I’ve never understood the irrational obsession with Melee.
It’s not irrational. It’s just better suited for the type of play some people prefer, because it favors offense/attacking, over defense/avoiding and gives more technical players greater options for movement and attack. I love all the games, but I definitely prefer the more weighty feel of Melee.
i say smash 4 promotes offense, people are more willing to go off stage in smash 4 since there’s no risk of getting gimped by the only one person can grab the ledge mechanics, it just gives people more defensive options so you don’t lose a stock with just one combo. if you watch other fighting games like street fighter they play like smash 4 with people defending and playing neutral until one get a combo in and then it’s back to neutral

In my experience, a very healthy portion of melee fans can’t articulate how melee is better for their preferred gameplay than any other smash game. Your explanation likely holds true for the demo that’s both mature and competitive, but what a lot of people see is “Melee is the best, you’re wasting your time playing anything else!” “Why?” “Melee’s just better scrub”, making it indeed an irrational obsession.
Why? We’re talking about the all time badass of 4 player choas and skills. Smash Bros 64 was a blast but a little clunky.
Melee is what the games should be now.
Congratulations to the people who put in the effort to make this and enjoy this and all, but for me personally Melee elitists are just as bad as the people who say smash isn’t a fighting game.

Smash is clearly a fighting game, but I would think it has more than enough differences that it isn’t really the same genre as SF, Tekken, or Guilty Gear. That’s not a negative judgement. Smash is just so different from the others it doesn’t feel right to put them in the same category.
Watching this makes me immediately think.

I like melee and all, grew up with it but it’s sad that it split the fan base up and became the way it is. Moving on is never a thing to them
This is why I can’t take Melee fans seriously.

I’ve been over Melee for years now, and enjoy the diversity of Sm4sh much more. But good for anyone who prefers Melee, ya know?
Elitists are the real problem, on all sides. Just enjoy what you like without trying to “prove” it’s better.
