapon neglected in the second place by the Nintendo Switch.

Well well Sony why don’t you show your weapon to us and stop hiding in the dark? We all know that you are preparing for a weapon so show it now and let’s see what you can do, but don’t think we Nintendo fans will be scared.
