It has been over two years now since Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s 4th President and CEO, passed away due to complications from a bile duct tumor. Today would’ve been his 58th birthday. He was born on December 6th, 1959. Although Iwata is no longer with us, his legacy has not been forgotten. Nintendo has paid tribute to him in games such as Star Fox Zero, Breath Of The Wild and Pokemon Ultra Sun & Moon. Sadly, Iwata never got to see the release of the Switch, a console he had been the head developer of during the final months of his life. He had passed away when the console was still known as the NX and over a year before Nintendo showed off the Switch to the world. Nevertheless, his spirit lives on in the many games he has worked on, the consoles he developed and the developers and fans he has inspired. Happy birthday, Mr. Iwata.

For me it was Metroid Prime, Zero Mission and Fusion, Pokemon Stadium, Crystal, Sapphire and Pokemon XD, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, Paper Mario TTYD, Kirby’s Adventure, Super Smash Bros. 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and many many more. It seems like just yesterday he was politely asking us to please understand.

I’m beginning to think you don’t know WTF “sarcasm” is. You really think I’m happy about him being dead? What kind of sick fuck are you? I thank him for his past works like Smash Bros. but you can’t expect me to like him for anything about him regardless of him being president. He’s flawed and some of those flaws I don’t like about him. His handling of Wii U is a prime example of that and that POS console and 2015 E3 is what made me quit Nintendo for almost 2 years.
Lastly, I am not about to take shit from that other idiot who keeps repeating the same dumbass phrases for every reply. Every. Single. Time. He’s not a broken record player. He’s a moron stuck on a replay loop as if nobody got the message at this point: You’re like a retarded Pokemon saying the same name every time instead of using syllables cleverly.
He will be the spirit in many gamers hearts forever. I bet he is still smiling down on what Nintendo has done with the Switch. And I bet there’s a Nintendo focused company in heaven. I believe there is life outside of Earth. Iwata had a great lasting impact on the history of Nintendo. He will still be remembered as one of the most important people in the company has ever known.
But most importantly, he was…unique!

He really seemed to be be a guy with a lot of passion and with a big heart. I am really thankful for all the great gaming experiences that he has delivered. I was shocked when I heard of his death. It really, literally made me sad….and I didn’t even know the man, only his public persona. It’s probably because he had created, or at least influenced so may great gaming memories for me and because he just always seemed to be such a nice, calm and friendly guy. In the world that we have today, a man like this is missed even more. Much more. I for one really loved the WiiU but it’s a bit sad that he had to go in that era before being abke to see that his vision would finally pay off big time with the Switch. He was a true long term thinker and it has been people like him that made Nintendo the company that it is. A company that has managed to stay relevant over decades, that still has the most iconic characters and franchises in gaming because they always think long term and because they take good care of their IP’s and put true passion nd heart into their games and systems. Iwata was the perfect man for this. Rest in peace Mr. Iwata. May your spirit and soul live forever. I mean this from the bottom of my heart.
I miss Iwata a lot. Me and a friend of mine was actually talking about him just a few hours ago. Talk about coincidence.
I still remember the day quite well. I was so shocked and genuinely sad. We mad a podcast to honour Iwata, and most of us had to take breaks and had cracks in our voices.

Nintendo Directs just haven’t been the same without Iwata. In fact, I don’t even pay attention to Nintendo Directs anymore since his passing (with only a few exceptions). Many of them are boring now, with only a bit of excitement here and there. I just come here to My Nintendo News to find out what happened. Happy belated birthday, Iwata san. Hope you’re having fun soaring around in Lakitu’s cloud.
