Rumour: Possible Information Regarding Pokemon Gen VIII Appears Online

We know that the Pokemon Company and Game Freak are busy working on the Nintendo Switch version of Pokemon, but that’s all we really know at this point in time. Information has popped up on PokeJungle that suggests that the game will feature a simplified Battle System. It has been compared to that of the Digimon World games and also Pokken Tournament with its rock-scissors-paper attacks, blocks or grabs. Here’s the rest of the details discovered by the site:

  • The Chinese localization team has already finished translating the games’ script
  • There will be no new Mega Evolutions introduced in the new games
  • Z-Moves return and now use motion control to activate using the Joy-Cons
  • Central plot revolves around the conflict between tradition and innovation
  • Region inspiration has been rumored to be Spain or Italy
  • Release to come late 2018 (~December) or early 2019

        1. Still, it’s been confirmed that Pokemon will be able to be transferred back and forth between the Switch games and SM/USUM via Pokemon Bank. It’s usually hard to do that between new generations.

The entire purpose of Pokemon bank was so that it wouldn’t be hard to do this anymore.

  2. This rumor is so dumb that’s all I’m saying I’m not going to believe it unless Nintendo leaks online by accident or reveals it themselves this is going to be just like nx ones

      1. The term “generation” is largely arbitrary. Any completely new Switch incarnation of the franchise will be so different it couldn’t avoid the label of a new generation if it wanted to. Further….

        March 6th 2011 Pokemon Black

        October 12th 2013 Pokemon X

        1. I was basing my comment off of when the Pokémon games came out in Japan, the release date you put for Black is the US release
          date.

          Don’t know why I said 4-5 years, it’s more 3-4 years.

      2. “I was basing my comment off of when the Pokémon games came out in Japan,”

That only gives you a few extra months.

        September 2010 – Oct 2013 is 3 years and 2 months.

If we put Pokemon Switch at “early 2019”, we could put the new generation gap brackets at

November 2016 – March 2019 two years and four months.

It is earlier than normal, but context should be kept in mind. The pokemon generations have always been linked to handheld console generations. The 3DS, the machine of the current gen of pokemon games, came out all the way back in early 2011. Nintendo is facing success on the Switch to a level that surprises even them, and I’m sure they want nothing more than to pour some gas on that fire with as much software support as they can possibly manage. What we don’t know as part of this equation is Nintendo’s other release schedule. It’s entirely possible that they *need* something in that release time window. While I’m skeptical about the rumors, the time frame doesn’t bother me.

      3. 2019 is too early indeed. We are talking about creating a whole new englne for these games and most likely new 3D models for all 800 ish pkmn and their variants. Sun and Moon development did not take too long since the models were the same as the ones from XY and ORAS, the main change was the overworld. However, with gen 8, it is like starting from ground zero.

      4. But Nintendo need’s a big game for the Christmas season! Pokemon is almost as popular if not as or more as Zelda and Mario. It will be a HUGE seller, aspeshaly if it’s open world

  3. Compared to Digimon World? lol wut? I find this hard to believe.

I like the idea of using motion controls to trigger Z Moves however but implementing them properly is another story.

  4. Considering they did say they were doing something “disruptive” and now this pops up, it does make me believe that the core-gameplay is being reworked.
Not gonna lie, this has me worried, it sounds to me like they are taking Pokemon from a Turn-Based RPG to an Action RPG. Granted I could be wrong on that as I’ve never played Digimon but if that’s what they are gonna do, I hope they know what they’re doing.

    1. It wouldn’t surprise me. Megas are hard to maintain from a design standpoint. Brutal to balance, you have to implement the mega stones now in every game until the end of time, you’re expected to do extra design work for a new stage of every popular pokemon that most players will never see or use, and for all that effort you don’t get to use megas as a main selling point since it isn’t a new system anymore. I fully expect Z-moves were designed to replace mega evos since they fill the same power bracket, but aren’t totally unique for each pokemon.

      1. I really am huge fan for the idea of unlocking pkmn potential trough mega evolution and z-moves, espicially the signature z moves. However, only a handful of mega evolutions look decent and many who got them were already strong and do not need itie Garchomp scizor and salamence.

i like the addition of new pokemon but at this point it is not easy for the designers to come up with original designs, hence they are relying on either mega evo and regional variants. I wonder what’s next.

      2. “I fully expect Z-moves were designed to replace mega evos since they fill the same power bracket, but aren’t totally unique for each pokemon.”
Except that the megaevolved can still be used in battle but the Z-move is only one move (or two if rotom decides to give you an extra chance to use it) so its not the same as mega evolution. There are ways to include new mega evolutions. They just need to hire more people with talent and problem solved. I truly want to see more mega evolutions for other pokemon.

Don’t get too hyped yet. Last rumor we listened to said USUM was going to be for the switch

  6. Infinite Kalas X3, The Sonyendo King

“There will be no new Mega Evolutions introduced in the new games”
***Maybe they should ditch the need for those mega stones & just focus on the designs for new mega-evolutions instead. This way, they don’t have to re-add the mega stones in every game after this one. Of course, if a Pokemon mega evolves, they can’t use a Z-move during that mega evolution so as to maintain the game’s balance. Or they could make the mega evolutions into permanent evolutions for the Pokemon that have them & simply gimp the mega evolutions so they won’t be as powerful & thus make other Pokemon obsolete. After all, it’d be a shame to kill off mega evolutions & thus make those designs for them go to waste.

“Z-Moves return and now use motion control to activate using the Joy-Cons”
***I don’t like this idea. Maybe if the Joy-Cons weren’t such a pain to use without the grip, I’d be fine with this. So hopefully the motion control idea is an optional way to use Z-moves.

“Central plot revolves around the conflict between tradition and innovation”
***That’s an interesting conceptual conflict for GameFreak seeing as how they’ve been more tied down by tradition than the rest of Nintendo. After all, the mainline Pokemon games stuck to 2D even when the Nintendo DS’s games were capable of 3D models. It wasn’t til the 3DS that they finally started using 3D models for their mainline games. I look forward to it.

    1. That’s a good idea (to use mega evolution without the mega stones). I think they need to continue creating new mega evolutions with the help of new members that have a passion (and talent) for making this. I want to see more pokemon with two different megas. The can ad new letters like Mega Typhlosion Gamma (I couldn’t find the symbol of gamma) or Mega Dragonite Epsilon (I couldn’t find the symbol either).
