Nintendo Switch Sells 10 Million Worldwide

Despite launching in March, a month not usually reserved for home console launches, and with the busy holiday shopping season still in full swing, the Nintendo Switch system has already sold 10 million units to consumers around the world, according to Nintendo’s internal sales figures.

Nintendo Switch is a home console that can be played on a TV, and also taken instantly on the go – it lets people play their favorite games anytime, anywhere and with anyone. And since every Nintendo Switch system comes bundled with two Joy-Con controllers, players can easily share the fun of compatible multiplayer games with friends and family* right out of the box.

The robust and diverse library on Nintendo Switch features two of the most acclaimed video games of all time in Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. At The Game Awards last week in Los Angeles, Super Mario Odyssey won the award for Best Family Game. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was honored with the awards for Game of the Year, Best Action/Adventure Game and Best Game Direction.

Nintendo Switch is also home to fun multiplayer games like Mario Kart 8 DeluxeSplatoon 2 and ARMS that can be played online** or with friends and family in the same room, as well as an ever-growing list of great third-party games like Mario + Rabbids Kingdom BattleFIFA 18Rocket LeagueL.A. NoireThe Elder Scrolls V: SkyrimGolf Story and Stardew Valley, Nintendo Switch is truly for any player.

“As you can see in people’s living rooms, on a plane or riding the subway, fans all over the world can enjoy playing Nintendo Switch wherever they go,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “The response from fans has been great, and we’re doing our very best to satisfy demand during the holiday shopping season.”

After a record-breaking 2017, Nintendo Switch will continue its momentum in 2018. The system will see the launch of Nintendo-published games like Kirby Star AlliesBayonettaBayonetta 2 and a new game in the beloved Yoshi franchise, in addition to big third-party games like Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus from Bethesda, Mega Man 11 from Capcom, PROJECT OCTOPATH TRAVELER (working title) from Square Enix, Shovel Knight: King of Cards from Yacht Club Games and Runner3 from Choice Provisions.

  1. With the Christmas Holidays coming, there is a serious chance that it could outsell the Wii U lifetime sales even before its first year.Well done Nintendo!

    1. No, it didn’t even past 5 million in it’s first year. It did 3 million in it’s first few months and then drop dead HARD after 2012 holidays. From then on, it was barely limping 2-4 million A YEAR until 2016 finally put it out of it’s misery.

      1. LEL, I remember people always saying, “Dont worry guys, the WiiU will sell billions this holiday!”…
Then after there’s no improvement that time…
“Just wait till Mario Kart or some other game comes out!” xD (it would just go full circle every year)
On top of that, MNN would post articles and it would just be bad news – after bad news.
The WiiU was probably one of the saddest consoles. x)

    1. Lol… That’s cold as Ice Thanos!
I do think the Switch will continue to sell as there will be variations in hardware over the years. I can see more RAM and GPU improvements.
However, it will be interesting to see how the Switch performs when Microsoft and Sony come up with a competitor

      1. I don’t know if there ever will be real competitor for Switch.
MS is going to stick with Xbone home consoles until the brand is dead or cloud only and Sony is not in a position to compete on 2 different fronts, if they want to stay ahead MS.
Maybe some smart device maker could make competing concept, but those would probably be on the expensive side.

  2. 10 mil sold, not just shipped! :O.
    Well done! And before 1year.
Great news, this confirms a strong first year, pretty certain big developers will bring more titles to the console. Just need Dark souls and GTA and my PS4 will just collect dust. Such a contrast between the switch and Wii U.

    I am one happy customer.

    1. Dark Souls, GTA5, KH3, MH:XX, Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta Trilogy, Batman Arkham ports, Wolfenstein 2, POKEMON GEN 8 OR MMO, the Switch is gonna rock every gamer’s and hater’s world. XD

    1. What I think is SO impressive about this is I keep seeing the Switch in stock. Its sales are as high as ever, and even in this very tech enthusiast area you can still find them. They really weren’t kidding about ramping up production.

      1. I think they did so on the price of OS and software improvement.
Still think Switch launched to beta, and Nintendo had no plans for it to sell this well yet.
Probably “real” launch was meant to be for holidays with marketing push, but they were caught off by the success of the device, so they just ran with it.
Games released this year were most likely about done from launch to June, and fanned out for the year.

      2. “No, they aren’t playing around anymore. I think they amp up their serious nature in gaming.”

Pure nonsense. With the exception of Zelda embracing the style of its NES ancestors, most everything they’ve done has been the kind of games they released on the Wii U.

  3. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

    ||My statistical results were surpassed by 14%, The First Order can annihilate Xbots sooner than expected then…||

      1. You have the feeling he is not the real guy too right? m2. i can smell my troll kind from far away. because im a original troll. For instance i troll and i know I AM trolling while i play on my switch. the rest people who are doing that for srsly and hate on switch are not trolls are just delusionals. and maybe they need help from doctor for the illusions ;p Switch is doomed theory is even worse than the “earth is flat’ theory lol. :PP

          1. Infinite Kalas X3, The Sonyendo King

That would be the real Sasori that said those things. This guy is just a copycat. (Plus last time I saw the real Sasori on here, he wasn’t an immature little clown like he use to be. But that’s why we got Church of Sasori now: to be the bigger clown than the original Sasori ever was.)

  4. Interested to know how many people in your family own a switch, is it being treated like a 3DS multiple units per house hold or as a stand alone home console.

  5. WOW…..the haters have got to be on suicide watch after finding this out. This is just incredible. 10 million sold and the Switch has not even been on the market a full year yet. Eat that crow haters with a bucket of salt

    1. Remember the likes of blackb0nd, who were pretty much certain the switch would fail (I remember him calling it “the Bitch”)? Yeah…they’re probably not too happy this thing has blown up in sales now XD

    2. And it’s not even Post-Christmas sales yet. XD It might jump another 3 million or so after the holidays and will likely beat Pii U’s pathetic sales by Mid-January..guaranteed. :)

  7. Infinite Kalas X3, The Sonyendo King

Impressive. Still, it has a ways to go before it surpasses the Gamecube. (And it needs more than just 4 games that I want. Luckily, Bayo1 & Bayo2 will be here in the next few months so that will bring my total games up to 6. If Sonic Forces was 20 bucks cheaper on Switch, I’d have 5 right now instead of 4.)

  8. There’s some stuff about the Switch that needs asking of. Why it didn’t release at the end of the year like every other gaming system did (Gaming Systems are supposed to have a lifespan of atleast 5 years anyway), why it uses Cartridges which I thought that like VHS Tapes are Obsolete, why it ditched what changed our lives on the Wii U like Miiverse, and why it’s porting Wii U Games to it.

    1. its not using cartridges, its using Game cards aka flash cards. They technically act just like SD cards. Cartridges are an old predecessor to memory cards and now game cards. They also had the ability to hav extra hardware in them to boost a system power and hav the ability to nearly wipeout load times to mere seconds. So calling Switch game cards as cartridges shuld mean as a nickname NOT the actual meaning.

  9. Good news! Now invest peoples money in a switch pro home edition console, powerfull enough to get full third party support like other platforms, with a normal controller no gimmicks and we got the best Nintendo console since the Snes and Nes. Also while we are at it a better interface , friend list witouth codes and better online platform , full app support Netflix ect. , perhaps even Blu ray for the real movie fans out there. Sounds like a win win to me.
